Assynt Workshop 3 to 8 October 2021
Oct 2021
Melvin's workshops represent very good value for money. I speak as someone who has attended a good number of Photography workshops since 2015; this being the third workshop I have done with Melvin.
The weather was reasonable considering that in Scotland the weather is usually fairly predictable, if it is not raining there is a high probability that it soon will be, but the itinerary was flexible enough to catch some rainbow pictures.
The accommodation was first class and the itinerary was well thought out, with early starts for sunrise shots and full days. Melvin's knowledge of the Assynt area is very extensive and the places we visited were very interesting , such as the Old Man of Stoer. Also, there is a high probability that you will learn quite a few new things about technique and post processing, although a certain basic understanding of Photography and equipment would be an advantage.

Superb Zoom Presentation to Bolton Camera Club
Apr 2021
Bolton Camera Club had a thoroughly enjoyable evening on Zoom with North-West based photographer Melvin Nicholson. His enthusiasm and positivity shone through, backed up will his stunning images and often humorous stories about each one, and how he captured each image.

Many of his locations are in England and Scotland, showing what a wonderful array of scenes can be found without travelling overseas. That said, his images from Norway and Slovenia were a joy to behold.

He is well worth booking for an evening, and once the current travel restrictions are lifted some of our members would love to go on one of his workshops. His images are readily accessible on all the major social media platforms.

Camera Club Presentation
Jan 2021 • Business
Last night, Melvin 'Zoomed' in to our camera club (ADAPS) virtual meeting to present his much anticipated talk on Scotland.

What an amazing evening, well worth the wait and excellent value for money, lasting 2 and a half hours.

There was a choice of presentations, but we opted for the one on Scotland, as it was the one place we might actually get to visit in person this year 😊

Melvin's enthusiasm was infectious, his knowledge faultless and his photographs were of course inspiring.
It was one of the best club evenings I've been to in a long time (including Pre Lockdown when we were meeting in person).

If you're looking for a great speaker for your club or event, then I highly recommend Melvin.

Feedback received from other club members:

- Last night’s presentation was amazing, thoroughly enjoyed it 😁
- Some excellent images, there!
- He was brilliant, i'd have to say he was the best speaker I've seen ever. Thank you for having arranged it. 👍👍

Many thanks to everyone at Atherton and District Amateur Photographic Society for allowing me to present my 'North of the Border' talk via Zoom online featuring images from Harris & Lewis, Isle of Skye, Glencoe and Assynt. I was made to feel very welcome by everyone who logged in to watch and you even laughed at my jokes, that's always a bonus, ha, ha. I hope to see you all again in person once the world resumes some sort of normality (Coronavirus). Best wishes Melvin

Tuscany 2020
Sep 2020
Another great workshop with Melvin, this time to the San Quiricio d'Orcia area in Tuscany. A first rate hotel with great facilities (not that we found a lot of time to use them), the hotel also had the advantage that it was within a short drive or even a short walk from some of the iconic sites for great photography in the region.

We photographic at all the great spots and even managed to get mist in the valleys for our early morning sunsets.

As ever Melvin was great fun with more enthusiasm for photography than many people.

Overall it was a great 5 days and I look forward to the next trip with Melvin.

Lake District 1-2-1 day
Aug 2020
Not long back from a fantastic day's photography in the Lake District with Melvin.
This was my first time in the Lakes, and I had spoken to Melvin about a few specific images I was keen to capture, and then left it to him to fill the itinerary for what was a very full day. We met at 9, and went through all day to Sunset - so great value for money.
Melvin's knowledge of the Lakes meant that we went to places at the perfect times in terms of light, and he knew the optimum places to park to ensure we were on location quickly. Melvin's knowledge of the area and also his appreciation for what the microclimate there is doing is invaluable - as he was able to quickly adapt the itinerary as the weather changed during the day.
Undoubtedly we packed way more into the day than I would have managed on my own and we visited several locations that were totally quiet and devoid of the sometimes large crowds - perfect for both photography and in these strange Covid times.
My wife joined us for the day - a non-photographer - and whilst she was initially concerned she would be bored, Melvin is a great host as well as fantastic photographer. She thoroughly enjoyed there day too - seeing a huge amount that we would otherwise never have found.
From a photography perspective, Melvin gives you as much tuition / support as you need. In my case, he let's me set up, compose, and dial in all camera settings / filters etc, and then gives helpful hints and tips to improve the above - tweaking, adjusting, advising in a manner that means that I am confidently creating great images which are improved further by Melvin's technical and creative mentoring.
I will undoubtedly be booking on more trips with Melvin !!

