There’s nothing here, we wandered through yesterday and it’s empty. Shame really, nothing else can be said.

A newly built shopping district linking Sainsbury's to the town centre and still half empty after ten years.
Built in the traditional style of individual shops and streets. But for some reason the existing shops have stayed in their decaying properties instead of moving here.

Although this shopping area isn’t particularly notable, I must say that it isn’t as bad as some reviews might suggest, and my preconceptions of tumbleweed and graffiti were unfounded.
My positivity is no doubt due to the fact that I viewed New Squares as a part of the town centre in general, which is rather attractive. Indeed, I now feel almost guilty at the countless times I’ve simply driven past Penrith on my journeys between North Yorkshire and Scotland without ever having a look at the town.
So, if you’ve never been to Penrith, let me advise that it is a good looking and interesting town.

I am writing this review so that visitors to Penrith will not visit and be misled by the description of New Squares on Trip Advisor.
Three years on and sadly most of the retail units in New Squares are still empty. The Eden Coffee lounge has closed, which was terribly sad for the owners. The only big retailer in there is Sports Direct, although there are a travel agent & small gift shop close to the entrance gate. The other units are empty. The old center of Penrith continues to be busy and bustling as ever; well worth a visit and a mooch.

Counted 12 empty shop units. How embarrassing. Shopped in Sainsbury's and there were more staff than customers. Walked around the old town which had much more life and atmosphere.

new squares itself is a little disappointing but we found Penrith "the town" has much to offer the tourist with its many small side streets full of quirky shops and cafes . although the bus station is rather run down the actual bus service is good.

Whoever owns this is being very bullish I reckon. Why leave it empty at best fill it with start ups and small companies who need a leg up.....but do something to attract people in here.

Wandered in, wandered out again. Bit like a ghost town, shame, really. Will no doubt be nice if and when all or at least more of the units are let.

We were staying at the Premier Inn round the corner, and decided to come here for breakfast.. and we’re so pleased we did! Yummy full English, great portion size and good value for money! Definitely worth a visit!
