On the corner of old street and whitecross street there is a small truck that sells Thai food. I am not exaggerating to say its the best Thai food I have tasted outside of Thailand. The food is so fresh and rich with ingredients. £5 a portion and the lady wil give you a half and half if you want to mix up curries. I recommend the Beef one but they are all so fresh and delicious. You can get crispy wontons for £1 extra too. I hope this truck is still there.

Having seen this market featured on various television programmes, and being a bit of a foodie myself, I had to see what all the fuss was about in person. After a 5 minute walk from the Barbican tube station I was greeted by a fairly long and narrow street lined on each side with delicious food and flavours from all over the world! The very first stall I came across was that of Andy Bates and his lovely Mum, Eat My Pies, which was laden with home baked goodies that I couldn't resist. The custard tart had the best flavour and texture of any that I have ever eaten and their variety of scotch eggs are absolutely delicious! I bought a smoked haddock scotch egg and a full English breakfast scotch egg which I have since eaten on my return home and they were amazing, still with runny yolks too! I also treated myself to a burrito from Luardo's for lunch which was huge, packed full of great flavours and excellent value for money. I bought many other things from other stalls too and could spend all day talking about each and every item but instead strongly suggest you go and discover flavours from England, Mexico, Italy, Thailand, India, Turkey, Brazil, Germany and Spain for yourself. I will be back as soon as I possibly can and only wish that I did not live 150 miles away!

Am not a fan of food street markets which clearly lack hygiene levels. Walking past at the end of the market or when they set up, I see that many vendors disregard common hygiene rules. The food may look inviting but having seen food trays with food placed on the ground and then used to serve customers is not ideal. The street itself is smelly and left in a state after each day when market closes. Messy liquids and fat spill on the street and pavement and is left like that ready for the morning after when the market is set up again. Sorry, it's a no for me. I like the buzz and vibe, but this is one of London's dirtiest street market affairs.

I actually live on this street and if you saw the state of how some of the stalls clean up after themselves including their grills and Equipment ETC you wouldnt eat from here if it was a Restauraunt it would be Closed down Islington COuncil should be awarding food star ratings to the stalls so we can see who is clean and hygienic but they probably wont as most of the Stalls Would go.
The Only Stalls that clean up properly after they have finished for the day are
The Pie and Mash Stall on Roscoe Street
The Hog Roast Stall
and The Pulled Pork Wrap stall outside William Hill
The Catering Vans are also Clean but all the other Stalls are rotten i have seen them taking dirty food trays away and then bring them back the next day and use them again without being properly cleaned, it's Disgusting and if it was happening inside a premises serving food the council would have to do something about enforcing hygiene.

I guess i'm quite lucky as this market is about a 2min walk from my office, so as you can imagine I am there every day.
Come rain or shine the markets are out in force offering everything from Italian, Spanish, South Asian, Mexican, Veggie, Fish and much much more.
All the food is great (I have been to every market stall) and all of the stalls have their own way to get your attention. In true middle eastern style the Turkish stall lady will come out and grab your arm and put you in the Que.
The value is great as well. The main meals cost between £4.50/£5 and are very filling.
Overall I'm a huge fan of this place and will continue to go there until I no longer work in the area

While wondering around the City on my own one day using the fabulous map system now posted on most corners throughout London (can't rave enough about this excellent) idea, I followed the signs and came to this fabulous street market as the stall owners were beginning to set up for the day. Note: the market is technically in Islington, nearest to Moorgate or Barbican Tube stations.
Sat and had a wonderfully tasty and inexpensive breakfast outside at the Market Cafe under sunny skies. Described as a traditional workers cafe, the food was fresh and they didn't mind my request for substitutions. Best of all, the lady serving me was extremely friendly as were the locals who popped in for breakfast. There are several other restaurant/pub/cafe options on the street.
The market offers a variety of vendors selling everything from pies, artisan breads, olive oils, books, flowers, tasty take-aways, clothing and bric-a-brac.
Technically the stalls open from 11 to 3 each weekday, although some open earlier, but this makes a great stop on a trek through this part of the city.

Whitecross Street food market is a great place to explore something for lunch. There is food here from around the world: Asia, South American, Europe and beyond. The sellers are friendly and passionate about what they do. It gets busy at lunchtime when the office workers come out, but service is brisk and queues move quickly. Portions can be larger at close of business. The market begins to close down as lunchtime ends. Two stalls sell household items and another sells jewellery at present. Head for Fortune Street Park, just off Whitecross Street, if you like to sit down to enjoy your meal.
