Bolton Camera Club had a thoroughly enjoyable evening on Zoom with North-West based photographer Melvin Nicholson. His enthusiasm and positivity shone through, backed up will his stunning images and often humorous stories about each one, and how he captured each image.

Many of his locations are in England and Scotland, showing what a wonderful array of scenes can be found without travelling overseas. That said, his images from Norway and Slovenia were a joy to behold.

He is well worth booking for an evening, and once the current travel restrictions are lifted some of our members would love to go on one of his workshops. His images are readily accessible on all the major social media platforms.

Melvin's workshops represent very good value for money. I speak as someone who has attended a good number of Photography workshops since 2015; this being the third workshop I have done with Melvin.
The weather was reasonable considering that in Scotland the weather is usually fairly predictable, if it is not raining there is a high probability that it soon will be, but the itinerary was flexible enough to catch some rainbow pictures.
The accommodation was first class and the itinerary was well thought out, with early starts for sunrise shots and full days. Melvin's knowledge of the Assynt area is very extensive and the places we visited were very interesting , such as the Old Man of Stoer. Also, there is a high probability that you will learn quite a few new things about technique and post processing, although a certain basic understanding of Photography and equipment would be an advantage.

Hi Jonathan Thank you very much for a lovely review. It was a real pleasure welcoming you back on another one of my photography workshops. We had a great week away in Assynt, Scotland, and I am delighted that you enjoyed your time with me, and the other workshop participants. The weather was pretty kind of us and we managed to enjoy some lovely colour at sunrise on a couple of days. Here's looking forward to seeing you again in the near future Jonathan. Take care, and continued happy shooting. Best wishes Melvin

This was my 4th trip with Melvin Nicholson, which says something! Melvin guides you through all the logistics pre travel. Then the days of the workshop are packed with locations. Melvin can’t control the weather but he does minimise it’s consequences, making sure you get a memory card full of images to take home. This trip is real value for money, the accommodation is warm, cosy and rustic. Being in a house has real benefits allowing everyone mix easily sharing their knowledge and experiences at the end of the days shooting. Melvin is full of advise and information and very knowledgable about the area.

I would go again.

Having done a few workshops with Melvin in the last few years, I was keen to try a new location. I settled on Harris and Lewis. The accommodation for this workshop was superb and established a great base on Lewis. Despite challenging conditions at times during the week Melvin got us to some terrific shooting locations, his extensive knowledge of the Islands very apparent. Indeed, adverse weather conditions resulted in cancellation of our ferry and I was appreciative of Melvin’s coordination en route to move us seamlessly to an earlier ferry. Where weather conditions were poor, Melvin’s editing sessions were very helpful and provided new learnings to apply to my image editing.
Melvin was on hand at each shooting location and provided assistance on techniques and composition, which was welcome.
In summary, a hugely enjoyable workshop in a stunning location, which brought a great deal of personal learning too. Excellent.

I went to Lewis and Harris for nearly a week with Melvin . My photography has improved quite significantly as a result. The knock on effect was for me to buy a better camera, a Sony A7, to keep pace with my own skill improvement!

Melvin is passionate about photography which is infectious but he always has time to help and teach to those like me. The group was great and has continued after the workshop. Melvin had a part to play in this as well.

Booked onto his one day Salford Quays workshop straight away and learned more again.
Have now booked with Melvin for Lofoten in 2023.

He has a lot of repeat customers which speaks for itself

Last night, Melvin 'Zoomed' in to our camera club (ADAPS) virtual meeting to present his much anticipated talk on Scotland.

What an amazing evening, well worth the wait and excellent value for money, lasting 2 and a half hours.

There was a choice of presentations, but we opted for the one on Scotland, as it was the one place we might actually get to visit in person this year 😊

Melvin's enthusiasm was infectious, his knowledge faultless and his photographs were of course inspiring.
It was one of the best club evenings I've been to in a long time (including Pre Lockdown when we were meeting in person).

If you're looking for a great speaker for your club or event, then I highly recommend Melvin.

Feedback received from other club members:

- Last night’s presentation was amazing, thoroughly enjoyed it 😁
- Some excellent images, there!
- He was brilliant, i'd have to say he was the best speaker I've seen ever. Thank you for having arranged it. 👍👍

Many thanks to everyone at Atherton and District Amateur Photographic Society for allowing me to present my 'North of the Border' talk via Zoom online featuring images from Harris & Lewis, Isle of Skye, Glencoe and Assynt. I was made to feel very welcome by everyone who logged in to watch and you even laughed at my jokes, that's always a bonus, ha, ha. I hope to see you all again in person once the world resumes some sort of normality (Coronavirus). Best wishes Melvin

This was my first Photography Workshop with Melvin. The accommodation used was well placed for all the locations we visited and the itinerary well thought out and flexible if the need arose. Detailed tuition was available when needed, and Melvin took the time one evening to show me his processing workflow with one of my images. This was invaluable, as was the demonstration of a different filter system which I now use. Excellent workshop!

This workshop to Northumberland was my second visit to this part of the country and having Melvin's experience I was able to get my better photographs than I did when I visited on my own.
Melvin has his own unique style and his enthusiasm never waned despite the weather not playing ball at sunrise or sunset, until the very last day when we were blessed by a magnificent sunrise at Bamburgh Castle.
Melvin gave me the confidence and knowledge to switch from always using Aperture Priority to going Full Manual among many other snippets of advice during the workshop.
All in All a very enjoyable experience and look forward to Iceland next year with Melvin and maybe something before that.

Just returned from a wonderful trip to the Lofoten Islands with Melvin Nicholson. I managed to get my arrival times a bit mixed up, but Melvin was kind enough to pick me up ahead of schedule, and recommended a restaurant for me to eat and wait for him. We stayed in a large 7 bedroom house which was conveniently located to all the best photography spots. Poor Melvin was still suffering with a chest infection but still managed to drive our group around the island, provide us with expert advice on how to capture the sights in camera, and to stay in good humour! When there was a break in the weather, we managed to see and photograph the Northern Lights. I have to say that Lofoten is simply stunning and I would love to return to explore the rest of the islands. Thank you again Melvin for looking after us.
