This house and gardens has the Wow factor
Beautiful house and gardens. This is the very first place I bring all my visitors from abroad as it has such wow factor. So my great nice aged 20 visited the week before last from Los Angeles. She loved it. The volunteers are all very helpful and interesting to talk to. This is a real gem. Easy parking and a great shop.
Thank you Candice for your FIVE STAR review of Eltham Palace. We love welcoming holidaymakers from abroad with great transport links to and from central London by rail to Eltham or Mottingham and a number of local bus services including the 161.

    Beautiful and interesting visit
We really enjoyed our day at Eltham Palace. Such an interesting place with an audio tour, beautiful gardens and interiors. The staff were friendly and helpful. We also had a tasty lunch in the restaurant. I would highly recommend it 😍
Thank you so much for taking the time to post your FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace. The cafe source some lovely local fresh produce so it's great to hear it's going down so well.

I first saw Eltham Palace on one of George Clarke’s programmes, it fascinated me and I knew I wanted to visit it, it is a lovely place so peaceful and the gardens are lovely and from the gardens in the distance you can see the Shard and the “Walkie Talkie” building the train from Charing Cross to Eltham was very quick and just a 15 minute walk from the station. The weather on the day was beautiful couldn’t have been better! The staff were lovely even when my relative picked up a plate from the table and set the alarm off!! The talk we listened to was also very informative…
Thank you Ann for your great review. As you mentioned, we have a great view of the city from here which is about 8 miles as the crow flies and if you look carefully. you can see the dome of St Pauls.

    Art deco delight
Firstly the bad. No proper directions on leaving the train station( leave station go to main road and turn left, follow road till you see car park signposted.) Gripe over, the rest was excellent, friendly staff, delightful staff, lovely gardens, great kids area and wonderful house. Well worth the visit. English heritage members get in free, a bonus
Thank you for your review of your visit to Eltham Palace and sorry you lost your way. We are signposted from Eltham Station so take a left on the main road, cross over to the right at the traffic lights and walk down Court Yard to the moat bridge entrance. From Mottingham Station, turn left on the main road and keep walking (ignoring the 'Eltham Palace' signpost indicating a left turn) until you reach the car park on the left and walk to the Visitor Centre at the end of the road.

    Fascinating place
Really enjoyed the Palace and Gardens. Audio/visual guide was excellent and enhanced our visit - we listened to every recording. Although a lot of the furniture and decorations were not original, they were faithful reproductions as seen in old photographs/County Life Magazine etc and as used by the Courtaulds.
Thank you so much for your FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace and Gardens. When English Heritage took over in 1995, it was discovered that the house had been photographed by Country Life for a feature called 'Country Homes and Gardens, Old and New' and issued on 29th May 1937. It was these pictures that were used, including how the furniture would be laid out.

    Joust weekend
Attended the joust event. A very enjoyable day. Lots of living history displays, falconry and a joust. Well organised. Staff were friendly. Most of our time was spent at the special event. We did walk round th3 gardens which were enjoyable.
Thank you David for your FIVE STAR feedback on the Legendary Joust at Eltham Palace. Lots of hard work went in by all the team to make it happen so it's great to hear that you think we got it right.

Oasis of beauty, both natural and architectural
We were amazed by the vision of Stephen and Ginie Courtauld to design these beautiful gardens, renovate the great hall, and build such a modern 1930s home which is extremely well preserved by English Heritage. It was also very interesting to read about the history of the place. For anyone visiting Woolwich, this is an easy 20 minute bus ride away and not to be missed - the closest in terms of beauty and serenity to the gardens at Eltham would be Kew gardens themselves. Another positive was that the place was not too crowded, although we did go on a Thursday afternoon.
Thank you for your FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace and Gardens, it is much appreciated. As you mention, we are very well served by public transport with two over ground stations (Eltham and Mottingham) just a short walk away.

    A mixed bag
I wish there were options to review staff and the venue. Firstly the venue. I've visited on numerous occasions and this time brought along a friend who had not visited before. Beautiful grounds. Very very quiet on our visit and we sat in the peaceful gardens admiring the views. The house is fascinating and the blend of Art Deco and Medieval works a treat. Now to the staff... Hats off to those in the house who were all very friendly and informative. Sadly not such a great experience elsewhere specifically towards the end of our visit at 3pm. The cafe... Two ladies behind the counter were more interested talking about their shifts, staffing levels and pay than engaging with us. We were served promptly but being privy to their working patterns and gripes about lack of breaks and their pay is not very professional . The shop.... I went to the till to purchase a few items. There were 3 staff members behind the till. One was clearly serving a small group of 4 and was busy wrapping/boxing up items they were buying. The other two were engaging in chitchat with each other, made no eye contact with us or acknowledged us in any other way. I put the items back and left. Quite a contrast between the staff (volunteers) in the house and staff (presumably salaried) in the cafe and shop. 4*for the house but sadly 2*for cafe/shop at the end of the day.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Eltham Palace, your feedback is much appreciated and very useful. We will share your observations with all the staff involved.

