Address
Neighborhood: Southwark
Even before the arrival of the instantly iconic Shard, the riverside scene in Southwark had moved well beyond any up-and-coming phase of development. For quite some time, locals and out-of-towners alike have loved browsing the boutiques of Bermondsey High Street, foraging through the bounteous stalls at centuries old foodie haven Borough Market, and flocking to the banks of the Thames to enjoy some of Britain's biggest attractions such as Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. Despite Southwark's many popular draws, instant calm can be achieved easily by turning down almost any side street. For more urban buzz, a quick stroll across famed bridges like the pedestrianized Millennium Bridge or the ever photogenic Tower Bridge yields access to the very core of Central London. And with London Bridge Station as this neighborhood's main transportation hub, getting across town (or to anywhere in England for that matter) is a relative breeze.

The Shard has been at the top of my list of places to go for some time now and used my birthday trip to London as the perfect excuse to go! We booked through Virgin Experience Days which came with a meal at a Gordon Ramsay restaurant and I believe it came to around £90 for two people so considered this to be really good value as currently the standard ticket price for The Shard is £25pp.

We arrived at 14.00 on a Sunday and was asked to sign in on the Track and Trace app and queue for a short while so everyone could enter whilst abiding to social distancing rules. Unfortunately for us despite it being May, the weather has been quite poor and it was quite a grey and rainy day but did not let that ruin our experience.

As it was for my birthday we decided to purchase a cocktail each on the 69th floor and take in some views and get some selfies of course! As expected the cocktails were on the pricier side but didn't mind paying as it was for a special occasion and they were really tasty! As with most places at the moment, the bar is table service only and you purchase drinks through the QR code on the tables which made for an easy experience, and to be honest, who really likes to queue? We then travelled up to the 72nd (I think) floor, which is open air and got a few last views in before the rain started to come down again.

Despite having to book a time slot, I did not feel rushed and we could have walked leisurely around taking in the views as much as we would have liked. It's just a shame about the weather!

It was really easy to find the entrance to The Shard as it is right at the entrance/exit of the London Bridge tube station!

I would really recommend coming here as it has the tallest vantage point in Western Europe and the standard tickets are at a reduced price at the moment. I would also suggest checking our experience days online as you may be able to bag yourself an even better deal just like we did!

We did the View from the River cruise with Simon as our guide. His commentary was both informative and entertaining. The views of the sights along the Thames were excellent and it was all we could hope for from a cruise on the river. A reasonably priced 50 minute cruise with facilities and a cafe on board, I cannot recommend this tour enough.

We were queueing outside having got vouchers we need to exchange for tickets (we weren't told this). We got in the queue to get up The Shard not knowing (along with other people) that we had to exchange our paper booking for a ticket. Having joined this queue we were just fortunate enough to be the last people to join the queue, after us people were given later times to come back as the queue was now going back out the revolving door. I have no idea if this is how the queues are usually handled but poor organisation and communication.

Once we got through security things progressed a lot more smoothly and before we knew it we were looking out over the city. First observation was the wind unsurprisingly makes it a bit chilly up there so dress accordingly. The views were excellent andI recommend doing this towards the end of your stay so you can photograph and see places you've visited from a different point of view.

A good view of the city but after you have walked around up there for 30 mins or so taking pictures you are pretty much done, worth doing yes, but pricey for what it is.

An hour and a quarter wait - in a dreary underpass,

The view is great but if you go, choose an absolutely crystal clear day.

Also if you want to spend the money to make it an enjoyable event pay for the fast track.

The queuing is absolutely hopeless and tiring and drains any enjoyment out of your visit. After an hour and a quarter of periodically having a chirpy chap saying hands up if you have a quarter past two booking and then eventually the lifts are almost in sight they have the audacity to tell you to smile so that they can take a photo of you with the hope that they can fleece some money out of you once you finally get out.

The bar is swanky looking enough but the experience is brought down to earth by the slightly tacky cramped seating conditions (and cost).

Best bit - going to the loos. Recommendation save your money and go to the Tate viewing point and buy a bottle of Moet each (!) for the same cost!

Not a good booking system AT ALL.
I bought gift tickets from the website to visit the shard for a friends birthday. On the ticket it literally says that you don’t need to book, you just show up and give them the tickets.
So myself and two other friends had planned a whole weekend around visiting the shard. One of them had come from Bournemouth and the other from Bristol, and we had planned the whole weekend for this purpose.
We showed up on Saturday 4th December, to be told quite bluntly that we need to book and that it was fully booked for that day. We spoke to one of the ladies outside, and explained how our ticket said we don’t need to book, but we were met with the response of ‘just come again another time’. Which was obviously very difficult because of how far away my other friends lived.
However, we could book for Sunday 5th (next day), but we could only book it in person, she was saying how we couldn’t book via the phone or website. It was all very confusing.
Luckily because I lived close by we were able to attend on the Sunday, but had we not been lucky, we would have lost out on over £40 per ticket. It seems ridiculous that it says on the ticket that there is no need to book but then it is fully booked when you arrive?! Surely it should either say on the ticket that we need to book, or they should leave a certain amount of tickets available for people who have these gift tickets.
It ruined our whole weekend as we had to change every plan to fit around these timings. It seems like a very silly system.

Whilst we were waiting in the queue, we spoke to a few others with the same issue, so we were not the only ones.

When we finally got up there, it was lovely. I will definitely recommend. The bar/waiter staff were lovely, and the view was good despite it being a little cloudy. I would recommend coming here, but checking the ticket/booking system before arriving as it completely messed us around.

