About
The multi-award winning IBCC opened to the public for the first time in the January 2018. The site includes the one of the UK's tallest War Memorials, the Spire, which stands out on Lincoln's skyline at 31.09m tall, the same height as the wingspan of a Lancaster Bomber. The Spire is surrounded by curved walls which carry the names of 57,871 men and women who gave their lives whilst in the service of Bomber Command during WW2. The Spire is set in 10 acres of landscaped peace gardens, one of which represents Lincolnshire's contribution to the war and one that recognizes the involvement of 62 nations in Bomber Command. The Chadwick Centre provides all our visitor facilities and hosts three exhibition galleries covering our core themes of Recognition, Remembrance and Reconciliation. There is also an education suite and facilities for corporate hospitality. Children's trails and craft sessions available. The site is free to visit but tickets are needed to gain access to the Exhibition.

    A thought provoking experience
For anyone wishing to find out more about the role of Bomber Command and the lives of the people who served with it this centre is the place to go. Visitors will get an insight into the daily lives of the aircrew and how it felt to go on a raid over Germany. For historical balance the story of the effects on German civilians and their cities is also told. The use extensive of technology helps bring the story to life. The setting of the centre is impressive, overlooking the city of Lincoln and its cathedral. The on-site cafe and shop (both free to enter) are well worth a visit. But most impressive of all is the towering monument to the almost 56,000 people from Bomber Command who were killed during WW2 and whose names can be found on the large metal plaques surrounding it.
Dear 193billp Thank you for all your comments and giving the IBCC 5 stars. It is always good to get such positive feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit and you have obviously appreciated what we have tried to achieve at the centre. Best wishes

A fascinating place to remember a terrible time in history
Didn't know this place existed until we visited Lincoln. A perfect setting to remember what happened during WWII not only to the British but also from the German and Allies perspective too. A place for remembrance and reconciliation. Great cafe too.
Dear X8753FU Thank you for writing a review. I'm glad you found us when visiting Lincoln and pleased you enjoyed your time at the IBCC. Best wishes

International bomber command centre, well worth a visit.
Excellent visit and would highly recommend. The free guide around the site was fantastic, very informative and taken by a volunteer guide who was extremely knowledgeable and more than willing to answer any questions you may have. It was also a place that will make you think and appreciate all the sacrifices made by that generation for us today. I would also like to mention how reasonably priced the visit was. A very small entrance fee for parking and an optional exhibition which you would need to pay separately for. The cafe was excellent as well. Lovely food again reasonably priced, and a small but good quality
Dear simonk1111 Thank you for writing a review of your visit. The IBCC relies on donations so the small fee for parking helps towards the upkeep of the peace gardens and memorial spire. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit and were able to take advantage of visiting our hub café for refreshments. Best wishes

    IBCC visit
This is a place steeped in remberance, well laid out. Lot's of great information about the work done during the the Second World War and the sacrifice made by those nations involved. This is our second visit and there was a new exhibition honouring the Dam Busters. Both the grounds and restaurant are dog friendly. So made for an excellent day out.

A fascinating, moving, and important insight into the feats and sacrifice of bomber command.
An important memorial to a vital and previously unfairly unrepresented part of the effort to defeat the evil of Nazism. Make time for the excellent guided tour. The optional exhibition is well worth a visit: It's a very slick and modern AV show along with interesting static exhibits.

    Great informative visit.
Very interesting visit. We chanced upon this while visiting Lincoln. The reception staff were very informative & helpful. We opted for a free guided tour, which was to take place shortly after our arrival. Our guide was very relaxed but knowledgeable & put the information across in a very personable way. He made it easy to understand what happened at Bomber command during the war & the perils that crew members were confronted with. There was a lovely memorial for Barnes Wallis & Commander Guy Gibson commemorating the 'bouncing bomb', 80 yrs ago. The cafe was more of a restaurant, serving snacks and very good hot food. We enjoyed it very much.
Dear Venture19961380737 Thank you for your review of the IBCC. I'm so pleased you enjoyed your visit and found the tour interesting. Our tour guides are very knowledgeable and love to impart their stories. We hope you will visit us again the future. Best wishes

    Wow
This has to be one of the most incredible museums I have visited. From the minute you enter it is just so touching, moving and informative. Excellent displays and interactive pieces. Makes you really think about the brave men and woman. Cafe is fantastic snd the food just beautiful. This will not be our last visit here.

