My girlfriend and her friends invited me along to a London Graffiti Tour. I know nothing about graffiti but I have lived in London for years (and East London too). We have an interest in street art and enjoy taking photos but we never seek it out. We chose this as a break from the all too familiar 'getting lashed this weekend with friends'.
Frank, our guide, is incredibly knowledgeable. He was very patient with us (half the group was 40 minutes late!), showing us around Old Street, down to Great Eastern Street and onto Brick Lane. All in all the tour was 2+ hours for £20 a head. Throughout the tour we learned about signature artists' styles and 'promotion' within the graffiti community. Frank has been doing this for years but with humility and fascinating anecdotes.
We stopped into 2 separate street art galleries along the way which I endorse heartily.
Graffiti art rarely lasts long so tours are likely to be different each time. This alone makes it worth doing as each experience is likely to be unique. If you are unfamiliar with East London, this is a great way of getting to know the area. The tour finishes in Brick Lane about lunch time which is very well timed. I highly recommend this tour to anyway, even if you have lived in London/East London for years.

This is the best street art tour in London.
Just consider that the guide is the street artist Steam 156, alias Frank Malt. He saw the birth of Graffiti art and Street art in 1982, and so he knows basically all about the matter, and especially about street art in London. He knows stories and anecdotes about street artists (some ones are friends of him) and popular masterworks, and even about the train graffiti phenomenon. You'll see the works of Alice, Pure Evil, Ben Wilson, Ben Eine, and of course the street art star Banksy, and many, many other ones.
All happens between Shoreditch and Brick Lane.
Other guides are good, maybe, and studied a lot of informations on books, but Frank is different, Frank learned all on the field.

We booked a tour with this company but had to cancel it a couple of days later due to an unexpected family commitment.
The email response to the cancellation request was very rude and obnoxious!!
The curt email asked, "Why did you book it then?!" and said refunding would be a 'hassle' !!
We were intending to rebook when we knew our revised schedule (although we did not mention this in our email to them).
If this is an example of their customer service I'm glad we didn't go ahead with the first booking.
Shortly after we did a similar tour with another company that was excellent.

tour guide frank "steam156" did my tour. very informative and great patience throughout the whole tour. i did the 3 hour tour, it was great to see all the artwork and frank explained about each artist in detail.we dont just visit ordinary street art. you get to see various types from stencil form to sculpture and frank explains the history behind it. knowing that steam has written books in response to all the different street art around the world. sounds like he has a lot of experience and knowledge. its worth doing this tour. worth while.

I love street art and graffiti and decided to join Frank on his tour. It was the best 2 hours I spent recently walking around Old Street / Shoreditch areas. Frank is very knowledgeable and has lots of interesting facts to share with his groups. You can definitely feel that graffiti and street art is a real passion of his. And he knows everybody who is worth knowing! He took us to the best parts of London and gave us a great overview of the art form, the different techniques and showed us some beautiful artwork. I will definitely join the tour again and will recommend it to my friends.

Frank, the tour guide, is a street art connoisseur. Having been an artist himself, I am led to believe he is one of the very few, or maybe even the only ex street artist who guides around East London, rather than basic tour guides trying to cash in on a popular day out. Frank was awesome... friendly, knowledgeable and eager to answer any of our questions, which there were lots of! I couldn't recommend this tour enough to anyone interest in graffiti and street art... You'll really have your eyes opened! Thanks again Frank.

Frank knows his stuff. He is calm, down to earth and gets on with the tour. Having been in the business for 30 years he can tell you from the inside what its like to be a graffiti artist. The whole tour is designed, not just for tourists but for Londoners too. Our children -8 and 10- loved it and want to paint the whole town now! What have I done ? They were so inspired by the tour.
There was one bit that was certainly inappropriate for children but Frank warned us in advance and we were able to leave the children on the corner in a safe place, close to the area, and go and see it ourselves, taking just a few minutes.
The variety of styles was amazing and we even saw some street artists at work.
Thanks Frank

The Street Art /Graffiti tours led by "Steam 156" will give you best value for money. He knows the artists, he knows the places, he knows what he is talking about. A 2-3 hour tour from Old Street might be a good start and if you're already all in for street art, don't hesitate to go for an All City Tour. You will not be disappointed! Don't hesitate, go for any of the tours, but remember to wear comfortable shoes :-)
