A colourful architectural arch and gateway that’s highly ornate and embellished leads into a distinctive district. Replete with eateries and colourful flourishes, it was rewarding a visit.

Had assumed that the grand gateway was quite old so somewhat surprising that it was completed and unveiled only during the Chinese New Year of 2000.

Interesting to learn that it’s the area with the longest lasting Chinese residency in Europe. Everything about it is characteristically Chinese, decorative doorways, businesses and restaurants.

Went to see the celebration to mark the Chinese New Year, there were parades, dragons, stalls and food. The atmosphere was great despite the wind and rain. It did not put people off, there were large crowds clearly enjoying themselves. We really enjoyed it. Fab.

We have visited today around 3pm. There was nothing open and just looked like a rundown town. Granted the gate and statutes were lovely but don't bother making a special trip. Other tourists shared our disappointment. Just metal shutters on buildings and not a lot going on

Walking back to the Ferry, took a walk through Liverpool's Chinatown.
Sadly, not a lot to see - apart from the arch.
Very few restaurants open during the day - i counted 2!
Compared to Manchester nearby which is excellent, Liverpool has very little going for it.

Was looking forward to exploring Liverpool's Chinatown expecting there to be plenty of authentic restaurants and shops. Unfortunately couldn't be further from the truth. There is literally nothing there, the few restaurants looked run down or closed, and only one Chinese shop seemed to exist. It is still worth a visit to see the wonderful arch donated from Shanghai which makes a great photo opportunity. It is such a shame that the local population have not made more of the area. It would be great if there was a small museum dedicated to telling the history of the Chinese and what they brought to Liverpool and how they served in the war etc. (this information is shown in the Museum of Liverpool but could be made so much more of in Chinatown).

I am a massive fan of China Town in London and was excited to discover one in Liverpool. To my disappointment I was welcomed by rude staff and derogatory language. Arriving at the first restaurant,we were told we had to wait 15min for a table, which is fine, then we said we will pop down the road and on walking out, the staff member shouted, "fu*k off". I was beyond shocked and continued walking. Following down the road, the third place we popped in to tried to charge us 10% service charge for our order. It says notching about this on the menu (other than if you use a karaoke room- which we were not in). She rudely said, well I'm telling you now you will have a 10% charge. However, locals next to us said they don't pay this service charge. Ridiculous. So we left yet again. I honestly would not recommend China Town in Liverpool. So disappointed.

London's Chinatown is world-famous and worth a visit with wonderful restaurants and lively streets. Liverpools version is a rundown slum street or two on the edge of the city which is also pretty scruffy. Not even worth a detour - if you read Michelin!

We were in town on a real ale pub tour and had been to several pub's on Dale Street and decided to head over to this area of the city,we had been to THE YARDBIRD BAR ( Berry Street ) and THE GRAPES PUB ( Roscoe Street ) when we decided to have a look into Chinatowm.
In our early year's of going to Liverpool for a night out we alway's ended up here, usually in WONG'S ,it was part of our night out.
Going there now it has changed a little ,the arch is still breathtaking, nice restaurant's but not as many ,shop's more aimed at the tourist but it is still nice to go for an hour or so
As we were here we popped into CHILLI CHILLI for a meal, superb service ,great meal and great price.
I think this is one of the oldest Chinatown's in Europe, and it is still well worth visiting.
If your visiting Liverpool i would most certainly put it on the "to go" list.

Chinese Arch is really worth visiting, but the street is empty and seems like is abandoned. Expected more.
