Hutton in the Forest is well worth a visit, the house is very interesting and is by guided tour only. The guides are very informative and friendly. The gardens are absolutely beautiful and at the moment are a riot of colour. As soon as you walk into the walled garden the scent of the roses envelops you. There are walks... More

We visited this lovely house with a group of friends. The house is very interesting and well worth a visit, however the highlight for me was a tour around the stunningly beautiful gardens with the Head Gardener. The scent of the many, many roses hit your nostrils before you even enter the walled garden, and when you go in, what... More

The house wasn't open, it was Monday when we visited, but the main attraction for us was the gardens, but having seen the exterior of the houses, we vowed to go back another time to see inside it. Although a grand house, it looks so inviting. What a beautiful place. The setting is fabulous, the gardens are full of beautiful flowers,... More

We went on a tour of the house with a guide called Tony, who was excellent. He was knowledgeable, interesting and approachable. It is a magnificent house and not overly crowded. The grounds are lovely with the best topiary I have ever seen. The café provides lovely snacks and drinks. Well worth a visit

Lovely afternoon in the grounds and gardens of Hutton. A brief short stroll through the woods brought us a carpet of white Ramson flowers. Grounds and walled topiary gardens a pleasure to stroll around. The bonus was a classic car event in the grounds, albeit busy, but plenty of room to move about, and plenty of places for coffee &... Very remote setting for this slightly quirky house which started life as a 12th century Peel Tower. Our guide Shirley was very friendly and knowledgeable. Lovely gardens and very tasty scones in the tearoom!

Whilst staying in Ullswater our hotel suggested this as an outing. Good to see countryside north of Penrith and this superb agricultural estate. Did not find the times of house opening displayed but had the chance to walk around the building viewing the Pele tower, the terraces, the toparies and to visit the beautiful walled garden. Staff very friendly and... More

I wanted to visit this place for a while. I passed this on a road trip one day. I happened to go there on a lovely sunny day. There are guided tours around the house which gives you the opportunity to ask any questions that you may not have been able to ask if you were on your own. I... More

Hutton in the Forest is a beautiful house portraying various architectural periods extended from an original pele tower. We had an excellent guide who included her personal comments and humour which certainly added to the tour. The house includes various interesting ceramic pieces and has four beautiful William Morris arts and crafts early wallpaper or varying designs as well as... More

On arrival we were given a guided tour of parts of this medieval house which we found most interesting, particularly the architectural styles which had been added from early times to the present day. Our guide was excellent & entertaining but we would have liked a little more time to look around the rooms inside and read the articles she... More
