Neighborhood: City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighborhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighborhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.

Staple Inn dates from 1585 when it was originally the wool staple, where wool was weighed and taxed, before coming one of the major commercial law centres serving the nearby Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand. It was one of the Inns of Chancery, specialising in commercial law, which eventually fell into decay in the 19th century. The others were dissolved and most were demolished. It is now the last remaining Inn of Chancery. It survived the Great Fire of London, but was extensively damaged by a German V2 rocket in 1944. It was restored after the end of WW2. It has a distinctive timber-framed façade and an internal courtyard. The façade is a reminder of what High Holborn would have looked like before the Great Fire destroyed the other Tudor-style timber frame buildings in the road. The courtyard is similar to those found at the other Inns of Court, such as Gray's Inn with traditional-style office buildings occupied by barristers' chambers and other legal firms. The historic interiors include a great hall, now used by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. There are lovely gardens behind the courtyard. A wonderfully historic site to visit.

One of the oldest buildings in London. The facade is interesting and beautifully restored. You don't have anything concrete to visit. There are shops on the ground floor. You stop, take a picture, then continue on your way.

Scene for my daughter’s graduation as an actuary. Historic building near Chancery Lane tube, attractive gardens and excellent staff who looked after us very well.
