Neighborhood: City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighborhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighborhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.

No. 1 Poultry is an office and retail building in the City of London on a site once owned by Peter Palumbo and designed by James Stirling. Built in a post-modernist style with putt bricks of pink stone it opened in the 1970s amidst some controversy as it had once been planned to be the site of a Mies van der Rohe tower along the lines of the Seagram building in New York. The Stirling building can be accessed from Bank underground station concourse via an enclosed and rather gloomy atrium, from which lifts ascend to what is, arguably, its best feature, the Coq d’Argent Restaurant (part of the D and D group) on the top floor.

No. 1 Poultry is a building opposite the Royal Exchange and the Bank of England building that was redeveloped in 1997 into this postmodern design. The design utilises bold colours of interleaved pink and yellow limestone, fixed in stripes and blocks of colour. The interior atrium at the centre is even more colourful, a riot of blue pink and yellows.
I a little conflicted about the whole design, it's colourful and anywhere else, I would like it. As it stands in Bank amongst some grand old buildings, it just seems oddly out of place.

I remember the old fashioned shops on this site before this modern building was constructed. I have never liked it and it looks very dated by modern standards and it is quite dark inside. The restaurant on the top was expensive and not great when I went years ago. The garden was pleasant though.

This commercial building opposite the Bank of England was only finished in 1997 but has already been granted listed status, though it was once voted one of the worst buildings in London - how times change. The rose pink stone structure is something to see from ground level, but if you can see it from above in person or photos you will see even more strongly the appearance of the prow of a ship surging into the road, or a submarine rising, complete with conning tower! Listed in the book 1001 Buildings you must see before you die.
