The area

Address
Neighborhood: City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighborhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighborhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.

Open House affords an unique opportunity to visit landmark buildings not otherwise open to the public. The Leadenhall Building aka Cheesegrater was built to the design of architects Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners (RSHP), the Rogers bit referring back to what was Richard Rogers and Partners. It was RSHP which organised tours of the fourteenth floor which they have reserved for themselves as the headquarters of their own practice. All very open plan with banks of computer screens for partners and junior employees alike on starfish shaped chairs (not their own design) under a specially adapted ceiling with a layer removed to give it more height; luminous green floor; floor to ceiling double-glazing; a minute River cafe where it is forbidden to cook anything; giant printing rooms and machines; models of fantastic buildings of the future of which my favourite was shaped like a giant glass wine decanter.

There are many unusual buildings on the London skyline including the Gherkin and the Walkie Talkie. There is also the Leadenhall Building which is also known as the Cheese Grater.

To properly admire the building you have to look at it from afar. You can get a good view of it from the South Bank.

If you want to get up close then take a walk into the City of London. Beneath the building there are places to sit. There are also table tennis tables if you want to take on friends at a game of ping pong. There is somewhere to get a drink and there are huge vents which have been decorated.

Informally known as The Cheesegrater for it's distinctive wedge shape. This is a beautifully designed building and worth a detour if in the financial district, just to see. Even up close, the wedge shape can still be seen, but it's best viewed from further away on either the eastern or western end of Leadenhall Street, or even from London Bridge and you can see the Walkie Talkie, Gherkin and the Leadenhall Building all in one go.

This is one of the more unique skyscrapers in the city. Understandably dubbed the Cheesegrater due to its shape. It stands out amongst its peers.

Just passing by the Leadenhall Building when we saw a group of huge transparent globes in the courtyard next to the escalators. It's an installation called Evanescent and the globes are iridescent during daylight but light up with fabulous colours at night.

Very impressive design and structure and put together off-site. I recall it being built very fast. “The Cheese-grater” is it’s nick-name.

The Leadenhall Building, nicknamed the Cheesegrater because of it's shape, is one of many skyscrapers in the area many of which have unusual shapes and nicknames ( e.g. The Walkie Talkie, the Gherkin )
Not sure if you can visit the building as I only viewed from the street
