Great crowd, shame about the venue

The London Stadium was the final stop of a football filled weekend in England’s capital for me, and it’s the one I’m left with the most mixed feelings on. Built recently, for the 2012 Olympics, the 60,000 all seater arena became West Ham’s home in 2016, replacing their iconic Upton Park stadium.

The stadium is relatively easy to reach, about 20-30 minutes walk from the nearest underground, but it suffers the plight of many modern stadiums - its in the middle of nowhere. No bars or eateries around it to enhance your pre-match experience. You will find a fairly comprehensive club store, but if you want something to eat or drink you’ll need to go induce.

This was there the initial cracks appear. Despite being a modern stadium, the catering options are sparse in terms of content and quantity. Quality is fine, but a katsu chicken burger doesn’t scream an afternoon at the football to me. The beer though, this deserves its own paragraph.

Now, despite much being made about “getting a pint at the football down in England” in Scotland, the truth is that from experience more often than not it’s not great. A watered down pint of Carling that you can only drink on the concourse from a plastic cup really isn’t living the dream. Here they take it to a different level of bad - cans. Now before ‘snob’ accusations are levelled at me I hasten to point out that at such mass attended events canned beer isn’t necessarily a disaster, it just often is. These are often not even remotely cold, which was the case here, which the staff confounded by not even attempting to pour right, meaning there was an array of cups filled with 1/4 beer, 3/4 foamy head, that they then proceeded to pour into one another to try make a pint. For £6+. Now I’m no expert, but surely having one or 2 people (with even a slight semblance of how to pour a beer) in the back just pouring out a collection of these that staff can take as required would be preferable here?

Go up to the stand and while there’s no criticism of the maintenance (for £65 a ticket there shouldn’t be) it’s not great. You’re miles from the pitch for a start. Now I’ve experienced this in stadiums across the world more than once, usually necessitated by a running track, what made this so questionable is the massive empty space behind one call. I’m not certain what this is intended for, it looks like maybe building a stage, but it’s a massive dead space that sucks a lot of life and potential out of it.

Now, with it being something of a local derby (against Spurs) and West Ham currently riding a crest of good form, perhaps the crowd I saw was maybe skewed, but what I saw is all I can really report and one thing I will say is that the Irons fans were fantastic. They deserve a lot of credit for whipping up anything resembling an atmosphere in there, let alone the excellent one they did.

If you’re a West Ham fan, chances are you don’t care where you play, you’ll want to see your team regardless. If you’re just football touristing…it’s not the best bang for your Buck in London, but I wouldn’t go as far as dissuading anyone from going. Just don’t go near the beer.

Standing room only
Oct 2021
Went to watch West Ham, the stadium was great, good seats but could not sit in them, the whole corner stood up for 90mins, only time we could sit down was at half time.

I think they did it to cover up all the extra fans with no seats, they were 6 blokes in front of us covering 4 seats, stewards did nothing about it.

Staff did not control anything, poorly organized and lack of knowledge, shame as it spoilt the whole experiance. They seemed more concerned about people vaping when watching the match?

This stadium tour was great. The tour guide Mick was very knowledgeable and amusing. We got to see a lot of the stadium and there were many opportunities to take pics. I can highly recommend this tour.

An excellent tour - thanks to the guides!

Took the tour. Chris and Joe (tour guides) were a m a z i n g. Every little detail, every story about the stadium or West Ham, they knew everything. It was the best stadium tour that I got while in London. I won't ever forget it.
Plus, the stadium itself is very beautiful and you get to visit an Olympic caliber stadium after all!

Great tour for West ham and atheltics fans

Brillant tour of the stadium for a West ham supporting family, loved seeing behind the scenes of the best team in the Premier league and Olympics 2012. The only downside is that the trophies need to be on display like other big clubs and not in closest somewhere. Overall very enjoyable.

I came to see the stadium where the 2012 Olympics took place, it was a great tour and the tour guide (joe) was great. I'm not a fan of West Ham I just came to have alook at the stadium but it was still amazing.

Great for West Ham fans!
Aug 2021
We went on the tour as a family activity and found it very interesting. Our tour guide, Mick, was very knowledgeable and friendly. Whilst concentrated on West Ham facts and history, there was also some Olympic trivia too. (Although I can't imagine many non West Ham fans would want to look round the new home of the Academy!) Glad we took the time to do this tour and felt we had value for money.

London Stadium Tour - Not as advertised.
Jul 2021
We got the tickets thought virgin experience and looked on the tours website and there wasn’t any mention of this being a completely football orientated tour.

The tour only spoke about West Ham and nothing about the building. They only briefly mentioned the Olympics, the reason the building and the area is there!

The multi media hand set we were given were extremely heavy to wear round your neck. They only showed a couple of videos that didn’t really inform you of anything.

We thought the tour guide was okay however he was very patriotic to the point of being inappropriate and offensive while talking about the history of using players from other countries. He also didn’t really say much that most football fans wouldn’t already know, just pointed out pictures on the wall.

We didn’t Receive our free personalised certificate at the end.

For a poorly thought out tour that lasted an hour it was very disappointing and not worth the price.

Wouldn’t recommend.

Needs something to make it top notch
Jun 2019
Having been to the stadium for a concert and last years MLB games, I felt there was a lack of something to raise this stadium to equal status with other similarly slated arenas.

If the beer prices are to remain high, well less beer will be consumed. Starter for 10.

Food, same thing. Better quality and better prices would mean we actually want to eat the food.

The atmosphere was ok, and although the transport links are there, just like any other big stadium, you have to be prepared to get home a fair few hours after the event concludes.

Horrible ground
Jan 2020 • Solo
Is this the worst football ground in the world? West Ham is a joke of a club at the best of times, but I genuinely feel sorry for their fans being stuck in this soulless excuse for a stadium. Absolutely no atmosphere, over priced tickets and full of day trippers. Stay away!
