I was told I'm a once a year drinker by staff
Dec 2018
Myself and my friends all grew up in Waterloo or Crosby. Now in our 40s, some of us have stayed local whilst others, such as myself, have scattered across the country. Every year we all make a point of meeting up in the Lion and Unicorn before we head for a Chinese/Indian and a catch up. We've been doing this for well over 20 years. Every year without fail, from all of the pubs in the area to choose from, we would descend on the Lion and Unicorn, down 5 or 6 pints each, then head for a meal. Typically, our party is anywhere between 8-12 strong, so that is a lot of ale being supped. So there I was with my mate, in the Lion and Unicorn, waiting to be served. But we were not served. The locals came and went, all getting served before us. This went on for some time. When I finally flagged this to the barmaid, I was given a harsh response, and we were all called 'once a year drinkers'. Shocking. We all left shortly afterwards. Here, I'd like to add the following. This incident happened last year. We were all back for our annual gathering last Saturday. Did we meet in the Lion? No we never. I know of others who also do not go in there now, all thanks to that rude barmaid. Have a word with yourself, teach yourself some manners, and perhaps consider that the only reason we only drink in there once a year is that some of us live 100+ miles away, and one the one night of the year we do drink in Waterloo, the Lion is, or was, the pub we chose.

If your a red and you like telly football, this is the place.

There’s loads of tv’s and the atmosphere on a big match day is excellent.

Beer’s cheap and is near South Rd so getting something eat after is not a problem.

I’m not a local but always go in when I’m up visiting family.

The Lion & Unicorn Pub is a superb pub that on any visit down to South Road we always drop in for a quick pint as your always made so welcomed in this pub .
The pub itself is superb,it's a proper big pub,the main drinking area is spacious with great decor and furnishings including a cool serving bar and there's a side room which has a couple of pool tables ,there's TV's to enjoy the sport and plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub,it's a good olds fashioned back street pub.
My twin brother Stephen and I were here on a Wednesday afternoon and the pub was fairly quiet,we decided to get a pint of Fosters lager each, these were served in tip top condition being iced cold and sparkling and we just chilled out and took in the great pub we were in.
Our lager was really good,I am more a craft beer and real ale fan but occasionally I enjoy a light and unpretentious beer and this certainly hit the spot.
We really enjoyed our beers in here before we moved on and as on every other visit to here we had a great time.
The Lion & Unicorn Pub is really easy to locate ,we jumped the train down to Waterloo Train Station and walked a bit down South Road and cut onto Church Road were you will find this pub.
Opening hours are;
Monday to Thursday,11am till 11pm.
Friday & Saturday,11am till Midnight.
Sunday,Midday till 11pm.
A great pub and one I highly recommend you visit if your in the area.

This pub has been my local for a many a year and I loved going there especially when they had a darts team on a Thursday night.
But now they have a quiz night on Thursday and because of it I have witnessed customers leaving in droves many long time customers and good drinkers,
The reason is because the quiz master has every TV tuned for the quiz and the sound full volume I am surprised the owners of this pub have not seen the drop in sales, customers return to the venue when the quiz has ended it needs to go.
Pippy,
Waterloo.

In the past I have been a very good customer of the lion and unicorn, unfortunately Customer service from some of the bar staff leaves a lot to be desired Otherwise is quite sociable Also I have noticed when visiting other green king Pubs such as the Birkey in Crosby they put complimentary food on for events such as match days and quiz nights not sure why You don't get the same in the lion and unicorn??

This is a smallish local pub with tidy decor and a friendly atmosphere. A great place to watch a live broadcast football match, particularly if you are swayed toward LFC. Or if you like a game of pool, they have 2 pool tables in the bar area and a dart board. If however, none of the above takes your fancy, it is a great establishment to partake in a nice quiet drink, whether in a group, couple or even alone as the clientele are very friendly indeed. Only downside is they don't serve food, but the location abuts South Road, which itself is another matter in-re an abundance of food and drinking establishment's.

We were on the SOUTH ROAD,doing a nice little pub crawl and this pub is alway's at the top of our list of pub's to go to.
Walked in and this pub was bouncing,we ordered GREENE KING I.P.A.and this beer was on tip top condition.
Love the layout of this pub, lot's of good seating, nice decor and great for watching the sport on tv.
They have a good selection of beer's and the staff are really nice.
This pub can get seriously busy, especially at the weekend's,even when we were there on a Thursday late afternoon the pub was still very full.
This is a great pub in a fantastic area ,the South Road is well known for it's nightlife, lot's of pub's ,bar's and restaurant's.
Easy to locate, jump the train down to WATRLOO TRAIN STATION,walk down SOUTH ROAD and cut onto CHURCH STREET were you cannot miss this very traditional pub.
Great pub and well worth a visit.
