Before the 3rd national lockdown descended my twin brother Stephen and I decided to jump the train down from Kirkby to Liverpool City Centre and visit some of the great pubs our city is justifiably famous for, while heading to The Fallwell Pub we passed through Williamson Square and I must say it looked really cool ,all decked out for Christmas.
There was a beautiful Christmas tree structure that looked amazing, the views of the Playhouse Theatre looked super especially with the magnificent St John's Beacon as a stunning backdrop, very photogenic, made for some great photographic opportunities, with coronavirus pandemic restrictions this area was more quiet than usual but with the rollout of the vaccines hopefully we will get back to normality in the new year, I think we will soon especially as 15 million jabs have been given out and we're only in mid February and area's such as Williamson Square will be buzzing again.

This square could be such an amazing hub for the city but sadly it has been allowed to become decayed with drab shops and bars on it. There is a fountain I've never seen working, the seating is lacklustre and there is almost always nothing going on here. It is a complete waste of a potentially fantastic city square. The square is very reminiscent of the ones in Europe, most of which are packed full of independent bars and cafes...with street vendors and artists of all sorts performing...but not here. The only people you see hanging around here are gangs of youths on what appear to be bag snatching missions. Sad....very sad....as I don't think it would cost much money to sort this square out.
So no doubt on your visit you will simply pass through this square as it joins so many different parts of the city....and that is the best thing to do...just carry on walking (and keep an eye on your valuables).

A square were 1000's of people walk through every single day is in my opinion one of the most sad and underused squares in Liverpool.
Home to the beautiful Liverpool Playhouse Theatre ,this square should be home to some great restaurants, cafes and bars and a great water feature but sadly the water feature never seems to be working, cafes, bars and restaurants are decidedly second rate ,its just not an attractive square and Liverpool City Council must be held to blame ,proper planning ,funding and s bit of imagination could turn this square around, make it a must go area ,let's hope so in the future but as it stands in a very poor square.

I visited the above store and the standard of customer service was appalling.
I was served by an employee who did not engage with me me in any way and continued to talk to her colleague throughout the transaction. No please, no thank you just exceedingly rude. I will not shop at that store ever again.

Williamson Square is a square that everyday of the year 1000's upon 1000's of people pass through and as such should be a square teeming with pubs, bars and restaurants and some interesting pieces of street art and buildings that reflect how important this square should be but in reality what we have is a square with a beautiful theatre namely The Liverpool Playhouse with the fantastic Radio Tower as a stunning backdrop but that's it .
The square is neglected, what was intended as a modern fountain with 20 water jets and to be illuminated at night never seems to be working and looks cheap and nasty, there's a big Matalan shop and the Liverpool Football Club Shop and some pubs and bars and the ubiquitous chain of bookmaker outlets but everything about this square looks cheap which is sad for a historically important square that was first laid out in 1745.
I travel extensively throughout Europe and visit many squares that are hives of activity, great places to visit ,they take advantage of the great architecture and surround these buildings with amazing restaurants and cafes and bars, they make the squares must go destinations ,it would be nice to think that maybe someone on Liverpool City Council would have the mindset to make this depressing square in Liverpool a must go destination instead of a place you pass through without giving it a second look.

Williamson Square is a little city centre square that is ok but it could be so much better.
With the Play house Theatre and the Radio City Tower as a stunning backdrop this square should have some great restaurants and cafes flanking the square and maybe a monument of some description as it's centrepiece but in realty you have some so so bars and none descript shopping outlets and a rather pathetic water feature, not much really and certainly nothing of any real interest .
If your in this part of Liverpool you will probably walk through it without noticing it ,it's that none descript.

Williamson Square is were you will find The Playhouse Theatre but in my opinion is a wasted opportunity to create a must go to area.
There are a couple of half decent pubs and bars here but nothing worth going out your way for.
The fountains on our visit were not working this despite it being Liverpool's hottest day of the year.
The theatre needs a lick of paint and the whole square is really nothing special.
With the theatre and the stunning backdrop of the radio tower it could be so much more.
A nice restaurant and a few good café's and bars and an improved fountain would make this a must go area.
Let's hope in the future the powers in charge will sanction some positive changes.

Williamson Square is still popular, although the main shopping area has now moved to Liverpool ONE, a few hundred yards down the road. There are plenty of seats, where you can sit and watch the world go by, shops, fountains and the famous Playhouse Theatre building.

Noticed when walking through Williamson Square recently that it's slightly more busy ,a new pub has opened up and it's a bit more bustling ,it should be a really good square to visit ,the theatre and St Johns Beacon as stunning backdrops ,a fountain that unfortunately never seems to be working ,it's a square that promises so much and delivers so little .

My twin brother Stephen and I were pub hopping around Williamson Square and I must say it looked cool.
Great Christmas illuminations ,very pretty especially with St Johns Beacon and the theatre building as a stunning backdrop, made for some great photographic opportunities ,not normally a fan of this square but I must say over the Christmas period it looked superb.