    Educational and deeply moving
IBCC is a complete revelation. It balances memorialisation with telling the story of Bomber Command and its broader context within WW2. The memorial part of the IBCC is outdoors within the beautiful and creatively-designed grounds, whilst the story of BC is within the imaginatively curated galleries of the visitors centre. Whilst all is fair in love and war, that story doesn’t shy away from the ethical arguments surrounding the allied bombing of German cities, and whilst it's up to the visitor to arrive at their own accommodation with this, the facts are sensitively and contextually presented. Above and beyond this, the total bravery of the BC servicemen and women, above ground and on the ground, shines through. It’s all rather humbling. We took advantage of an inspirational guided tour, courtesy of one of the fabulous volunteers, Andrew. We also availed ourselves of the delicious fare in the café. We spent almost five hours at the IBCC (I suggest you need an absolute minimum of two), money well spent and put towards a worthy cause.
Dear DocDavid Thank you so much for your wonderful and detailed review of the IBCC. I'm so pleased you enjoyed your visit. As the centre continues to evolve I hope you will visit us again in the future. Best wishes

"An experience the whole family can learn from"
Recently while on a short holiday to Lincoln we visited the International Bomber Command Centre. It was an experience that the whole family can learn so much from about the great sacrifices made by so many people for the freedom of Britain and the free world. We went on a tour of the centre and our guide was a very friendly Scottish guy. He was excellent as he really went out of his way to make our whole experience very informative and truly memorable. What makes this centre different to so many about the second world war, is it tells the story of the people involved and what they went through. The centre consists of both an indoor complex and outdoor spire/memorial walls plus peace gardens. Firstly the indoor complex consists of two levels, ground level and a top floor above. There are three exhibition galleries with extensive displays. This includes a large screen movie to show footage from the time period and what life was really like both from the pilots and the public point of view during the booming. The spirit of the era and although the suffering and loss of life was very high, how people battled through to keep their freedom. You can also sample what it was like to be a member of the operational/ aircrew with a immersive and interactive experience. If you are trying to trace a family member there is a digital database with full archive. This was especially useful to us as we were trying to trace my wife's uncle who was a aircraft rear gunner and died during a campaign. Here again our tour guide was excellent as he accessed their database and provided us with some really useful info. Secondly the outdoors consists of the memorial spire and walls. The walls have the names of all the personnel who sadly lost their lives. On speaking to our tour guide the one thing that stood out for us was how young the aircraft crew were who died, with the average age been just twenty years old. Once again through the help of our excellent tour guide we actually traced the uncle who lost his life during a campaign. There are also memorial stones to the personnel and their squadrons. The peace gardens are both extensive and interesting with highly unusual statues and a reproduction built bunker showing what the living conditions were like for the public during the blitz. Finally there is a very nice café area where you can have any thing from a cuppa through to a full meal with a wide variety of choice. Likewise although we didn't sample it there is lots for children to do including dressing up, craft activities, etc As I said earlier both the whole experience and our tour guide were excellent. What's especially great is that many of the people doing the tours and support roles are volunteers giving their time and skills for free to help. The centre is not government funded but survives on donations and self sufficiency. So any money you do spend will help to maintain the centre for now and the future. Enjoy yourselves, it's a truly excellent historical experience having won "Visit England" awards for excellence in both 2023 and gold award in 2020.
Dear TedC795 Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed and great review of the IBCC. I am pleased you chose to visit us whilst on holiday and to hear that you were so impressed with the centre, the gardens and the café. Thank you for the shout out for one of our volunteer tour guides - they are all a huge asset to the IBCC. Best wishes

This centre has been out in place so we never forget what happened to the pilots of Bomber Command. It’s an amazing place to visit.
The Hub Cafe there provides some fabulous refreshments, and a wonderful view. We’ve been many times now, and it’s always thought provoking.
Car parking is ÂŁ3 all day.
Free to walk round and use cafe, bug there’s a fee for the exhibition, which is well worth seeing.

