Impressive community project
Oct 2019 • Solo
Not sure it’s that much of a secret any more as St. Mary’s Garden, a 0.3 hectare site on the corner of Pearson Street and Appleby Street, as well as the activities it promotes, has been well documented and advertised since its creation over 25 years ago. Built on a site of some bombed Georgian houses and named after the nearby St. Mary’s Church which suffered the same fate in the Blitz, it describes itself as an open access garden providing both community access and horticultural therapy to those who are socially excluded or disadvantaged by reason of their physical or mental health needs. It is a City & Guilds Accredited Training Centre affording opportunities for those living in Hackney and beyond to gain qualifications for working life and in horticulture. Plants and produce are available for sale to members of the public. Workshops are organised for schools and community projects. Altogether a rather splendid and inspiring use of a piece of land. Not open weekends.

Peaceful community gardens
Jun 2017 • Couples
Just 2 minutes walk from Hoxton Overground Station. Free admission to this area of community gardens. Be inspired by the use of recycled materials to make planting areas, arbours, seating areas and pond.

There are many different areas to sit in and relax. Lots of birds dart amongst the foliage. A fox wandered through without fear.

The flowers range from the popular to the more unusual. There is a wide range of plants for sale at very reasonable prices. Prices are by size of pot, which makes life easier. Take some bags because you will want to buy some.

No loos on site that we saw.

Well worth a visit.
