- john SAtlanta, Georgia4 contributionsGreat visits, need more time!Really enjoyed the visits to John & Paul’s houses. The guides were very well informed and organized, with some very interesting anecdotes. However- we were rushed out of Lennon home in particular as the next tour arrived. Another 10 minutes would have made a difference. Still recommend going, just be prepared to be pushed for time.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 9, 2023
- LincsHappytravellerSaxilby, United Kingdom101 contributionsQuite a middle class home for a BeatleWhilst we're not big Beatles fans we found our trip to John's house absolutely fascinating. Our guide Andy was very informative and put across information in a friendly, informative way. The house is surprisingly large for a 'working class lad' but it was a squeeze at times when all 15 of us were in the same room. We were also allowed to wander round the house on our own. There have been comments made that not enough time is given to see the house. How long is needed? It's a semi detached house with a tiny kitchen, sun room, best room and some bedrooms? It's not Chatsworth. I thought we had plenty of time to take everything in especially as Andy was so informative. Visitors to the house can only get inside by booking with the National Trust and going by mini bus from a couple of pick up points. It's not possible just to turn up and hope to get in.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 31, 2024
- Laluce6Howard, Ohio37 contributionsMore memories createdFirst off, the bus driver Brendan should be awarded the National Trust employee of the year. He went above and beyond to make sure our visit was legendary. Mendips was being restored but our tour was nevertheless memorable. Our guide at the house offered to let us sing on the enclosed porch where John often sang because the echo made his voice sound better. We spontaneously sang "Love, love me do, you know I love you." It was not only an appropriate way to end our 50th anniversary trip, but we were reminded of the time when we were dating and sitting on the floor listening to the Beatles on a reel to reel.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 16, 2024

We toured Mendips - the childhood home of John Lennon with the National Trust twice during our visit to Liverpool. Once as part of the Fab 4 Taxi Tour and once on our own with our own booking.
The house is really a step back in time to see where John spent most of his formative years growing up in the care of his Aunt Mimi Smith. Words can't describe how it feels to see the living room where he would lay on the floor and draw or the kitchen where he would have tea with Mimi.
Most touching is John's bedroom on the second floor. You can completely picture the young John listening to the radio there and playing guitar.
You are not allowed to take photos or videos in the home but there is a guide book that you can buy in advance from the National Trust that has plenty of photos. The guide at the home is very knowledgeable about the home and it's history and can answer any question you may have about the place.
Be sure to stop off in the enclosed front porch and sing a bit to hear the echo just like John, Paul and George did back in the day!

Excellent place to visit and to get the opportunity to actually go inside is something very special. Our guide Colin was exceptional with little personal stories and answered all questions so well. Being National Trust members means a reduced price to pay which is also great. I’d highly recommend this tour to any Beatles fan!!!!!

We travelled to John Lennon and Paul McCartney's homes with the National Trust from Speke Hall.
John Lennon's former home at his Aunt Mimi's is still relatively unaltered, but nevertheless great care has been taken to make it seem as authentic as possible re Yoko's requirements.
There's an interesting porch area where some of John's earlier offerings were practiced due to the echo chamber acoustics.
It was a bit like travelling back in time and being surrounded by ghosts.
A nice snapshot in time.
Likewise, Paul McCartney's former home is also very interesting.
It seems it took rather more effort to return it to its heyday for e.g. The windows were modern, so the National Trust searched for vintage ones, only to find some in a house in a nearby street, which they promptly purchased and replaced.
Likewise they apparantly searched for a Belfast sink for the kitchen, only to find it in the back garden!
This house is authenticated with some of Mike McGear's earlier photographs of Paul, looking through windows and climbing up the back drainpipe etc.
Joe our driver was very nice, friendly and informative.
Both hosts were also very helpful, both giving many useful snippets of information regarding the formative years of John and Paul's lives and the ways in which their families and homes influenced their lives and music.
Both houses are well worth a visit.

Great experience good guides. We visited both Lennon and McCartney ' s childhood homes in Liverpool. It's a deal offered to National Trust members and it's really worthwhile. You have to book in advance though. We ( my wife and I ) loved the whole experience and enjoyed the history and insights into their childhood upbringings. I think some assumptions you may have had will be dispelled and the warmth and Clannish -ness of the McCartneys be very publicly displayed.
There's a poignancy in both their lives and whether some of this was manifested through songwriting and musicianship will be explored at times.
One of the best National Trust visits we've ever enjoyed and wonderfully of the now and part of popular culture. Thoroughly recommend and all the guides , drivers etc just added to the splendour of it all. One of the guides eerily could ' do ' their accents almost to a ' t '..........