Iceland Feb 2020

This is my first visit with Melvin, both Iceland and Melvin put on a fabulous show, Iceland does not disappoint. Melvin is funny always positive and his workshop is informal. Some suggestion is to offer single occupancy rooms and better time keeping, however that did not in anyway impact the trip which I have fully enjoyed and would repeat again

Iceland Workshop
Feb 2020 • Friends
I have just returned from a wonderful workshop to Southern Iceland with Melvin and group. Even though I’ve been home nearly a week, I have still have the sense of excitement when I see my photographs. Melvin took us to the most beautiful places and we stopped for photo opportunities, which added to the excitement of the day. I feel that I have learnt so much in 5 days, (I am a beginner) and Melvin helped me out when I had technical difficulties, by lending me a camera, which was a wonderful gesture. The trip, Melvin’s warm manner, professional advice, itinerary, choice of hotel/restaurants and the other group members, made this a magical and memorable trip for me. I will return, both to Iceland and other trips.

Lofoten Feb-20
Feb 2020
Just back from a fantastic trip to the beautiful Islands of Lofoten with memory cards full of great images and lots of great memories! Melvin met us all at the airport and drove us back to our base for the week - a large 7 bed house in Ramberg - really central to all the key photographic locations. Each day was packed with plenty of opportunities - with Melvin's excellent local knowledge ensuring we were at the right locations at the right times for sunrise, sunset and the right tides. We were lucky with a fantastic show of the Northern Lights, and had a fresh dump of snow the next morning to enhance the pictures further still.
This is the second workshop I have done with Melvin - and I cannot recommend him enough. He gives you all the support you need, allowing you to find your own compositions, and then giving constructive advice on how to improve and ge the most out each location ands your camera 😊😊

Stunning Lofoten
Feb 2020
Just returned from a wonderful trip to the Lofoten Islands with Melvin Nicholson. I managed to get my arrival times a bit mixed up, but Melvin was kind enough to pick me up ahead of schedule, and recommended a restaurant for me to eat and wait for him. We stayed in a large 7 bedroom house which was conveniently located to all the best photography spots. Poor Melvin was still suffering with a chest infection but still managed to drive our group around the island, provide us with expert advice on how to capture the sights in camera, and to stay in good humour! When there was a break in the weather, we managed to see and photograph the Northern Lights. I have to say that Lofoten is simply stunning and I would love to return to explore the rest of the islands. Thank you again Melvin for looking after us.

Lofoten Feb 2020
Feb 2020
I have just returned from a fantastic trip to Lofoten with Melvin. Despite being under the weather Melvin worked tirelessly to ensure that we had the best experience possible - he even got off his sick bed to drive us to see the aurora - bucket list item ticked off :-) The house we stayed in was basic but warm and comfortable and easily catered for the group. The views from the house were to die for!

Melvin's knowledge of the islands meant that we went to the best locations for the weather and time of day and even on the 'magical mystery tour' we did because of the adverse weather forecast I still managed to get one of my favourite photos of the trip.

The thing I liked most was that Melvin left you alone to create your own images but was always on hand to offer advice and tips should you need it - the perfect host.

Overall a great week with a great host, lovely fellow clients and above all stunning scenery - I would do it all again!
