Prefer the exterior

I like visiting churches but if honest prefer the exterior to the interior. Understand it was rebuilt after the war.

Wonderful to see it polished up so beautifully

St Mary’s is slap bang in the middle of Upper Street and the heart of the community. It’s been fantastic to see the restoration unfolding.

Almost completely destroyed in the Blitz
Sep 2019 • Family
On the third night of the London Blitz on 9 September 1940 a bomb destroyed nearly all of St. Mary’s Islington leaving only the tower and spire intact. This provided an opportunity for its rebuilding as a 5000 cubic metre space for the renaissance of evangelical worship to a design by John Seely and Paul Paget. It features deep clear windows admitting an unusually large amount of light. The east and west ends have murals by Brian Thomas. The lectern, baptismal font and Royal coat of arms survived bombing and so appear in the existing church.

Family Significance

Back in the late 1800s, my great-great grandfather Eborn was Christened in this church before his parents left England for America. While the vast majority of this church was destroyed during the bombings of WWII the front portion and tower are still original. It was such a deeply amazing experience to be here and stand where my ancestors had once been.
