About
Sudley House has been described as a hidden gem. Tucked away in Liverpool's leafy suburbs, Sudley is the only house of a Victorian merchant that still has its original pictures, including works by Millais, Turner and Rossetti. With beautiful period furniture, carpets and wallpaper it doesn't feel like a regular gallery, more a period home that you've been given the keys to. Admission is free, booking essential at www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/sudleyhouse

An interesting place
Dec 2020
Sudley House was a wealthy family's home in the late 19th century. The art they collected is displayed as it was back then. It's a bit out of the city centre but good for a trip back in time.

Hidden gem!

What a find! Rather out of the way, but definitely make the effort to go. A beautiful art collection displayed as it was when Sudley House was the owner's home. Very friendly and highly-knowledgeable staff. Lovely tea shop. Currently showing a fascinating exhibition of etchings. There are really thoughtful little touches that make this place special such as magnifying glasses to study the etchings in detail.

Wonderful hidden gem...
Jan 2020 • Couples
In all the years we've been coming to the great city of Liverpool we had never visited this glorious house and gallery. Sublime paintings, fabulous interiors, and amazing views to the Welsh hills from the rear terrace and gardens. Cannot recommend a visit enough. Staff are absolutely WONDERFUL, knowledgeable and friendly. A great afternoon out.

What a fabulous day we had. This place may be off the main track regarding the tourist trap but it’s glorious. Stunning house full of magnificent artwork by some of our greatest artists, a lovely cafe, and superb friendly and welcoming staff.

Such a beautiful house, inside absolutely stunning; the rooms look just as they would have in the 1800s. Well worth a visit.

Christmas visit
Dec 2019
Great little visit today for the first time to this lovely place. Christmas fun, arts and crafts, carol singing and kids entertainment all free! Breath of fresh air from these types of historical houses being in it for the money!

Cafe visit
Nov 2019 • Friends
I recently visited the cafe at Sudley House and what a lovely place it is !! The decor is very quaint and the food really is delicious. I had a mince pie and a cup of tea . The pie was the best mince pie I have tasted. I really must say the service I received was exceptional . The staff there ( Jackie ) was so very friendly and humorous. She was knowledgeable not only about what was on offer but also about the house itself . We will definitely visit again .

Off the tourist track but well worth taking the trouble to get there.

Although Sudley House is well away from the main tourist areas of Liverpool it really is worth taking the trouble to go. I was very impressed with this place. From a very friendly and helpful man at the reception desk, through a large number of paintings ranging from unknown artists to acknowledged masters and finished off with good coffee served by another friendly guy in the cafe it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
For those who like interactive stuff there are videos of actors playing the roles of the former owner and his family and staff which give a good insight into the background to the collection.
At the time of our visit there was an excellent temporary exhibition of etchings by Whistler, who I'd heard of, and Pennell, who I hadn't. Magnifying glasses are provided and these are essential to see the incredibly fine detail in the artworks.
I learnt a lot about the production of etchings too. Why weren't we taught this at school?
Highly recommended.

Superb Sudley
Aug 2019 • Solo
Nestled within the leafy suburbs of Mossley Hill lies Sudley House, a superb museum, free admission, and well worth a visit. Once the proud home of the Holt family, who had nautical connections with the city, the house has an extensive art collection, including Turner & Rossetti, and has ocassional exhibitions. Open every day 10am till 5pm, it is easy to reach from Liverpool city centre, the most direct being a train from Lime St station to Mossley Hill (28mins). There are also two buses - 80 & 80a which go close by (Rose Lane). There is a small car park on site (with 3 blue badge spaces), but it is limited. After a tour of the house, one can enjoy a hot drink or snack from the on-site cafe. The small gardens at the rear are also a delight, as is the side verrander, especially on a sunny day.
