we ended up at the HONISTER Mine when we cancelled a guided walk nearby, as weather was too wet/windy, we thoroughly enjoyed the tour with the great guide lady. (IT'S COLD ON A WET DAY!) The slate shop had a lot to offer and we asked to have a WALL CLOCK made for us as we love the green slate... More

Visited Honister Slate Mine yesterday before returning home from a weekend in Keswick. We were taken on the 'Kimberly' underground tour, which apparently is the only tour available at this time of year, but as it happens that was the one we were after anyway. Our tour guide, Roland or "Roly", provided us with plenty of interesting information and history... More

Don't be put off by the reputation as one of the wettest places in Britain, it doesn't get many more rainy days than elsewhere it just rain more heavily! I lived up the valley for over twenty years and have seen the mine develop as an attraction, though it is also a working mine. Plenty of options, some easy some... More

Decided to take a stag group into the mine for the "Climb the mine" activity and was not disappointed! After a short walk into the mine following the old rails you reach the main cavern starting on the far wall you follow a via ferrata style climb up the cavern walls gripping onto large steel rings driven into the rock.... Visited Honister last night for the movie in the mine night. I've seen the Descent many times, but not sat in a pitch black cave, snuggled under blankets with a hard hat on and hot mulled wine. The atmosphere was amazing. It made the movie 10 times better. The staff were really helpful in the visitors centre and the whole... More

highlight of my visit - chance to wear a hard hat with a light and go into a pitch black mine. Very interesting and very different. The pass itself is worth the visit. It is spectacular and appearing in loads of car adverts! Staff very friendly and the whole story of the mine in the past and now is very... More

Old style interactive - not pushbuttons and touch screens but a real live tour guide who knows his subject and interacts with his audience. The kids get a chance to get hands on with 19th Century tools and get involved in the story. Loads of history and some great views too. The cafe is good (a bit on the pricey... More

Visited Honister slate mine for the first time today. Very informative and interesting and we had a great tour guide (Donald) who was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and answered all our questions. Great way to spend a rainy day in Borrowdale but wrap up warm!!