Came here by minibus on the National Trust tour. I’m not a massive Beatles fan but it is an interesting part of our cultural heritage. Also interesting to see a house from the same era in which I was a child. 16 people on each tour means it is a crush for everyone to get into the same room so that they can hear what the guide is saying. 12-14 would have been a more appropriate number. At the beginning the guide spoke to us outside the house but in a very quiet voice so as not to disturb the neighbours. As a result I could not hear much of what he said until the tour went inside.

The trip to see both John Lennon and Paul McCartneys childhood homes was an amazing experience. We booked online with the National Trust. The 2 guides who showed us around the two respective homes (we visited on 9th June 2022) had extensive knowledge of the early lives of John and Paul and how that related to the Beatles homes, lives and music. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip and cant recommend it enough to anyone with any level of interest in The Beatles.

Great to look back at Lennon's auntie's house where he satyed for many years in the late 40s and 50s when growing up. Not so much of the original things but national Trust has done a fine job sourcing suitable furniture for the period.
Good guides bring the story to life, fascinating and lovely cmparison to McCartney'schildhood house.
You MUST pre-book via National Trust if you want to look inside.

This is an excellent idea as an attraction and the content has clearly been researched meticulously. The guides and driver were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, too. I’ve withheld a fifth star because it needs a bit of rethinking. There were too many people in the group being taken round, making it quite difficult to see some artefacts. Also, more time needs to be allocated, particularly at Forthlin Rd, where we felt rather rushed. If these points can be addressed, this will be a top attraction.

Great tour. Amazing to be in the houses where John and Paul grew up and wrote lots of the early Beatles songs. Only ÂŁ9 for trip to both houses by minibus from Speke hall. A look around Speke hall is included even if you are not NT members.
Guides at both houses and our driver were all really enthusiastic, friendly, and informative. Will do again!

This is a weird question but for those who have been there, is John's room on the top floor or bottom? Is it next to Mimi's?
Written November 15, 2019
It was definitely upstairs. I am not 100% sure if it was right next to Mimi’s but it is not that big of a floor to begin with.

Which other tour companies can you buy tickets from? We are going on a last minute trip and National Trust is sold out. Only in Liverpool Friday 11 Oct and Saturday 12 Oct.
Written October 9, 2019
You have to be in a tour as they do groups. You can do Mendips, McCartney house ,casbah club inside with a black cab or Fab 4 private tour. Contact them through website . We got ours 7 days in advance. They drop you off and you go with national trust into those buildings. But be prepared to pay around $400 to $600 depending on your custom tour.
Written December 12, 2019
Hi, can you get a bus/ make your own way there and just look at the outside? Not too fussed about seeing the inside as most tours are sold out when we have booked to go but was just wondering if we could just make our own way. thanks

We were taken by our coach to see this house but only stopped outside for a quick look and the guide to let us know about it.

Saludos!

How do I get inexpensive tickets for John Lennon's home tour. I am going in mid November. Thanks for your hlep
Written October 26, 2015
To visit inside the homes of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, you have to go through the National Trust and you need to boom in advance as the numbers allowed in are limited. The cost is approximately ÂŁ24.00
There is something called the Fab Four Taxi Company which will take you on a two hour tour of all the Beatles homes, Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane and the graveyard of Eleanor Rigby and is full on interesting fact, stories and is fascinating and will cost approx ÂŁ44. Well worth it and they pick you up from your hotel.
Finally there is the Magical Mystery Tour which you pick up from the Albert Docks and whilst this is slightly cheaper than the Taxi Tour, you drive past all their haunts but you cannot get off the bus or take photos etc in the same way as the Taxi.
A lovely place, easy to walk and navigate and check out the museums

Does it matter that this house, and Paul McCartney's, are essentially reproductions, or maybe stage sets for visitors? Is the satisfaction all in your mind? What about authenticity?
Written October 23, 2015
The fact that the original, actual furniture isn't still there did not lessen the impact of being inside the homes where John and Paul grew up and collaborated with one another. Just sitting in Paul's living room in the same spot where he and John composed so many songs was thrilling. And singing out loud in John's little hallway, where Mimi made them go (plus the acoustics were good), was so exciting. A true fan would be satisfied enough to know she or he walked on the same ground and stepped on the same stairs and into the bedrooms of those two. I'm very very happy that I made the National Trust Tour a part of my Liverpool pilgrimage. Sure it would have been even better if the original furnishings were still there, but you can't have everything.
