A wonderful afternoon out .

Although not the biggest fan of Williamson Square I must say that my last visit here was awesome, a lovely Spring afternoon, the sun shining, we visited the Greggs were my twin brother Stephen and I enjoyed a pie and sausage rolls, we then visited Sweeney's Bar, Shiraz Bar and The Shakespeare Pub were we sat outside and had two beers each in each establishment, we then visited Berlin Doner for a burger on the go while we headed to Bold Street, all in all we had a super afternoon on Williamson Square and when I am in town again on the 19th of May will most definitely visit this square again.

Looked cool .

Before the 3rd national lockdown descended my twin brother Stephen and I decided to jump the train down from Kirkby to Liverpool City Centre and visit some of the great pubs our city is justifiably famous for, while heading to The Fallwell Pub we passed through Williamson Square and I must say it looked really cool ,all decked out for Christmas.
There was a beautiful Christmas tree structure that looked amazing, the views of the Playhouse Theatre looked super especially with the magnificent St John's Beacon as a stunning backdrop, very photogenic, made for some great photographic opportunities, with coronavirus pandemic restrictions this area was more quiet than usual but with the rollout of the vaccines hopefully we will get back to normality in the new year, I think we will soon especially as 15 million jabs have been given out and we're only in mid February and area's such as Williamson Square will be buzzing again.

The UK entered its second lockdown which lasts until the 2nd of December so all pubs, bars and restaurants plus none essential shops are closed ,visited Williamson Square in the tier three restrictions phase ,had a meal and cider in The Shakespeare Pub, atmosphere was subdued in all honesty the Square was fairly quiet, I think this square could be so much better ,actually thought with the outside seating adopted by the pubs in Williamson Square that the atmosphere would be more continental but alas the square is as it always seems to be which is boring ,an area people tend to pass through.

Take advantage of the situation.

Williamson Square is a square in Liverpool that with a bit of imagination could be a must go destination.
Home to the Playhouse Theatre ,the square had some good pubs on and some fast food outlets ,a dodgy water fountain that never seems to work but with the reopening of pubs and bars in England as some of the coronavirus lockdown restrictions are lifted there is a definite chance this square could flourish ,social distance is key to the survival of the leasure industry and this square is perfect ,outside seating would ensure lots of people could descend on this square ,if the weather ever relents from raining I could see this square thriving ,let's hope the council and pub and bar owners see the potential, time will tell.

Not very inviting.

In a square that dates back to 1745 ,Williamson Square which is home to the magnificent Liverpool Playhouse should be one of Liverpool's must go destinations but in reality its square with a rather lame fountain that occasionally works, some very tatty retail and fast food outlets and a smattering of a few pubs, pubs are quite good but the square itself is a let down ,1000's of people pass through this square every day but there's nothing of real interest to keep you here,if the city council would open their eyes to the potential of the square the city would reap the rewards, with the Liverpool Playhouse as the centrepiece and surrounded on all sides with pubs, bars and restaurants offering outside seating this square could rival any in the UK,its takes a bit of imagination and a bit of funding but I fear it will remain as it is which to me is basically an eye sore,a missed opportunity.

The Xmas Tree has made it a destination
Dec 2019
Williamson Square ...... normally a depressing place is at least brightened up for the season with its multi light changing effect "walk through" Christmas tree. So wait till the light goes and pop along. There was a Cadburys Chocky Hut there yesterday ..... but it may have moved on!

Williamson Square in the heart of the city centre is in my opinion a missed opportunity to exploit a great area of Liverpool.
The square is home to a few pubs and bars ,a few fast food joints and a couple of shopping outlets, the centrepiece is the stunning Playhouse with the radio tower as a magnificent backdrop, its also home to a very dodgy and cheap looking fountain and that's about it really, its tired looking and uninviting which is a shame as the amount of people who pass through the square is awesome, my twin brother Stephen and I were heading to The Richmond Pub and passed through the square, granted the square had some great Christmas decorations up including an illuminated wigwam but its papering over the cracks ,the square needs urgent investment, it needs some good restaurants and pubs here some high end retail outlets, basically the council to pay some interest in Williamson Square.

City Center

This is located on the city center and you will probably cross the square on your way somewhere else. I am sure is full of history, however, I didn't see any sign with info.

As with quite as few places in the city centre like Clayton Square and The Metquarter, Williamson Sq is underused and is mainly used a thoroughfare to get the train/bus/somewhere else.

One of the few redeeming features is the Italian Deli on the corner but aside from that it's your standard British high street fare of betting shops, old man pubs, Poundland and takeaways ie nothing worth sticking around for.

As a few people have mentioned there are fountains here but they work sporadically and were the centrepiece about 15 years ago but now they serve to add to the depressing nature of Williamson Square.

This place could be great if Liverpool City Council stopped focusing on Church St and Liverpool One. It just needs a bit of investment. I'd love to see more independent business in the area and less chains.

Matalan Store, Williamson Square, Liverpool
Aug 2019
I visited the above store and the standard of customer service was appalling.
I was served by an employee who did not engage with me me in any way and continued to talk to her colleague throughout the transaction. No please, no thank you just exceedingly rude. I will not shop at that store ever again.
