The area
Address
Neighborhood: St. James's
Perennially fashionable since the days of Henry VIII, the aristocratic “Clubland” of St James's is a premier destination for high end craft and bespoke design. Here you’ll lose count of the Royal Warrants (which indicate that the Royal Family patronizes the establishment) seen in shop front windows, even during a short stroll to bordering Green Park or St James’s Park. With the brightly lit and constantly buzzing junction of Piccadilly Circus at its northeast corner and none of Central London too far away, this is an surprisingly central and accessible part of town, especially given its prosperous demeanor.
How to get there
  • Green Park • 5 min walk
  • Piccadilly Circus • 7 min walk

Unacceptable Delays

I stopped in for lunch and had one of the longest waits ever for food. To be fair I was told it would take 40 minutes but there are only probably 15 tables to eat and the pub wasn't full.

I had the gammon and it was the smallest piece I'd seen in 50 years and it was very salty. Other people ordered the steak and ale pie by the look of it and that looked very good.

The beer was good and the ambiance of the pub was fine.

I'd suggest turning up really early if you want to eat or just have a drink if later.

Lunch
Aug 2019 • Friends
The pub is a traditional London Pub and has been around forever. Nice to look at, lots of history and decent beers however on our visit we had lunch and it was very average. Pop in for a pint but their are better options for food nearby.

beer better than the pub
Apr 2018 • Friends
A traditional pub like this could do without the TV screen and intrusive muzak to the extent that not surprisingly most customers seemed to prefer the rather dismal alleyway outside.
Beer is pretty good though.
Food OK
Service OK and efficient enough but not exactly welcoming/smiling mine hosts.
Probably a 3.5 but Trip Advisor is not that subtle.

Across the road from the auction house. Very traditional pub in the Greene King chain so decent food menu reasonably priced for St James area with main courses around twelve quid. Good selection of beer on tap.

On paper this should have been great for a team (7 people) lunch: good ales, attractive menu etc. The reality was poor. Food arrived intermittently, service was awful and unapologetic. Food moderate and weaker than expectations. Apparently kitchen was short on staff. Won't be going back.

We we're in London for the day for my Daughter to pick up her DofE aaward from St James palace and needed somewhere close and that served food quickly, The Golden Lion was perfect for us and the Pulled pork wraps we're delicious, as was the Golden lion house ale. the people on the table next to us we're tucking in to a nice size portion of fish and chips.

On our last night in London, we were trying to decide where to have our dinner. We were totally uninspired. I googled nearby pubs with food and this one came up. I coaxed the missus out of the hotel and down the road to a narrow and unassuming little pub. We were greeted by a very cheerful barman who offered us a drink or suggested a meal upstairs. We went upstairs to a cozy and friendly bar/dining area and were seated. The service was absolutely top notch and it was backed up by the quality food that followed. I had a burger and the missus had slow cooked lamb shank. Both were quality meals. The cherry on top was the desert, a chocolate brownie with mint ice cream. This topped off our night (and tipped our scales!). All three of the staff there that night were chatty, friendly and accommodating. We were sad that we only discovered this jewel of a pub on our last night. We will be back!
