Address
Neighborhood: City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighborhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighborhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.

Great surprise with fantastic service.

We were staying locally as a work group. It was a case of dumping our bags and finding somewhere for a drink. This was a great treat. They were able to fit us in as a table of 6. Great choice of wine, and reasonable price for the quality. We had two platters too. Just what we were looking for, with knowledgeable and friendly staff. £95 for 2 bottles of wine, 2 platters, water and one short.

All great until bullied into paying discretionary service charge...
Oct 2019 • Friends
We had a few drinks here this evening (a party of 3). The wine was lovely and the place is very quaint. The service was ok - nothing to rave about. However upon receiving our bill, there was a discretionary service charge added (12.5%). We calculated our bill less the full service charge but with a tip. However, the server informed us we had underpaid and needed to pay the full service charge. If this is so, the service charge should not state discretionary. This definitely soured our experience and unfortunately we will not be recommending this wine bar to colleagues/friends which is a great shame as we all work in the surrounding area.

Great place for a quiet drink

I was introduced to the place recently and was surprised to discover that it had been there three years. I did not look at what food was available but a good place to meet someone, particularly inside. Outside is a bit more obviously more exposed to passers by, but inside excellent for a good chat if you are a small group.

Popped into to the City to see an old chum. He took me here. It was a lovely sunny evening and we were able to relax and with a couple of glasses of excellent wine watching the world go home. Comfy chairs, good service and a fine selection of wines.

Good wine selection, more than can be said for the venue.

Over priced, underwhelming, no atmosphere. Early evening but the member of staff seemed disinterested and in a hurry to get finished. Watch out for the corkage and service charges.

Dear Peter Thank you for recently visiting our shop and I am very sorry to read you did not fully enjoy your first time with us. Our opening hours are monday friday from 10am until 10pm. As this area of the city is very quiet over the weekends, we've decided since day one not to trade on saturdays and sundays. From what I understand, your arrival time in the shop was approximately 9.45pm on friday night. At that time of the day, particularly on a friday in january, having a busy place is very challenging I am afraid, to my great disappointment… This would also be around the time when we normally call the last order as we do not serve drinks after 10 due to a licensing policy. As we are primarily a shop, our prices are retail based, not restaurant or bar prices, which is quite significant. Our menu offers about 60 wines by the glass, at all sort of prices. The rest of the wines from our 400 bottles selection are available to drink by the bottle or to take away. If you wish to buy a bottle of wine to take away with you, we will charge our retail price. If you decide to stay and drink in, our policy is to add only an extra £10 as a corkage per bottle we open. Indeed, while some places with a similar concept will add a percentage on the cost of the bottle (meaning the more you spend in a bottle, the higher will be the corkage), our policy here at St Swithins is to apply a fix corkage, £10. Basically, whatever you spend in the cost of the bottle, won’t affect the cost of the corkage. The service charge (although not compulsory), like most places, will then be added on the final bill, however, will not be applied on our £10 corkage. It can be quite challenging to find a place in London where you can drink good wine at decent prices. I believe ours remain very reasonable. Once again, I am very sorry we did not meet your expectations and hopefully we will have the opportunity to redeem ourself on your next visit. Thank you Frederic

I leave fair and balanced reviews for every restaurant / bar and attraction that I visit. I feel its only right that I leave a review post our quick visit to this place last night.

We had two glasses of white wine prior to ordering two more of the taste size glasses. Upon receiving the two sample size glasses, we noticed 4 very small worms wiggling away inside of the wine. 4 in one glass and 1 in the other. We notified the guy who was serving us almost immediately, who was equally mystified. He of course did make sure to not charge us for those two glasses.

The first two glasses were OK. But please make sure to check your wine very clearly before you take a sip. I'm sure it was just a one off or maybe an issue with the pipes.

Dear Roz Apologies for the late reply and thank you for visiting the shop on thursday 25th of October. We are very sorry to hear that you did not fully enjoy your first experience with us. Our primary goal here at St Swithins wine shippers is to deliver good quality and good value wines to our guests. As well as the service, cleaning in general remains a big part of our daily task (that includes the deep clean of the pipes on a regular basis). I was, indeed, quite surprised I must say, to notice the floaters in both your glasses. However, what appeared to be moving in your glasses, and in your opinion to be worms (please note that the wine was swirling when you were pointing this out), could have well been something else… I explained that sometimes, with some of the unfiltered wines especially, you can, towards the end of the bottle, get a cloudy leftover or sometimes a deposit even. Of course, and whatever it was in the end, shouldn’t have been in your glass in the first place. I did offer to change the wines straight away, which was declined by you. Following our conversation regarding the incident, I double-checked everything (pipes, bottles, glasses), but it all seemed to be clean and I couldn't see any trace of worms anywhere. I then decided to leave the ‘faulty’glass of wine on the side to take a closer look later on as we were fairly busy at that point. I eventually realised that it was in fact, a few bits of cottons from the white napkins we polish glasses with. They tend to leave some particles, especially when they get a bit damp. I really appreciate the fact that your feedback here is not overall negative, however, I must admit that I find your 'worms' statement a bit 'unfair' as I don’t believe that was the case on this occasion. Neverthess, please accept my apologies once again. I really hope that we can redeem ourselves, hopefully on your next visit and please do not hesitate to email at info@stswithinswineshippers.com in case of any other concerns you'd like to share with us. Many thanks With kind regards, The manager

75 ml order was consistently 5ml short. Good selection by the glass. Staff smoke next to outside tables.

Dear CX_Travel_Man Apologies for the very late reply. First of all, many thanks for giving us your feedback and for visiting St Swithins wine shippers on tuesday 25th of september. We are very sorry to hear that you did not fully enjoy your experience with us. We always strive to offer a good service and create a great atmosphere on our terrace and we are sorry if if you felt it was not the case for you. While we are making various measurements available by the glass (starting from 50ml), in order for our customers to have access to some exquisite wines, I am aware that those can look a bit small sometimes, but I can assure you that our enomatic machines pours are very accurate. In regards to our staff smoking policy, I can confirm that I wouldn't allow any of them to smoke close to our terrace, especially not at a busy time like it was when you were attending. Anything happening outside our terrace area is I am afraid, not under our supervision. Having said that, I do apologise for the inconvenience it may have caused you. We'd like to thank you again for your feedback and your recent visit and please do not hesitate to email us in case of any other concerns you think we should look at @ info@stswithinswineshippers.com We look forward to your return anytime soon! Cute little wine bar and shop
Feb 2018 • Couples
Lovely little bar/wine shop in the heart of the City, a minute away from Bank or Cannon Street. Good selection of decent wines. But most importantly great service. The staff are very attentive and do listen to customers. I was recommended a perfect white. Great place for an after work drink.
