Great spot for easy access to Derwent Water and other walks

Handy National Trust car park, just cross the road and a path will take you right down to the lake shore. Lots of other options for longer walks starting from here through the woods and up to Walla Crag or Ashness Bridge. There's an information board in the car park with suggestions. You could even use it as a starting point for a complete circuit around the lake (16km). Note that there are no toilets so one star deducted!

Easy Local Walk National Trust Charge for Parking
Nov 2018
If you do not wish to pay parking charges to National Trust, why dont you walk the Roadside path till you reach the Car Park then walk through the wood from there. A good bracing walk taking about 2 Hours from Keswick.

Nice scenic route into Keswick
Aug 2018 • Family
We are national trust members and the joy of membership is free parking in my locations in the lakes.

Parking in Keswick is chaos so we decided to park here. It's literally 1.5 miles from Keswick and a lovely walk arriving lake side. It's quite a narrow path so might be tricky with a pushchair but otherwise was fine.

Try and go on a dry day as you can't take in the beautiful scenery underneath a golfing umbrella!!!!

Easy walk with beautiful views
Sep 2017 • Family
This walk is alonside the Derwent water in Barrowdale Valley side. It is in most places next to the river and is level. Easy for children, great for dogs who have constant access to lake’s water specially on the hot days. It passes through the wood . You can park in Keswick Derwent car park or in the midway there is a small car park. If you wanted to have a shorter walk, you can take a boat from Keswick Derwent stop to one of its stops on this walk. It is also good if you did not want to return from the same path.

Fun and Scenic

A lovely wood that forms part of the Walla Crag and Ashness Bridge walk from the National Trust Car Park in Great Wood. A steady climb all the way with no real lung bursting climbs.

Best taken at a leisurely pace and enjoy the views of Cat Bells and Derwent Water to your Right.

Great Wood walk was fantastic
Oct 2017 • Couples
This walk was fantastic and the walk lives up to its name. Took us about an hour to get upto the top but we are not hikers. When we did the views were breathtaking so worth the trek up. The dog loved it and was running through the woods. Very safe for dogs and children. We loved it so much we went back again.

A great National Trust car park near the lake.
Mar 2017 • Couples
You can park here and walk down to and even around Derwent Water, you can also park here and walk up and around to Walla Crag, almost directly above the carpark. Mostly quiet and easy to access, but take your boots as it can be muddy.

National Trust Car Park

If you are a NT member you can park up for free and easily visit the lakeside rather than pay extortionate amount to park in the towns. Great views.

Great Wood and great circular walk
Jan 2017 • Couples
We visited Great Wood for a walk as we were short of time. The circular walk is described in some detail from the National Trust car park but it charges £4 for 2 hours; £5.50 for 4 hours; and £6.50 all day - which is rather expensive mid-week in January when there are relatively few visitors. We instead joined the walk at the eastern end of the walk where there was free off road parking available. An Ordnance Survey map clearly shows the access points to this walk.

There is a moderate incline involved and the circuit took us around 1 hour 20 minutes to complete. The walk appeared popular with local dog walkers when we visited. If you have more time, then there is plenty of scope to extend this walk into Keswick and/or to Ashness Bridge / Walla Crag.
