You can find this road and foot bridge located after the Blackfriars Bridge. There used to be another granite bridge here which was built in 1817. It was named after the 1815 Battle of Waterloo victory over Napoleon’s forces. As this bridge was built for carriages it was unable to withstand the load of motorised vehicles. So it was decided to rebuild it in 1934. The initial plan was to name it “The Strand Bridge” but later on the Parliment decided to retain the older name. The new bridge was inaugurated in 1945 right after WWII.it was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Interestingly it is also called the “Ladies Bridge”. This is because after the construction was initiated by men the war broke out. So it was left to the women to complete the construction. It was the only Thames bridge that was damaged by German bombs. It was the first reinforced concrete bridge of London. The location of this bridge, on a strategic bend of Thames, offers beautiful views of both the City of Westminster and City of London.

Of all London's bridges, Waterloo Bridge is the most dramatic. The bridge spans the Thames, connecting Southbank with the West End. Waterloo Bridge offers the sight of St Paul's, Westminster and the London Eye. The bridge carries road and foot traffic. Waterloo Bridge featured in several popular movies of the same name. The name Waterloo commemorates the victory of British and allied forces over Napoleon at Waterloo.

PROS
* Plain and functional bridge
* Nice views from it, especially of the Golden Jubilees Bridge and the Tower Bridge in opposite directions

CONS
It is less well-known and less elaborate

"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... as I was walking along the south bank of River Thames, from Westminster towards the Tate Modern Museum

WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
It was free to see it

WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE' AGAIN?
I would look at it if I found myself here again

ADVICE
Don't make a special trip for this one

Set on a slow bend on the river Thames, with the City of Westminster to the West and the City of London to the east Waterloo bridge rightly enjoys its prestigious status as a romantic and spectacular place to view a panorama of London. Take a map to spot the many famous buildings, from the Palace of Westminster to St Pauls Cathedral and many more skyscrapers. And stand and stare at the river, flowing solemnly beneath you in swirls and rivulets as it was the lifeblood of London from prehistory to recent years. No longer a vital artery, the docks have long moved East but the river is cleaner and looks better than it has done for many years. O yes and there's the song by Ray Davies and the boys....

Not worth taking a detour, in my opinion, but when you're in the vicinity you might want to take a walk across the bridge, and take in the views towards quite a few London landmarks.
If you walk across the bridge towards The Strand/Aldwych, you can go to Somerset House, which is beautiful, and free to visit.

Seen in most views of London, Waterloo Bridge crosses from the north Aldwych side across the Thames to the South Bank / IMAX cinema roundabout.
A perfect and popular place to view New Year Eve fire works or to watch the thousands going to work (on a nice morning)
The bridge was the seen of the notorious political assassination of Georgi Markovin 1978.
The exit at the Southbank IMAX side isn't pleasant with the "bull ring" area a regualr haunt for the homeless and druggies.
