Top comedians, great value. Use it or lose it

I've been going to Just The Tonic nights for over ten years now and it's great to have them in Leicester (used to have to travel to Nottingham). Last night Reginald D Hunter was headlining, who was brilliant and it was good to see that the place was full to appreciate a top comedian. The support is always good at these nights and recent comperes, Stephen Bailey and Robin Morgan do a great job warming up the crowd. One thing that could be improved on is the bar, as some reviews mention. The bar is small and the queues are long, so have a few drinks before hand in one of the many nearby pubs if that bothers you. A few reviewers have criticised the new venue, which is unfair as it's far better than the old one on Granby Street, which was dark, cramped, had poor views and sound in places and was situated above the old Walkabout, whose drinkers would often wander in, confused, having got lost on the way back from the toilets. The new venue, Hansom Hall, became Just The Tonic's Leicester home 2 or 3 years ago, while refurbishment was ongoing, and the venue is now absolutely stunning (just look up once you're seated). Seating is comfortable, you get plenty of leg room, a good view of the stage wherever you're sat and you can hear every word. I guess criticism comes from people whose only experience of comedy is watching Live at the Apollo on the TV or arena venues where you pay £50 a ticket. My only real gripe is when people pop out during the show to use the bar or toilet as the door slams behind them. This gets pretty distracting when it's happening every two minutes. Get somebody stood by the door to keep the noise down!

Unhelpful customer support

Tried booking via the website and ended up emailing regarding further information for a booking. Wish I didn’t bother to be honest took far too many emails to answer a couple of simple question. Wouldn’t bother trying again.

This is someone that booked using a 3rd party voucher which had simple instructions on. The constant emails are because they refuse to actually read what is required. I’d say this review is not relevant to anything to do with our conedy nights. We run very good nights and have a lot of happy customers.

We had a group of 11 at £10 per person ( very reasonable). Venue was some sort of learning centre and not the easiest to find we walked right passed it ! I asked the man in the door if it was the comedy club ! Inside looks like a library with a small bar at one side ! Served fairly quickly but at intervals there is a long queue. The was 3 acts on about 30 minutes each all very good.. also very adult ! The compere or host was a lady very good warmed crowd up, I really enjoyed my night very good value for money! Hope to go again before Xmas

The bar is shambles!!!
Feb 2017
Bar opened after we had been called to our show! When we arrived non of the tills were put together and staff had no idea what to do. No signs of leadership! I wouldn't recommend this place! It is not run as a business. Main 'cafe' bit poorly decorated.

Oh dear... On this night we had a lot of trouble with the tills on the bar. This is why we could not open the bar. Things do happen. This was a night within a very busy festival period. No mention of the comedy or anything. I wonder if they laughed at all

Really great comedy night in Leicester
Jul 2016 • Couples
This review was for the Just the Tonic show with Lee Evans at Hansom Hall in Leicester, which is a bit of an odd location as it's inside a library, but the show itself was great, all 3 comedians had us all in stitches!

The hall itself was quite nice, it is quite small so it felt like an intimate venue - the only problem was there was no AC and it was a really hot night so it was very stuffy inside - they could have had some fans or something to keep it a bit cooler. There was a bar to buy drinks, which were quite reasonably priced, and the tickets for the event were £15 which was really good value and worth every £. Would definitely go again!

Took the wife for a Saturday night out. What a mistake. ( JTT not the wife )
New venue is horrible...it's basically some chairs in a room that reminded me of being at school ( imagine plastic chairs...curtains over the glass panels of the doors...terrible tacky stage )
Think my sons nativity 10 year ago had a better set up.
Internet said food served. Technically true.
"Snickers" or "crisps" I was offered. So epic fail on that one.
Wife had warm white wine in a plastic cup for £5 from the bar that again had a strange resemblance to my school tuck shop.
Necked our drinks and left. Total waste of £20
If you fancy warm wine & school chic this place is for you.
Personally I think my wife deserves more.
Went for a steak at Fernandez instead

Awful location but great line-up
Nov 2015 • Friends
We have been going to Just the Tonic for some time now and we have always had a good night but the new location has really let it down. It is now held in an old Methodist church hall now an adult education centre! You go in dressed up for a night out but what you get is a school concert. The bar is badly stocked, limited drinks at high prices all served warm. The main room looks chucked together with tatty fabric draped around a make shift stage. It was freezing in there so kept our coat on all night! What was entertaining was watching people walk into the main room and the disappointing look appear on their faces as they realise where they are. (At least we all felt the same way)

The saving grace of our evening was the fantastic line up. The compere was excellent and We were surprised by the appearance of a celebrity comedian, Jon Richardson followed by another cracking northern fella. Sadly our last headline act ian cognito?? was terrible, which meant the night ended with the same disappointed feeling as it started.

I'm afraid we will never be returning to just the tonic as the location just spoils the evening. Never mind!

Oh dear.... What a complaint from a night when 'Jon Richardson' made a guest appearance. Some times I wonder why we bother!

Great new location
Oct 2015 • Couples
Just the Tonic Leicester recently closed and then re-opened in Hansom Hall. We'd visited the old venue on Granby Street and remembered it being well packed in but had got seats and had a great evening. Having read the reviews of the old venue on here I was a little worried- being pregnant it was really important to me that I got a seat and reviews seemed to imply this was not always the case. Because of this we arrived about an hour before the show was due to start. We needn't have worried- the new venue is a much more flexible space with plenty of room for extra seating if needed. It also felt a lot cleaner and more spacious than the old venue. At 7pm there was only a handful of people there, but by 8pm almost all seats were taken. Seats were arranged in a theatre style, in rows all facing the front.
The bar served the usual bottled drinks and snacks at slightly higher than average prices. No other food on offer but lots of bars and restaurants around the area if someone wanted to eat out. The comedians were great- we'd bought tickets to see the headliner in particular but all support comedians went down well too.
We had a great evening and hope to go back soon!

Very poor night, the comedy was below average and the organisation and management was extremely poor. This used to be a brilliant club with a great atmosphere, it's now a tired looking shambles. We couldn't see, we weren't given seats and the doorman was useless in helping the situation. This club is no Headliners in London. I wouldn't go back and I would advise you all to stay away, especially during the Leicester Comedy festival when so many other locations host great events.

Paid for seated tickets and stood for over 2 hours
Feb 2014
Arrived 20 mins early for show and bar was so busy and understaffed that by the time we got our drinks there was no where to sit. We asked if there was any seats available but was told to stand at the bar. It was over a 2 hour performance and for someone who is waiting for hip surgery this left me very uncomfortable it ruined my evening.
