Went to try pike fishing for the first time ever, and turned up early on a Sunday morning. I was introduced to my guide for the day ( dave ), who had all the gear we required for our day on the lake, rods bait etc.
You could tell Dave knew his business straight from the off, he drove us to our first location, and within minutes had three rods spread out the boat anchored up, and had me watching the floats in what could only be called a hoping vigil.
Unfortunately the weather took a turn for the worst, it started raining.
But within an hour dave pointed out one of the floats was on the move, under the guidance of Dave a successful strike was made, and my first ever pike was was reeled in.
Dave netted and unhooked the pike, i had a few selfies with the pike, who probably weighed in at around 8-10 pound, not a monster but a great catch all the same.
Dave and i stayed out for a few more hours, but the rain was that bad that even my waterproofs gave up and water started to seep in, so being cold and wet, i gave up on the hope of a second pike,
Still it was a most enjoyable day, and dave was great company. The may of ended in a soggy drive home, but i would do it all again.

Called in on the 17/10/20 in the afternoon to book a boat for the Sunday was greeted by a rude obnoxious man, quote trout seasons over me I know but I thought there was no season for rainbows, him we don’t have rainbows, (just seen one jumping) well we will spin for pike, him you can’t do that without heavy tackle, me I have the tackle, him yes but you have to have the special tackle. I thought he didn’t want to hire out a boat, definitely will not recommend them for anything. I don’t think he knows what customer service is.

Sorry friend, there have not been rainbows in Esthwaite for 10 years, that was a brownie you saw jumping. !0 years ago Esthwaite was opened to the natural watercourse and we started stocking brownies. As such our season has to end 30/09, sorry. The pike in Esthwaite go 30 pounds plus and our average over the last week was over 20 so we insist that you have the right gear to catch, land and unhook them safely. If you don't have the right gear you cant fish, sorry, we have to protect the indigenous population, they are irreplaceable. I am sorry if you felt explaining the rules was rude and obnoxious and I understand that you didn't get what you wanted but that as I explained, at this time of year your options are limited.

Esthwaite Boathouse cafe a jewel amongst the trees. We came across this purely by chance…. And what a find. ! On a drizzly august day we walked down to the lake … a man was quietly fishing … and we saw a cafe close to the boathouse. One of the best cups of tea ever, served by the most loveliest people you could wish to meet. The food looked delicious ( car sickness was the only reason I didn’t try any). Lovely clean and well maintained toilets. The undulating road would certainly not put me off another visit…. Certainly worth a look in to support such a beautiful cafe .

We decided to make our way around Esthwaite Reservoir, after visiting Windermere and it being so busy, it was the school holidays though. We thought we might find a quieter spot. Missed a turn and then nearly immediately came a cross this car park right on the banks of the reservoir. Quiet too. Lovely spot with a cafe a short walk away, which we didn’t try in this occasion but will next time. We got our picnic chairs out and just sat on the banks of the reservoir and enjoyed the outstanding views. Two gentlemen standing down from us with binoculars then alerted us to the fact that there were ospreys flying and fishing over the reservoir so we got our binoculars from the car and sat watching them for a while. They were nesting by the water. A lovely experience in a beautiful spot. Just perfect.

We found this place by accident whilst mooching about and omg are we so glad we did. It's a fab little cafe, food is lovely and the price is excellent. Also hired a boat for an hour and went off to look at the osprey (all protected by boundaries which are illegal to cross), we did see them whilst we were out but if you miss them there's always a chance you might see them on the live camera which is shown in the cafe. Not guaranteed though. Overall we will use the cafe as our go to whilst staying nearby. Would recommend to anyone who is visiting nearby hawkshead to spend an hour or two here.

We stayed in Hawkshead and met another couple just before they left and they told us about this little Gem.
They were right. A cracking Cafe great coffee and cakes etc and a beautiful view.
We sat outside in the Sunshine our last morning, watching the Trout jump completely out of the water catching flies, while the anglers on either side of that little bay counted flies! Tee hee.
They had lots of wildlife photos in the cafe and a live Cam feed to a nearby Osprey nest.
Not something I would normally comment on but the WC's in a little hut were such a surprise. Looked dodgy but inside were cleaner and better appointed than some supposedly good Hotels we've stayed in.
What a wonderful memory (the cafe and Lake, not the WC's!)

Again Trip Advisor has this only as an attraction or activity, so some of the more detailed questions are irrelevant.

Found this little haven by chance. Lovely warm welcome on a somewhat damp day. For such a small establishment the menu selection is enormous and more importantly it is all home baked on the premises... the lovely aroma attracts to this cafe. The pies and sausage rolls are great.

They have a large live display unit of resident Osprey nesting and feeding their chicks on some secret location on the lake. Enjoy

We were greeted terriblly by who we thought to be the manager of the fishery. Incredibly rude, unfriendly, condescending and unhelpful.

He told us to use single hooks only for the trout , which we understand the reason for. But next time, pre warn people on your website under rules and regs or over phone when they book with you - rather than trying to embarrass and patronise us when we rock up there like we were supposed to know already.

Can you point me in the direction of where you have specified this rule for anglers before they turn up?

I believe his name to be Dave? Seemed like he had woken up on the wrong side of the bed that morning.

Dave, if you want people to return to the fishery then start treating them with some decency and respect when you talk to them. So rude and condescending.

Not everyone gives this place the thumbs up lot of folk were complaining, I could see there point of view, but even though I didn’t catch a trout course fishing good I enjoyed the setting. The owner keeps the fishery in good condition so that comes at a expense.would like to fish early in the morning and late afternoon to dusk instead of 9 till5 but I suppose beggars can’t be choosers. Will go back because I know you can fish in peace and maybe next time I will use a guide for a couple of hours to get a little more knowledge. Tight lines

Had a brilliant day yesterday. On a guided 1/2 day boat trip with Dave. Tough work in the morning due to the weather but both my boys caught some cracking brownies to 3lb. We stayed on in the afternoon and Jim let us fish on for free, what a gent. Boys caught some more brownies off the jetty and Dave helped land them. Very kind. We will be back in the summer for the perch and bream fishing! Great day just after lockdown ended!
