You are fascinated by it. I went to this area of London in the evening on the recommendation of a friend and I was literally fascinated by it.
The Thames is the jewel in the crown of the neighborhood but when it gets dark you are dazzled by a play of lights that makes your heart beat! And then it's full of clubs and life

Connecting the districts of Southwark and the City, located respectively on the south bank and the north bank of the Thames, in London, the Southwark Bridge is a road bridge (800 ft long by 55 ft wide), made up of 5 arches, relatively uncrowded compared to other London bridges crossing the Thames. Designed by the Scottish civil engineer John Rennie the Elder (1761-1821), the bridge which preceded it, from 1819 to 1921 (consisting of three large cast iron spans supported by granite piers), was replaced by the current bridge, designed by the British architect, watercolorist and engraver Sir Ernest George (1839-1922) and the English civil engineer Sir Basil Mott (1859-1938) and built from 1913 to 1921 by the Scottish engineering company civil Sir William Arrol & Co. of Glasgow. Opened to traffic by “Their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary June 6, 1921” (Plaque located halfway across the bridge, on the west side). Bridge classified as British heritage since 1995. To see nearby: Vintners Place (north-west bank), an office building dating from 1990 with a classical facade (with columns and pediment) as well as the Tate Modern museum, the museum of Clink Prison and the Globe Theater (South Bank).

This is one of the crossings of the Thames linking Bankside and Southwark (south) to The City (north). It was constructed in 1921 by Sir William Arrol replacing an early 19th-century bridge. It is an arch bridge that is nice to see while strolling along the river and fine for walking from one side to the other if convenient.

Southwark Bridge connects the district of Southwark with the City of London. It carries road and pedestrian traffic. There are a number of attractions here -- the Globe Theater, Southwark Cathedral and the Borough Markets. This area south of the Thames is an interesting place to wander around.

I have worked in the Southwark area for over 20 years and have spent many hours walking around the area and even now still discover new sights. It has changed a lot over the 20 years some good and some bad but it is still a lovely area to work and visit. The river is the major focal point with so many great buildings, restaurants etc on its shoreline.

Standing on London Bridge and looking west towards Southwark Bridge as dusk sets in and the lights of the bridge start their light show is an amazing experience as you see the lights softly reflected on the Thames and as the night sets in the colours of the lights get more prominent but not in an intrusive way. The bridge is gorgeous at day time as the sun shines on it but it gets into night mode with the lights on as well. This is one of the bridges I almost never cross but tend to look at more. Luckily, the view is great, as the actual London bridge is not particularly great to look at.

This is a lovely green and lemon coloured bridge. It links the City of London with Southwark. It is the closest to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. There used to be a bridge here in 1818. It was called Queen Street Bridge. The current bridge is an arch bridge which was designed by Basil Mott in 1913. It was inaugurated by King George V in 1921. It took 8 long years to be completed because of WWI. It is a foot and road bridge with minimal traffic these days. I loved the beauty and colour scheme of this Bridge.

Southwark is on the south part of the River Thames. There are many different things to see here including Southwark Cathedral, Borough Market, the Shard and much more.

There are lots of places to get something to eat and drink and places to sit and admire the view, especially by the river.

As a result of the numerous attractions it is a very busy area so if you struggle with crowds you may want to avoid the area or go early in the morning or in the evenings (not at weekends).

One of the many bridges over the River Thames in Central London. Southwark Bridge is an arched bridge that spans the river with the City of London on the north bank and Southwark on the south bank. It's located just east of the Millennium Bridge and west of London Bridge, and not as busy as the other bridges although you can still use it to get to the tourist attractions such as Tate and other museums in the area. On a good clear day, you can still get nice views of the River Thames and some of the major landmarks of London as afar.

Southwark is one of the oldest boroughs of London, stretching from riverside Bermondsey south to Sydenham, with many attractions in between. The northern boundary of the borough is at the south bank of the River Thames, and as highlighted here by many reviews, its riverside location in Inner London is home to many famous London attractions, and thus this riverbank part of the district attracts a high volume of visitors. Attractions and landmarks such at the Tate Modern Art Gallery, the Clink Prison Museum, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the ruins of Winchester Palace, Southwark Cathedral, the Shard, the Tower Bridge, the delightful riverside Thames Walk, and the nearby Borough Market, draw in the crowds. It contains a number of bridges - the Tower Bridge, London Bridge, the Millennium footbridge, Southwark Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge - which connect Southwark with the City of London.

But Southwark is a lot more than these riverside attractions, and the purpose of this review is to tempt you further afield into the rest of Southwark, to explore some of the lesser-known attractions the district has to offer. Here’s my list of my favourite attractions; I have reviewed many of these separately and I know Southwark well - I live in the district! There are lots of others; go exploring and discover the area for yourself!

Parks and gardens: Southwark Park, Dulwich Park, Peckham Rye Common (with the Sexby Gardens)

Museums and art galleries: Old Operating Theatre and Herb Garret, Imperial War Museum, Dulwich Picture Gallery, South London Gallery, White Cube Gallery, Brunel Museum, Design Museum, Fashion and Textile Museum, and the ‘Mayflower’ sites in Rotherhithe

Lovely ‘village-style’ neighbourhoods: East Dulwich (Lordship Lane and North Cross Road) Dulwich Village

Markets: North Cross Road Saturday Market (East Dulwich), East Street Market, Maltby Street (Food) Market, Vinegar Hill Vintage Market; Mercarto Metropolitano

Viewpoints: One Tree Hill (Honor Oak), Nunhead Cemetery, Dawson’s Park (East Dulwich)

History: Nunhead Cemetery

Curiosities: Crossbones Graveyard

Happy exploring!
