The area

Neighborhood: Westminster
If you only had an afternoon to experience London on a grand scale, Westminster would be a wise place to start. The ornate Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey sit adjacent at a corner of Parliament Square, and a short stroll along The Mall leads to Buckingham Palace. Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column are just up the road as well. As captivating as the architecture is, the wonders of Mother Nature are highlights of the area too. St James's Park (arguably London's loveliest), the expansive Green Park, and pedestrian friendly tree lined paths along the river showcase the exquisite manicure provided by English gardeners. Just beyond the landmarks and the gorgeous outdoor spaces, quiet residential squares and age old local pubs offer a more subdued take on this global seat of power in the heart of London.

Austere and monumental sculpture dedicated to George V, the great-grandfather of the current King of the United Kingdom. The work, artistically not excellent, was made in the last century in Portland stone. I made his discovery on a tour of Westminster.

Unusual to find a stone statue in and around Westminster. Almost all the many others in the area are bronze on stone or marble plinths. It was carved in white Portland stone before WW2 but was hidden at a quarry to protect it from bombing until it was finally unveiled in 1947. The detailing on the statue is excellent but otherwise there’s nothing too special about it and there are early signs of pollution damage.

Stands opposite the Houses of Parliament and it’s a stern statute with little expression. Not one worthy of seeking it out.

It’s one of hundreds of lovely, intricately carved statues around the village of Westminster.

This statue can be found in the Green Space between Lady Chapel and Jewel Tower.

Have a look at this if you’re passing by and giving Jewel Tower a visit!

The statue as a great location behind the Abbey and in front of Parliament in the Old Palace Yard. It was erected in 1947.

Sits on a pillar overlooking the Parliament Buildings and it’s done in a white stone. Looks good but nothing exceptional.

One amongst the thousands of statues. Situated high up so difficult to see the detail. But it’s located on the street between Houses of Parliament and Westminister Abbey. Nice quiet area to stand and observe the statue and the surroundings.

A well executed standing statue of King George V (reigned 1910-1936) looking across the road at Parliament. When I walked by recently I was struck by the thought that this figure from the past, memorialised in stone, was one that our current queen knew well. The then King doted on the young princess - between them they reigned for 3/4 of the 20th Century.

Take 30 seconds to stand and ponder.

A lovely statue opposite the palace of Westminster. It is very high and difficukt to see a lot of the detail in it. A fitting tribute however to the Queen's grandfather.

While on a recent visit to London on Armistice Day we were walking around Parliament Square along Abingdon Street when we happened upon this very impressive statue of Queen Elizabeth 2 grandfather.
It stands on a large base & tall pillar made from portland stone.
There are so many statues across London with each one being very unique.
Do take your time to look as you walk.