English Heritage Guides Make This Property More than Special
This palace is pure fun. The English Heritage volunteers in each area of the house are welcoming and have lots of fun facts and stories to share. The Medieval Hall (which has a great ceiling) has been used as a barn, had bombs dropped on it during WWII and been used for 1930's dance parties. The Art Deco rooms created by the Courtaulds have hidden rooms and secrets in addition to being quite beautiful. It is a great day out and only a short train from Waterloo East.
Thank you for taking the time to post this FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace, it's much appreciated and great to hear. We have a superb team of volunteers who are only too pleased to share their knowledge with our visitors.

    Excellent
This has been on our bucket list for a long time as we love Art Deco and what an excellent day it was. We obviously loved the palace and the gardens but found the audio guides with their extra stories, along with the stories from the volunteer guides made it extra special. It is a fascinating place with lots of history and one I wouldn't hesitate on visiting again.
Thank you so much for your FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace and Gardens, a true Art Deco gem. We will pass on your kind words to our team, especially the volunteers.

Eltham Palace and Gardens is a hidden gem about a 30 minute train ride from central London. We used the two for one rail deal and got a free admission by showing a voucher and our rail tickets. The palace is a beautiful Art Deco home with a spectacular medieval Great Hall. Admission includes a very detailed audio guide which includes the gardens. There is a lot to see and on a sunny day the gardens with some old castle ruins are great for a walk. We stayed about two hours and could have stayed longer in the garden. In winter they are only open on Sundays. Well worth the price and the trip out from London.

Thank you so much for a great review of your visit to Eltham Palace. During January we carry out lots of conservation housekeeping which this year included a deep clean of the Great Hall floor. From February half term the house and gardens are open six day a week and from April they will be open most Saturdays so please check the English Heritage website.

It was our first visit and we will be back.
Firstly so good customer service, all the people we met during our way, were super friendly and polite.
This place welcome children with great playground by entrance. And a cafe to care for big ones and little ones cravings. It was great to be able to get a coffee and enjoy it outside whilst watching kids play.
The Palace- great historical house. Not that much of a palace palace, you imagine. But it is still full with history and arts especially from 20ies.
Our 4 year old loved to he animal explorer, trying to spot different animals in different rooms and stamp his map. He was super excited. Only downside to that was that the lady who gave us the map said there will be a reward afterwards as a sticker book or so. And on the map itself it said get your sticker at the entrance. But there was no sticker book and not even a sticker. Instead we were offered to choose a badge that anyway always should be available for kids who are members of English Heritage. And it is hard for kids to explain that there is not what they expected. At the end after we asked the member of staff if that really is what a reward is supposed to be. Then they pulled out a sticker sheet.
What impressed me most was cloackroom. As even in London theatres there are no cloackrooms. But in Eltham palace there are cloakrooms where you can leave your bags in the lockers and hang your coats so you can enjoy your visit not getting super hot or carrying your backpaks- it is very good especially going there with kids and having loads of stuff with you.
Also outdoors is very beautiful and it is quite a big territory to roam. There are beautiful gardens and we could imagine ourselves coming here later this year for a picnic or another lovely day out. Going there with kids if you take it slow and in good weather you will spend most of the day there easily. We will be back. Thank you.

Dear Anchina, thank you so much for your great review, we are so glad you all enjoyed it. Just to clarify, when the children complete their animal trail they need to take it to the shop where they receive the sticker so sorry this wasn't made clear.

There aren’t many places in London where you can see Art Deco interiors like this - money appears to have been no object when the house was built in the 1930s. The detail of the decoration is worth spending time over, and the circular reception hall really feels like an ocean liner (as intended). The gardens were also enjoyable, even in October, and the cafe with its outdoor seating (just right for catching the autumn sun) provided a good lunch, although the choice was a bit limited, presumably as visitor numbers are down due to COVID. A great place to visit, particularly as there are so few which offer this kind of experience.

I came here 11 years ago and this place was in pristine condition. But today it’s just very run down. Plus full of shouting kids and differing folks with dogs....in the house. The cafe was a joke......badly staffed and a line up that took 30 mins to get a very poor coffee. I won’t be back. Outside much better than inside!!!

