The area
Address
Neighborhood: Southwark
Even before the arrival of the instantly iconic Shard, the riverside scene in Southwark had moved well beyond any up-and-coming phase of development. For quite some time, locals and out-of-towners alike have loved browsing the boutiques of Bermondsey High Street, foraging through the bounteous stalls at centuries old foodie haven Borough Market, and flocking to the banks of the Thames to enjoy some of Britain's biggest attractions such as Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. Despite Southwark's many popular draws, instant calm can be achieved easily by turning down almost any side street. For more urban buzz, a quick stroll across famed bridges like the pedestrianized Millennium Bridge or the ever photogenic Tower Bridge yields access to the very core of Central London. And with London Bridge Station as this neighborhood's main transportation hub, getting across town (or to anywhere in England for that matter) is a relative breeze.
How to get there
  • London Bridge • 8 min walk
  • Southwark • 10 min walk

The 1950's musical "The Boyfriend" was our sole reason for going. Not heard of this theatre before....quirky, comfortable, intimate...will go again and maybe sample the restaurant too! Performance was of a very high standard...from acting to dancing, scenery, lighting all that one would expect from a London production but without the prices!

We visited here earlier in the week to see the theatre's current production of The Boyfriend. It is an absolutely lovely space. I think the auditorium seats around 180 in the audience and the seats themselves are long padded benches - extremely comfortable, supportive and with plenty of leg room. The 'stage' is on floor level and quite small but allows for a really intimate theatre experience. You really feel as if you're in the mix.

The staff were very friendly, and free tap water was easily available throughout the evening. The bar looked very quaint and welcoming and was surrounded with posters from previous shows. The restaurant looked very pleasant and affordable too.

The Boyfriend was simply brilliant. As a fan of the show I was worried that it wouldn't be up to my (albeit high) expectations as I hadn't heard of the venue before and the tickets were very cheap for central London. However, it was one of the best productions I have seen. The cast were brilliant and offered the perfect mix of humour, 1920s dancing and beautiful singing. The use of the small stage space was very innovative too.

I would really recommend a visit here, as the venue seems to attract a real variety of shows; there is something for everyone.

We went to see "The Boyfriend" today. I went into the theatre thinking that hmmmn I was not going to enjoy it. But. I have to say that the production was truly enchanting, the acting, singing and dancing was absolutely first class and west end standard.

Our first visit to this theatre, but it will not be our last. Really enjoyable performance of The Boyfriend. An intimate theatre, tiny stage, but huge performance from all cast members.

This converted factory is a five minute walk from London Bridge station. It has a good restaurant, in which you can sometimes eat at a special rate purchasing a theatre/meal combo. Certainly, after a show I noticed that my ticket said you could receive a 10% discount, although the restaurant was empty then and you might not want to eat so late.

We paid £49.50 each for tickets to the latest production: The Boy Friend. This is not dear by West End standards and the intimate space means you can see and hear perfectly from all the seats in the auditorium. However, I have to say that they are not that comfortable, being little more than padded benches. What is worse, you do feel a little like a sardine in a full can!

However, the show was absolutely fantastic, with great performances (particularly from the two "juvenile leads", that doyene of the West End and National Theatre stages Janie Dee, and Adrian Edmondson, who does a perfectly cast parody of a 1930s English Lord abroad. I had forgotten how many wonderful songs are included in this show: not least the title number. The dancing is extremely clever for such a small stage and performed with gusto.

The show is a MUST!

Saw The Boyfriend, great production in a super space. Not the most comfortable seats but worked OK for this length of production.

Great little theatre in South Bank - enjoy The Boyfriend a lot (Feb 2020). Level of the production was high and the theatre seems to be attracting regular local crowd. Interesting experience.

We went to see the Boy Friend at this very quirky theatre. Having negotiated our way through the restaurant to get to the auditorium, sat in our comfy seats and enjoyed a fabulous show. Sadly two members of the audience were taken ill, one during the first act the other during the second. Both were dealt with courteously and with great sympathy, especially the second lady as the show had to be halted for 15 minutes or so. The staff were a marvellous, the actors great and a very enjoyable afternoon, notwithstanding the two emergencies

THE BOYFRIEND (book ,music and lyrics by Sandy Wilson) is Alive and Kicking in a Sparkling new production at The Intimate and Wonderful Menier Chocolate Factory. Amara Okereke is sweet and ideal as Polly Browne. Janie Dee brings sophistication and style to Madame Dubonnet. Gabrielle Lewis-Dodson is charming as Masie (I lost my heart to her!) and Robert Portal is a perfect Percival Browne. The Highlights were: "Won't You Charleston with Me" First Rate Dancing by Lewis-Dodson and Jack Butterwort (Bobby). "A Room in Bloomsbury" nicely Sung and Danced by Okereke and Dylan Mason (Tony) and "Poor Little Pierrette" A little gem for Dee and Okereke. The Entire cast did a fine job . Choreograher Bill Deamer did an Excellent job with all the Dances.
