Polka Theatre is one of the few venues in the UK which is dedicated to producing and presenting world-class theatre for children aged 0 - 13 years. Since the doors opened in 1979, this unique venue has been entertaining children with resonant, engaging and exciting theatre.Over 100,000 children a year come to Polka and are inspired, stimulated and engaged by theatre, often for the first time. Polka strives to stir the emotions, spark the imagination and, most of all, entertain. Its two theatre spaces, the Main Theatre and the Adventure Theatre are designed especially for children so that their first taste of theatre is welcoming and relevant. It’s also a free resource, where local families can ‘pop in to play’ - to explore our exhibition areas, dressing-up and reading corners, our playground, garden and cafe.

Being a primary school teacher, it was ideal to have a cohort of young children come see James & the Giant Peach before the summer holidays. The actors & actresses thoroughly involve the audience through interactions, playing characters & responses. The show was very creative & most enjoyable! The staff were friendly & helpful with us, especially as we led... More

My older son (5 years) and husband watched the fantastic production of James and the Giant Peach while my daughter (3 years) and I saw Chester Tuffnut for under 5s. Both fabulous productions! Loved the outdoor play area, extremely helpful and friendly staff and creative activities for children (pretend play trunk with costumes, the interactive bus in the foyer etc).... More

I took my grandchildren, aged 5 and 8, to the Polka theatre during half term last week. What a great experience. All the staff were welcoming and very friendly. The snacks and drinks weren't extortionately priced. There were attractions for the children to play with. The show itself was as professional as any I have seen and the children were... More

My children are 11 and 9, and somehow today was our first visit! Not sure why we haven't been before! We saw 'James and the Giant Peach' which was absolutely first class in its acting and staging! I won't spoil surprises for anyone reading by describing it, but I can confirm that it is ideal entertainment for older children and... More

My children were entranced by both the show and the venue, especially the dressing up and rocking horses in the foyer, and the wendy house in the garden. There is an unpretentious cafe with a well thought out and reasonably priced menu suitable for kids and adults. Wouldn't hesitate to go back.

A favourite place now for a number of years. My children have grown up as this being their local entertainment for term time activity and shoes and holiday fun workshops A brilliant venue, catering for all needs, fab space and atmosphere, lovely friendly staff. Couldn't recommend highly enough !! 💛

Lovely theatre but the show wasn't at all what we had expected. My granddaughter sobbed that the beautiful Snow White never appeared. I hadn't expected two ladies doing a bit of role play, that the Seven Dwarfs would actually be called miners and the 7 miners were portrayed as hard boiled eggs in egg cups. Maybe we should have been... More

This is a lovely small theatre well set up for children. We saw Snow White and the 7 dwarves. The two ladies dressed as servants telling the story did their best but we were expecting actors. Several children around kept asking where big snow white was as there was a doll playing the role. Not really what we expected but... More