We found this place on trip advisor when looking for something to do in the Lincoln area, my friend is very interested in the war so I visited the website and booked and paid on line. Due to Covid you can only pre book but it saves money and you pre pay car parking.

The grounds are beautifully maintained, the reception, shop, cafe are spotlessly clean and operating a one way system. The toilets were spotless and flush and taps are hands free. The shop has lots of quality merchandise and the cafe something for everyone, the “wads” or sandwiches were excellent.

We signed up for a guided tour our guide Andrew was excellent, informative and funny. It’s not only an amazing memorial for the fallen but provides excellent views over Lincoln.

The exhibition was brilliant, interactive and informative we felt it was one of the best exhibitions we’ve been in the UK. It’s worth the money so if you are visiting pay the extra don’t just walk the grounds.

The only thing I will say is they should sign post this place from Lincoln as it’s so worth a visit. We saw no signs till we were yards away and I only found it on trip advisor and we visit the area several times a year and had not heard of it before.

If you are in the area visit it’s worth it.

Dear Caroline Many thanks for that wonderful review. So pleased you finally found us and then enjoyed your day with us. I will pass on your kind words to Andrew, he will be delighted to have been mentioned in dispatches! Signage in the area is strictly controlled and is worked on the basis that most people use SatNav. I would love to be able to have extra signs but unfortunately that is not allowed. I very much hope you visit again next time you are in the area. Best wishes Nicky

We visited the memorial centre today, having a small understanding of the history of bomber command. Both of us found the visit truly emotive and very moving as a result of sacrifice made by so many young bomber command personnel throughout the history of the service. The internal exhibition was informative and very much worth the money paid to see the wealth of facts available in the 24 hr lead up to a bombing operation. Also to support the centre which endeavours to commemorate all those involved. The external tour (our guide being Barry Wallis who is extremely knowledgeable and second to none) was truly emotional seeing the significant number of names on display on the panels around the spire of those personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom.
This centre truly commemorates all those involved not just involved in flying the aircraft but supporting those aircraft and crew on the ground. A great-full thanks to Barry and all the staff at the centre for such a moving visit today. If it’s cold please remember to wrap up warm as the external exhibition is fully open to the elements.

Dear danieluA4317TY Thank you for your glowing review of the International Bomber Command Centre. We are very proud of what we have achieved at the centre in acknowledging the men and women who came together in Bomber Command during WWII. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit, I will pass on your comments to Barry and the staff. Yes, on a cold day wrap up warm however, once inside and having done the internal exhibition a hot cup of tea or coffee in our Hub cafe will soon warm people up. Best wishes

A brilliant place to visit. The excellent guide that took a small group of us round the outside to the memorials provided the context for when we visited the moving displays in the exhibition. The centre is free to visit, except for ÂŁ3 charge to maintain the car park. We paid to visit the exhibition which was well worth it. The staff were very helpful, we phoned and booked a wheelchair which was waiting for us on arrival - everything is very accessible.
But the most unexpected part of the day was the delicious Sunday roast (do book). So glad we decided to eat there. We usually avoid Sunday roasts - usually boring, mass produced affairs, but not this one. Everything was of quality, including separate dishes of cauliflower cheese and fresh veg (mangetout, baby sweet corn, carrots grown on site), all presented as you would expect in a top class restaurant. We sat outside in the sun and thanked our lucky stars we live in peacetime.

There are 58,000 reasons why you should visit this place. 58,000 is the approximate number of people that lost their lives in the service of Bomber Command during WW2. The average age was 23, including about 300 women, and they were all volunteers. The way our nation has treated Bomber Command has been utterly disgraceful and this continues to a large extent today perpetuated by the main stream and predominantly left wing media epitomised by the tax payer funded BBC. Hopefully places like this will redress the balance. It is a very fitting and very moving memorial with wonderful tour guides who make the experience so evocative. Places like this survive on the entrance fee, private grants and donations so I find it incomprehensible that one reviewer actually moaned about the parking fee! I paid the parking fee and the entrance fee and spent money in the cafe and in the shop and made a donation and it was an honour to do so. The last quote on one of the walls says “We were told “write your wills. You won’t be here in six weeks time”! Enough said!

