The name Vauxhall comes from the famous pleasure gardens of London. These gardens used to have exciting rides and masked balls for nearly a hundred years. In 1844 a clown sailed down the Thames in a bathtub pulled by geese. Huge crowds gathered to witness this event. Sadly the pleasure gardens had to be shutdown in 1858 because of the toxic stench of the much polluted Thames. There used to be a bridge here built in 1816. It was the first bridge to carry trams pulled by horses. That bridge was demolished and this new beautiful bridge was built on the same spot. The current bridge was completed in 1906 and inaugurated by Prince of Wales before he became King George V. It was designed by Sir Alexander Binnie. It links Pimlico with Vauxhall area. It is a granite bridge enforced by steel. It is a red and yellow bridge embellished with giant bronze statues of allegorical figures crafted by Alfred Drury and Frederick Pomeroy. If you look closely one of these figures is holding a replica of St. Paul’s Cathedral in it’s hands.

Stayed nearby and is another old London Bridge with history. Distinctive red sides make it a focal point for the area. Can get busy and another great south/north of the river connection

One of the lesser known bridges across the River Thames. The bridge connects Pimlico on the north bank with Vauxhall on the south bank, where the MI6 building is located. This part of the riverfront is filled with private and fine looking residences and fine views across the river too. Lambeth bridge is visible and on a clear day, so are Westminster Bridge and the London Eye.

Not a must do, but worth it to see some amazing buildings.

Vauxhall bridge is yet another London bridge with more detail on its sides, better spotted by boat than when on it, also James Bond HQ nearby.

I did not come for the rather ordinary bridge. I came for a photo of the building they call Babylon on the Thames - the MI6 headquarters, bombed in the James Bond movie. It is a most outstanding building for a so called secret service. But it had a huge crane in front of it - damn. So I had to go to the other side of the bridge for a better angle and then saw another set of green buildings that looked sympatico - must have been designed by the same architect. Architect Terry Farrell was influenced by Mayan and Aztec designs in his building.

Built of stone and granite and completed in 1906. Nice bridge to walk by or walk across but not a location to visit in its own right. No significant sites to be seen from the bridge except the massive refurb of Battersea Power Station.

Staying at Vauxhall and taking a stroll at the banks of River Thames, the overall views from Vauxhall bridge or the river side was hardly impressive. After some splendid (and partially masked) views at Westminster, the views at Vauxhall bridge was hardly appealing. Parts of the banks had dried up leaving a muddy feeling.

The only highlight of the place was The Tower (at St. George Wharf) – the highest residential building of London. Alongside, there were some other beautiful buildings at the Wharf. Except for this, and few odd café like the Riverside, all one could see was construction work ongoing and heavy machinery. Nothing picturesque about the place or the bridge – easily could be given a miss.

This is the main bridge crossing the Thames in the Vauxhall part of town. It is an ok bridge but not an eye catching spectacular.

Close to the nightlife of Vauxhall and the business district. It is an ok bridge.
