The area
Neighborhood: Camden
Famous for its sprawling cluster of markets and shops as well as for an embrace of all things counter culture, Camden offers a concentrated version of London street life. From bargain shopping and people watching to rubbing elbows in its abundance of pubs and bars, Camden is the place to be for many a Londoner. It is also home to some of the hottest live music venues in Europe. As packed as Camden High Street and its tributaries can get during the weekends, this neighborhood is right next to some of the city's most beloved outdoor spaces, namely Regent's Park and Primrose Hill.

- Paul HBournemouth, United Kingdom1,768 contributionsThe New Camden TownCamden has changed over the past 20 years and has become a model for urban regeneration. As a result it has lost a large portion of its character that attracted all this attention in the first place. It has become too commercial and overrun with food joints and clothing shops. There are pockets of the old Camden however like The Dublin Castle on Parkway.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 6, 2024

We had a nice walk up the canal from King Cross station, albeit having to dodge idiots on bikes (they should be on the road, not a narrow pedestrian walkway). We walked around the market, and it’s surrounding areas. It’s a visual and nasal feast. Loads of funky street art, stalls and food venders. Most of the stalls are tat or overpriced, but worth a look. We tried some Pakistani street food from The Cheesy Naan vender, lovely food and the fella serving was really friendly. £11.50 for a Chicken Masala, we shared and it was more than enough for two. This used to be a fun place to visit, with lots of unusual independent shops, now it’s a tourist hell hole full of awful souvenir shops and tacky murals. Even Camden Market is a depressing experience these days, where before it had so many really interesting stalls selling crafts and fascinating clothes. There are redeeming features of course. The double Camden Lock and canal side walk are worth seeing, as is the poignant Amy Winehouse statue in the market. The Roundhouse and the Jazz Cafe are good music venues. But overall, this is a pretty average visitor experience.

Camden is a suburb of London just north of central London. The main station is the Tube station on the Northern Line. It is the place where the two branches from Edgware and High Barnet meet and then separate to go via the West End or City of London. They rejoin at Kennington and then go to either Morden or Battersea Power station. As a result it is a busy station with people getting off to go to the area or changing platforms to continue their journey.
There are a couple of other Tube stations in the area, Chalk Farm is at the top end of Camden and is on the Edgware branch. It is close to the Roundhouse concert venue. Mornington Crescent is on the West End branch and is at the start of Camden High Street. It is close to the Koko Club which has had some famous people grace the stage over the years.
Camden Road is part of the London Overground and is served by trains from Stratford and Highbury & Islington going to Richmond, Clapham Junction, Shepherd's Bush and Willesden Junction so there are plenty of ways to get to the area.
There are a number of other music venues near Camden Town station including the Underworld which is below the World's End pub. There is also the Electric Ballroom which has a market at weekends. The Jazz Cafe and Dublin Castle are also nearby.
I would recommend a visit to Camden for all tourists. It's a very cool area and is a great place to hang out.

Camden stood beside the Kentish town manor. It was the property of Charles Pratt, the first Earl of Camden, he decided to develop this area into a commercial enterprise for the educated middle class. But Scottish and the Welsh working class moved in because there was a lot of work for them at the docks, locks and the railways.Pubs were built for them as they worked hard during the day and drank heavily in the evening. Subsequently, scuffles started taking place between these people of different nations. Hence it was decided that four different pubs would be built for each group, Dublin Castle for the Irish, Edinburgh Castle for the Scottish, Pembroke Castle for the Welsh and the Windsor Castle for the English. So these fights were curtailed to some extent. This district has had some famous residents like George Bernard Shaw, Charles Dickens and Amy Winehouse. Venues like the Electric Ballroom, the Dublin Castle and the Roundhouse have proved to be the the launching pad for many other well-known singers who started their careers in this area like Pink Floyd, Cold Play and Madonna.

Soooo, inflation has bitten and what used to cost 1p now costs £1. Yes that’s right, £1 to use possibly the dirtiest, smelliest toilets in London and to make matters worse, there wasn’t any toilet paper. I watched 70 people use these toilets in 15 minutes, £340 an hour income for Camden Market and they are foul!

Great atmosphere and lots of places to eat and drink. Chinese buffet looks like it would be a great place to eat. There's also a Wetherspoon pub called Ice wharf if you want cheap drinks and eats. The market seems to be a bit more expensive than the street shops. Check out the prices first. I bought a few London keyrings ÂŁ1 each or 6 for ÂŁ5. The market stalls were selling the same for ÂŁ2 each. Best to visit at the weekend.

Nothing beats a short visit to Camden Town, that has not changed in years.
It's as if time stood still in the 1960's with quirky shops, odd (mostly high) people and a hectic, young vibe.
Watch out for pickpockets.
