“2019 Bow Open Show” NUNNERY GALLERY (London) – Jonjon's official review
Oct 2019
LOCATION. Located in the middle of two tube stations and beside a noisy flyover, the nunnery is not an easy catch at all. Nearest station: Bow Road. A nine-minute walk eastbound along A11 will take you to the gallery.

If you come with the DLR, the Bow Church Station is even closer.

THE VENUE. The gallery is run by Bow Arts, a charity aiming to promote artists from the area and providing support for them (including studio space and accommodation).

BACKGROUND. Nineteen artists have been selected by curator Carey Young with all works theme linked to “our current political moment”.

MY FAV. HK Kim’s Soon, Life will become more Interesting, in which traditional Korean wood colouring is to be tested with contemporary themes. Fitted with hilarious / horrifying puns here and there.

(And I love how one of the works is priced at an unbelievable £1,000,000 with proceedings going to charity.)

A great hidden gem
Mar 2019 • Couples
We travelled all the way from Coventry to see the Doreen Fletcher exhibition and were not disappointed. The gallery is fairly small, but it packed in a lot of very interesting works. The cafe also looked homely and inviting.

Wonderful exhibition
Mar 2019 • Friends
As I was visiting a friend who lives a short walk from the gallery, she suggested we go to the Doreen Fletcher exhibition. I really can’t recommend this highly enough; the paintings are beautiful and the attention to detail is stunning. It’s wonderful to see so many paintings in one place which reflect and capture the personality and atmosphere of the local area. Do go along - and take your friends!

Lovely gallery - excellent current exhibition, in just the right location
Mar 2019 • Solo
I made a special journey for a first time visit to this gallery specifically to view the Doreen Fletcher, ‘A Retrospective’ temporary exhibition. I was not disappointed (but then I do like painting buildings myself).

The gallery is small but homely – the exhibition was displayed in two adjacent rooms with a few paintings in the next door café, directly accessible from within.

The gallery was lovely and the exhibition excellent; what a fantastic idea it is to get this collection together and display it in the area in which the artist primarily worked, recording many of the ordinary East End of London urban landscape scenes, some of which have already been lost. It makes for a good social history record.

I’m glad I made the journey. The exhibition, whilst not massive, is great.

Great space for local art
Feb 2019 • Couples
This is a lovely gallery in an interesting historical building, and a great place for the exhibition of Doreen Fletcher’s paintings of the East End. Especially appreciated was the photo journey on their website of the walking route to the Gallery from Bow Road Underground Station which was a lovely touch! Only criticism is that service in the coffee shop was not very friendly which was a great pity as it rather broke the spell. But Doreen Fletcher's paintings were very well displayed in a setting that made it a pleasure to view them.

Enjoyable Local Art
Feb 2019 • Couples
The Nunnery is located around half a mile from Bow Road tube station and a bit less from Bow Church on the DLR.

The current exhibition is the work of local artist Doreen Fletcher who specialises in local scenes, with pictures of the likes of old shops, pubs and stations from the late seventies through to the current day.

We thoroughly enjoyed the pictures despite having no connection with the local area.

Enjoyable as it was, it only took around 20-30 minutes to view everything, so it might not be the best idea if coming from afar unless you have other plans in the area.

Admission is free.

Doreen Fletcher East End paintings
Feb 2019 • Couples
If you like Stepney and Bow and you were around in the 80’s then this is an exhibition for you. Takes you back. The paintings are crisp and bright. A nice little gallery not far from Bow Tube station. I didn’t take any pics out of respect for the artist but now I wished I’d had....display on until March 2019.

A small gallery
Jan 2019 • Couples
We attended the Doreen Fletcher exhibition and it was well laid out, no bad lighting bouncing off the pictures. Not a large venue but interesting and this particular show was excellent. There were a couple of dozen other visitors on the Saturday we went so not crowded. Cafe is small and simple, coffee and tea ok, cakes on offer were croissants, pan au chocolate and cinnamon pastry. Not actual cake.

What a find!!
Dec 2017 • Friends
I know this area very well and didn't know it was there. We had been to Southampton to see the Mayfair to Mile End art exhibition and really enjoyed it. We then found out that Michael Rosen and Emma Louise Williams were putting on an Exhibition called the Working Artist The East London Group at this gallery. This provided different paintings but all from the same group of artists. It was very very good, well curated and interesting. Bow Arts run this place and I have put myself on their mailing list because I would like to see more of the new artists that they champion.. There is an excellent café and a bus stop nearly outside. No parking though. A good "how to find us" is available on line. Well worth a visit.