Hi Rick, thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Eltham Palace. We are sorry to hear that your visit did not meet your expectations but if you choose to visit in January it will inevitably be not at it's cleanest due to the weather. You are right saying there was a dog in the house on Sunday, an assistance dog enabling a lady to visit with hearing loss. We positively encourage children to visit as they are the members of the future and whose income we rely on to open such properties to the public. Sundays can be very busy so please expect to wait to be served in the cafe.

Booked a ghost tour at Eltham Palace for 29th Oct at 7pm with 5 friends. Not sure what to expect but details said it would be outside. Arrived expecting a spooky walk around the grounds in the dark. Not so. Completely inside & consisted of 3 actors telling ghost stories whilst audience stood around watching. Lit by electric candlelight so not particularly dark & certainly not remotely spooky let alone scary. We were shuffled from room to room and could hear the repeat of the 1st actor with the new tour during the 2nd story which was irritating and added to the lack of atmosphere. No special effects whatsoever. No loud noises or cold air wafting through. Actors were clearly experienced but stories too long & in last case virtually incomprehensible & rambling as narrator supposed to be drunk which made him hard to understand. Very very disappointed and frankly not worth the £17.50 ticket price. Felt like something massively missing & almost as though it was a rehearsal for the main event - maybe it was! We came away thinking “was that it then” & frankly felt ripped off. I almost never leave reviews but this was just so disappointing. Have now read the reviews from last year & see some of the same comments were made about lack of special effects but clearly we’re not taken on board. This could have been so much better with just a little more thought. No idea why it was inside when weather clear with no rain forecast. Love Eltham Palace but this just felt like a money making scheme to lure people in out of hours!

Thank you for taking the time to review the ghost tours at Eltham Palace, we are sorry that they didn't live up to your expectations . They were inside as we had complaints last year that it was too cold outside and people were disappointed not to see the beautiful Art Deco interiors in the semi-darkness. Sound effects were used to add to the atmosphere although we cannot employ smoke machines inside such a delicate historic environment as they leave an oily deposit. The tours were very popular with all tickets sold and we had a group of people leave early as they considered the event too scary!

Felt jaded and worn. I felt a bit like that too after the visit. Winds meant the gardens were closed which was a shame as it is very expensive for a half hour visit round the house. Really not much to see and not very interesting stories about the not very interesting rich (coulthard?) owners who refurbished it in such gloomy style. Best bit is the walk to it with horses and donkeys to pet while looking out at the Shard which feels very close!

Went on one of the first ghost tours last night - great actors telling ghost stories during a short walk around the grounds, especially the maid. Good value. Would suggest the occasional shadowy figure appearing in a window or on a balcony at key points in the stories would have been the icing on the cake.

Just a shame that despite reminders, people still couldn't socially distance as they were so desperate to be at the front and couldn't leave 2 metres from the person in front when walking through the grounds, so we felt the need to put masks on even though outside.

We were very excited to visit the house and gardens, especially at the time of the Halloween "Spooktacular"! However, was very disappointed. Extra charge of £4 per child to carve a pumpkin and, although the website made out that there would be people dressed up and lots to do, we only saw 3 people dressed up and they were nothing to do with Halloween! A few stickers representing Halloween put on the windows at the cafes and that was it! A talk on burning witches which was very boring with people walking out. Sorry, but the house (and grounds) is beautiful, but we had 2 very disappointed/bored children to deal with. Total waste of time and to advertise this as a Halloween special week is totally misleading! Avoid.

Thank you Shelley for reviewing your visit to Eltham Palace. Just a reminder that, besides the pumpkin carving, all the other activities were at no extra charge and the £4 charge included the pumpkin, a carving kit and 30 minutes help from a member of staff. We did get lots of positive feedback but we do understand that we cannot please everyone. The statement below is from a review on 25th October. The activities put on for the school holiday looked well planned, exciting and got the children really looking at the rooms. They were obviously popular.

A 15 minute walk from Mottingham station, we found Eltham palace, converted in the 1930s into a family home where the Great Hall gives an indication of the rich artchitecture of the palace. It was nearly derelict when it was restored by the Courtauld family, to incorporate original medieval features into an otherwise ultra-modern 1930s design. Stephen and Virginia Courtauld travelled widely, and kept records of each voyage. The interiors are from Scandinavia, Venice, Egypt inspiration, reflecting the well travelled owners. They even kept a pet lemur which had a small home of its own. the audio tour was really good, to explain the various artworks, furniture and decoration.

We enjoyed a wonderful visit to Eltham. It is saturated in medieval and modern history. The authentic art -deco is spectacular and it is extremely easy to negotiate the interior of the building. The information boards provided are detailed and accessible. I would recommend watching the short film on the first floor before you tour the building as it provides a concise historical overview. The gardens are also a wonderful feature of this English Treasure.
