Located on the Honister Pass linking Borrowdale with Buttermere, the Honister Mine offers a useful place to park to access the fells. An all day car parking fee of £5 is redeemable if you spend a sufficient amount in the mine shop. Paths lead to Fleetwith Pike, Haystacks, Great Gable and Dale Head and give the walker a sneaky advantage... More

We stopped by the shop and look around for about 30-45 minutes. Didn't take the tour of the mine, but really enjoyed just watching a employee using a big saw to cut the stones into smaller sizes. He then used a hammer and chisel to quickly and expertly slice the blocks into sheets of slate. We also enjoyed browsing through... More

We chose the Via Ferrata Extreme, And Extreme it was. The weather made it much worse but the "guide" was excellent and kept us all on track. It was touch and go whether we could do the wire bridge due to the gusting wind, but we did it and it was great. The bacon baps are worth the little extra... More

What an unusual way to spend an afternoon, inside a mountain in the Lakes! We learnt so much about the history of slate and how it's mined. We were amazed! Sad family story re the owner but lovely to see it continue. Well done!

The service and food over the years has greatly improved. The bacon sandwiches are lovely; cooked exactly as we had asked.

We went on this as two families with two kids each and it cost £340 for two hours. The walk itself is pretty straight forward if you have a head for heights, just the one wire bridge is a bit wobbly. Not sure how this place gets such high reviews, if you're used to walking in the Lakes, it's just... More

We were really looking forward to the Via Ferrata extreme as it was advertised as a good half a day challenge. It turned out to be a great disappointment. The Via Ferrata itself is easy to the point of being boring. It would be harder if you just went for a walk on some of the beautiful hikes around. Iron... More

We are very sorry to hear that your experience was not as thrilling as you expected. The word 'adventure' can be a very subjective thing. Many of our customers find the Via Ferrata quite challenging. To quote Emma 'A great way to spend Saturday afternoon. Via Ferrata was brilliant-scary at times but a real sense of achievement'. Maybe you should... More

We did the via ferrata extreme and had a great day. We were blessed with glorious weather and a small group. The guide was pleasant and informative. We felt the course itself was shorter than we expected and time wise didn't last as long as we expected. The activity was quite pricy but it pretty similar to what we expected.... More

Having passed Honister Slate Mine on many occasions with living in the area we decided that as we had my Dad staying with us we would give it a try. We were warmly greeted by the staff and then our tour guide Roly came to meet us and gave us a short but informative talk before we donned our helmets... More

Great morning on the via ferreta course... ADAM, the instructor was a great guy and very patient with my slightly nervous wife and sister in law. The course is great fun and the views at the top are stunning. Even the drive through honnister pass up to the mine is about the most fun you can have in a car!... More