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to review The View from The Shard. We apologise for the confusion, the ticket you purchased is an open dated voucher, as you have not booked in a time slot with this particular voucher it is subject to availability. This is all stated in the terms and conditions of the voucher. We were sold out on Saturday 4th December, this was communicated on our website and all of our social channels. Therefore, only those with pre booked time slots for that day would be able to visit. However, we are glad you managed to get in on the Sunday and enjoyed your experience! We do hope to welcome you back in the future when it is less cloudy! Kind Regards, The Guest Experience Team

We visited the Shard as part of birthday celebrations. We booked tickets to see the view (£50) and also a cocktail table for two for an extra £49. The view was fantastic especially at dusk as the lights came on. Our cocktail tickets specified that we would have a table for two for an hour and that we would have a cocktail or champagne each and a sharing plate - either meat, veggie or dessert. In the event, no table was ready when we arrived, a waitress said she would come back right away but did not return. Eventually another waiter took us to a table with bar stools. We opted for champagne (which was good) but were given bar snacks (crisps, olives, nuts) and no choice of a sharing plate. When we queried this we were told the menu had changed. We complained and were told they would bring the manager but they did not. It was really crowded with people constantly looking for their booked tables which did not make for a relaxing time so we left after 30 minutes. They had clearly overbooked. So great view (5 stars), impressive lift but I couldn't possibly recommend the cocktail bar service (2 stars)

I booked a visit to the shard for my wife’s 50th birthday. I had booked our slot for 13:15 thinking we’d have loads of time to then catch our train. Unfortunately on arrival at 13:00 we discovered that the queue was absolutely massive and the people in charge were calling out time slots. We waited and waited and then eventually, at 13:45, the 13:15 time slot was called forwards….to the back of another queue which we were informed would be another half an hour before we would get to the lift - so an hour after the time slot I booked! This of course meant that we would never have time to get in and also catch our train! We took the decision to leave and not risk missing the train. Basically the shard had massively over booked the ticket slots and with only limited people allowed in the lift could therefore not possibly cope with the amount of people. I went through the refund process (because £50 for two tickets is pretty steep) and have just been emailed back to say I won’t be getting a refund! So ultra poor management and huge over booking of time slots doesn’t appear to be an issue for the shard! They will just take your money and not care that because of their terrible management you don’t get to go up for a 50th birthday treat! Great! Utterly useless management, don’t even get my money back! Won’t be bothering ever again, thanks shard!!!

Booked tickets in April for our trip to London in July, we planned to go up the shard on Saturday 24th July at 8:30pm. About two weeks prior to our arrival, I received an email saying that they were not allowing people in after 8pm on the date I had booked, so I either needed to change my booking or get a full refund. I rang up and spoke to someone who said I would be able to come on the same day; but just arrive earlier. So I changed my booking to 7:45 on the Saturday night - I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t allowed to stick with my original booking that was only 45 minutes later.

When we arrived at 7:45, we were told on the door that they were shutting at 9pm and last orders at the bar would be at 8:30pm - on a Saturday night in July! Luckily we didn’t have to queue and were straight in and up to the top floor, however it was very busy and we struggled to find a space at the window to enjoy the view and take photos. We then decided to join the large queue to the bar to get a (overpriced) drink. However by the time we had finished this drink, it was already just gone 8:25, and the bar was closing at 8:30. We enjoyed the view a little more, visited the toilets (make sure you go to the toilet if you visit the shard; it’s amazing) and then decided to leave as it was around 8:45 and they were closing at 9.

We were really looking forward to this experience however we are very disappointed. On booking our tickets, it says once you’re up there, you are free to stay for as long as you like - but how can we when the place closes just an hour after our arrival? And why was I not told, when I rang up to change the booking, that they were closing early that day? Had I been told, I would have changed the booking for another day, where we could’ve enjoyed a few hours and really took our time. I just couldn’t understand why they would close at 9pm, on a Saturday night in July. If it was a random Tuesday in November then fair enough, but not in the middle of summer and a weekend too.

Overall we are extremely disappointed that our Shard experience did not meet our expectations. We felt rushed, it was too busy and we have spent £50 on tickets for something we only got to experience for 50 minutes. Yes, the views are outstanding, but if you are planning on visiting I strongly advise you to ring up and clarify they’re not closing early, avoid going on a weekend so it’s not really busy, or better still, choose somewhere else instead.

Booked experience through Buy a Gift for a view from the shard which you turn up and trade the certificate for tickets. Traveled to London today for our 25th wedding anniversary and arrived at the Shard for 10am as 9am is the advertised opening time on their website. On arrival it was closed with a Shard building staff member saying they are opening at 2pm, that they have not updated their website and may not accept my certificate as there probably fully booked with tickets from there own site.

We have theatre tickets for the afternoon so we can't use our tickets. I am absolutely furious as this was a suprise for my wife. A big London attraction should not operate like this. You can't actually speak to anyone and they are not interested in dealing with anyone who has bought tickets from Buy a Gift etc (they day this on their recorded enquiries message).

As we have traveled from another part of the country we will not be in a position to use these tickets again so have also lost out financially.

We had to cancel our trip to London in October due to catching covid. I emailed the View From The Shard to cancel and received an automated response stating that they had a massive backlog so wouldn’t respond anytime soon.

I phoned as was told I would need to claim via the ticket cover. So I kicked that off in motion. I soon received a response to my initial email stating no need to claim on the ticket cover and that they had logged that I could rebook and just needed to respond to the email with a date and time once we had rebooked our trip. I cancelled the ticket plan claim.

We have rebooked our trip, so I replied to that email requesting a date and time. They got back to me stating I cannot rebook and should have claimed through the ticket plan, totally ignoring the email they sent.

This company has been by quite some distance the worst company to deal with in terms of rearranging plans for our trip. Absolutely pathetic customer service!
