Top ways to experience Burlington House and nearby attractions

The area
Neighborhood: Mayfair
Set beside some of London's best parks and home to world-class galleries, luxurious hotels, and famed thoroughfares, the ultra upscale Mayfair is one of London's most exclusive haunts. Here the shopping is haute, the dining is exquisite, and the nightlife is vibrant. A casual stroll through the area’s chic streets will reveal that Michelin stars and chauffeured cars are practically the norm here. Even if you're on a tight budget, this exceptionally well connected swath of Central London is worth exploring, if only for the chance to take a peak at the goings on of upper crust English society.

It’s more of a vast estate than just a building, housing the marvellous (and free to enter, apart from the major exhibitions) Royal Academy of Arts and five learned Societies.
I come here about 3 or 4 times a year mainly to attend exhibitions at the Royal Academy, but have also attended events and lectures at some of the other institutions.
Even if you don’t have much time to spare it’s worth wandering into the courtyard to take in the scene, or enter the RA itself to view, amongst other treasures, a Michelangelo sculpture and a life size copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Last Supper’ - completely free of charge.

I'm not really into art - but I was invited to go with a friend and I'm all up for new experiences... I was impressed from the 1st moment... even if some of the "art" was a little "modern" for my personal taste. However, the staff were all very friendly and welcoming and there was plenty of varied exhibits. My only criticism was that it would be helpful if there were more places for those of us who are not very mobile to sit down - I nearly sat on an exhibit in desperation!!!

Sorry but being a south Asian woman. I feel attacked for even being here. The colour of my skin was definitely a problem. If you’re a person of colour, don’t be shocked if the first thing you see is a white man questioning why you’re there. The proceeded to follow me and my mother.

Burlington House is more than the home of the Royal Academy of Arts - their entrance is on the north side of the courtyard. There are various other learned societies arranged around the other three sides with (very) occasional exhibitions so it is possible to look inside but it takes some planning.
The courtyard itself is the thing though - a top-notch architectural space.

Our most recent stay in this wonderful city saw us exploring parts of the city which we had not spent much time in previously. One Saturday, we were heading along Piccadilly to a meeting point for a tour.
As we were early, we decided to have a look at the Burlington Arcade. After strolling through the arcade we then took a look at Burlington House located nearby. This gracious building is home to the Royal Academy of Arts. Because we were already heading for a tour, we did not have the opportunity to visit the academy's exhibition. However, we did have time to pop into the Annenberg Courtyard to take a quick look. This was an elegant and quiet courtyard, serviced by a coffee shop.
We managed to take a few photos of this beautiful old building but all too soon, it was time to move on.
Well worth a look if you happen to be in the area!

Even though it is in a prime position in the courtyard of Burlington House the prices are extortionate. £2.50 for a small bottle of water for example - wholesale price around 30p. Coffee good but expensive.

This is a building on Piccadilly originally a private Palladian mansion. The courtyard of Burlington House known as "Annenburg Courtyard" is open to the public during the day. It features a statue of Joshua Reynolds and fountains arranged in the pattern of the planets at the time of his birth. The Royal Society of the Arts hold regular exhibitions which are open to the public. Entrance is not free. The rest of the building are occupied by learned societies and are not open to the public.
