About
Merton Priory Chapter House is arguably one of the most important heritage sites in England, linked to the origin of English Law and the likes of King John, King Henry VIII and Thomas Beckett. This Ancient Monument is 900 years old and from 1114 until its dissolution in 1538, Merton Priory was one of the country's biggest and most influential monastic houses. The visitor centre and museum are currently under construction and the centre is due to open to the public in Summer/Autumn 2018.

A new and well curated historical attraction in Merton
Jun 2019 • Couples
Merton Priory was established 900 years ago and was once one of England's most important centres of religion and learning. Until recently, nothing of it could be seen except part of a wall along Merantun Way, however now the foundations of the Chapter House under Merantun Way are open every Sunday until the end of October. They are free to enter and staffed by enthusiastic volunteers; donations are gratefully accepted. There are some excellent displays concerning the history of the Priory and what monastic life would have been like there.
The site can be reached from Colliers Wood station, by following the Wandle path beside Sainsbury's, and after crossing Merantun Way, the entrance can be found a short distance to the left.
