We had such a wonderful experience even though it was, hands down, the hardest thing we’ve ever attempted. There were 3 of us that joined others to form a group of 9. I absolutely loved having the big group because it allowed for many dynamics to be created, day to day or moment to moment!

The guides were beyond top notch! They were so supportive and with 4 of them, August, our lead and 3 assistants guides, Festo, Amedeus and Michael, it allowed for a couple of individuals to have 1 on 1 support when needed. They were so knowledgeable about the mountain which was super helpful whether it was how our bodies were feeling, best way to traverse a particular area, what foods would be good to focus on as we climbed, educating us about the details and specifics of different plant life, etc etc! Their teamwork and leadership was flawless and in sync at all times.

The crew; James, our cook & Eric, our waiter, toilet guy (also called Wi-Fi guy, Innocent), camp manager, Abraham, and the 27 incredibly hard working porters … we could never have done it without them. They work SO hard yet always had a joyful face. They especially appreciated it when we would speak some swahili with them! The food was AMAZING! They were always Johnny on the spot if they saw us struggling with anything, from tying our laces to packing up our gear in the morning.

We tipped much higher than the figures posted as recommendations. But we did it evenly across the porters, specials and guides so no one person benefited over the others. I have run marathons and ultra marathons and my husband has competed in Ironman competitions. We could NOT have completed this experience without the constant helping hands of our guides and porters. They are unsung heroes that deserve to be acknowledged and tipped properly.

We then went on for our 4 day Safari; again, we had an amazing guide, Danny, who now feels like family!

Emmanuel, lead manager in the Moshi office, helped us line up drivers to go to the food markets and a coffee farm in Moshi with Davis, a water fall hike outside Moshi with Damian and then a day trip to the National Natural Museum and Cultural Center in Arusha with Ezekiel.

The only things that come to mind in terms of “what I’d do different”:

1. I would’ve brought cough drops and hard candy (like jolly ranchers). Trail mix and snickers were great for when we stopped and took breaks but there were times I would’ve like to have something hard (sugar) to suck on.

2. Most of our group developed quite the cough after the summit. It hit us when we got down to base camp. I spoke with my ENT doctor at home and it was in line with a cough that can happen with a sudden drop of altitude. I was able to get to a pharmacy in Arusha to take dexamethasone; something I’m surprised my travel doctor didn’t give me a heads up about. It made a dramatic difference in just one day.

3. If I were to book this hike/safari again in the future, I would build in a full rest day between the hike and safari! We were pretty wiped out the first day of the safari. But then again, I’m 57 and my 2 travel companions are 61 and 62. 😊

I can’t say enough praise for Kandoo!! They hire only top notch people!! We are already looking at going on another adventure and will most definitely go through Kandoo again!

We used Kandoo Adventures for our trip to Tanzania for climbing Kilimanjaro and to go on a four safari. First, we were over the moon happy about Kandoo's help and assistance. The staff was professional and joyful during what proved to be a challenging experience. Local staff Emmanuel was always available and helpful in providing clear guidance. Our guides were August, Festo, Amideus and Michael. Without them, many of our nine who summitted would not have succeeded. Lead guide August noticed on day 6 that I was failing and assigned Amideus to guide me to the summit, who remained cheerful and helpful during an arduous climb. Do not underestimate the work required to summit but Amideus literally sang me to the top with the Jambo song and many Swahili songs. He was my angel guide during a time when I doubted my ability to reach the summit. That doesn't exclude the other three as each played a pivotal role in my summitting. Second, the porters were amazing. Abraham assigned to our tent waited to help us and even often laced our boots. The food was varied each meal and essential to keeping up our energy. Third, camp organization was professional and well-done. Fourth, Kandoo will make summitting possible for you. Fifth, our driver, Danny for safaris was knowledgeable, helpful and cheerful. We saw the big 5 animals, and even got to see a cheetah (duma) and a leopard (chui), plus a caravel (rare) and serval. The camp hotels, including the tent hotel in the Serengeti was outstanding choices and made the animal searching fun and relaxing. As a critique of our planning, not Kandoo, we didn't go to Zanzibar and that was OUR mistake. Go to Zanzibar. I also would build in a rest day AFTER climbing Kilimanjaro. And I recommend spending more than one day in the safari parks. Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangeli are all worth a trip. For our next adventure trip, we plan on using Kandoo and hope you do too. Jambo and kwa heri!

Inka Hoots have Epic Experience in Peru Amazing trip to Cusco, Peru, the Inka Trail and Rainbow Mountain for our family of 15 - ages 21 to 62 (called ourselves the Inka Hoots). Rachel planned all the details to perfection. Jose our lead guide , Valerio, Assistant Guide, Carmella our Chef, Ansonio, Assistant Chef,
Sebastian, Head Porter and the entire Kandoo team of porters were such a great team - they worked so hard to make our trek a fantastic memorable experience! Jose is a stellar guide - taught us so much about the trail, culture, architecture and history. Valerio kept us motivated - even for a subgroup climbing to the top of Hyuana Picchu where our son-in-law “to be” proposed to our daughter. Jose and Valerio felt like part of our family. We had an epic experience. We miss them already!

My husband knew Kandoo from his Kilimanjaro hike 5 years ago. We found their price for Peru also reasonable and they got us special hotels where we wanted them. Jose (superstar!!) took us on the short Inca Trail, to Machu Piccu and several other private tours in the Sacred Valley and Cusco. Jose was amazing when one of our trekkers felt ill…carrying his bag and getting us all to the Sun Gate safely. After 5 days of perfect van pickups, photo taking, flexibility for stops and great food recommendations (veggie)…we felt like he was family. Don’t hesitate to use Kandoo and ask for Jose!