We visited IBCC with my parents, who were on their third visit. The centre looks great and the staff were all friendly. We booked on line which was easy. The tour was brilliant and delivered by a knowledgable, friendly and perfectly pitched guide who answered my questions easily. The cafe was nice and the food was generous and tasty. The exhibits is what let it down a little. What there was were great. The photos and footage are what really brought it to life for me but there wasn’t enough to justify the £8 entrance fee and there must be so much more that could be presented. I hope they expand the exhibits for future visitors to make it better worth the money and expand the knowledge of those visitors.

Dear johnandlizb Wow! I'm very pleased to hear that your parents have come and visited the centre 3 times, it is always good to know that people have enjoyed their experience and want to return. I am sorry that you, yourself, felt a little let down by the Exhibition. We are constantly looking to compile more information and data but it is very much reliant on funding constraints. The IBCC illustrates the memories that we have collected from over 900 interviews with those who served or supported the Command during WW2. Best wishes

This was a very humbling, evocative and enthralling experience that left an indelible memory. We were totally transfixed by the tour guide's ability to transport us back in time to a very poignant period in British history. He displayed a delightful, infectious enthusiasm for the cultural and historical context of Bomber Command. His gentle, humorous and highly knowledgeable delivery was a joy to listen to. The site was superbly presented; however, please ensure that you allow sufficient time to process this exciting experience and enjoy wistful reflection. There are excellent catering facilities on site! To anyone visiting Lincoln, International Bomber Command Centre is not to be missed!

We arrived just as the centre opened and were told about the guided tours that would take place from 10am. We went into the museum to have a look at the exhibit and about 5 to 10 the tour guide came and found us. We joined him and about 7 others for a guided tour to learn more about the role of Bomber Command, the centre, and the memorials.

Neither I or my husband have anyone that served with Bomber Command during WW2, with our families being Navy, Army and Fighter links. We found the name of the uncle of our friend and placed a poppy for him.

We were hungry at the end of our visit but sadly the cafe didn't serve lunch until 12 noon and as we had a 3.5 hour drive home we couldn't justify waiting the 15 minutes or so until they started so we left. Food in the cafe looked good though.

If you haven t visitted before or taken a tour then a visit is a must.
This review deals solely with the cafe.As we walked in a lady at reception said we had to pay 3 pounds for parking, we explained we had only popped in for a quick coffee. There is no reprieve if you pop in to solely use the cafe before you use the cafe it will cost you 3 pounds. We stopped for 20 minutes and will not return.
This is such a shame as the cafe and staff and food are wonderful.
3 pounds for twenty minutes is insane and this policy needs a re think surely? This week we could have popped in at least 4 more times but not now. A shame to lose custom because of draconian parking charges.

As soon as I entered the centre I was greeted by very friendly staff members, who treated me like a long lost friend. They fully explained everything and made sure I was completely happy.
The exhibition itself is very interesting, giving a day in the life of the bomber crews. During the visit there is a number of films to watch/experience. I can imagine children would have a great time here. The whole experience is tastefully done, telling the story from both sides.
The cafe on site does a wide selection of food, was very happy with my ham wad and chips. Again the staff were welcoming and friendly.
The peace garden and memorial was very sombre and tastefully done, the sheer amount of names really brings it home what they went through. I will return during the summer to see the garden in all its glory.
A must see if you are you are interested in bomber command.

Hello Smally916 Wow thank you for so much for your wonderful, descriptive and complementary review of the IBCC. So very glad to hear you were impressed by so much within the grounds and Centre. Our Staff and Volunteers pride themselves on their knowledge, approachability and professionalism, so its always nice to get such a review as yours. The children that come through on the education programmes do enjoy themselves and the message is given at such a level as they can understand without being over awed by it all. Thank you again and we look forward to welcoming you back in the summer when, as you said, the gardens are glorious. Best wishes Beverley smith
