Great to Visit

Booked to come here through seeing a leaflet. Well worth a visit. Entrance price 8.50 or something similar - a good insight into Jon Ruskin's life - spectacular views

We combined the gardens here with one of the lake tours from Coniston. With our 2 children, aged 10 and 12, it made an interesting and varied afternoon. We had an excellent lunch at the cafe here, and wandered around the gardens/woodlands, looking for the items on the children's trail. It's an exciting garden to explore, with steps and narrow... The home of John Ruskin filled with his original art work, this was a fascinating house to visit and was a step back into a bygone era. Stunning views of Lake Coniston well worth a visit.

Brantwood is a beautifully preserved slice of recent history in the most stunning setting...we found it breathtaking...especially standing in Ruskin's bedroom, in the little annex, admiring the view. The gardens and outlook are gorgeous too!

We stopped here for lunch while exploring the lakes, The cafe is nice and serves a HUGE portion of chips. Its a good base if you want to go exploring the shores of Coniston, turn left out the car park and walk along the road there are a few little paths on the right through the trees that take you... My second visit... my first was '73. A teenager full of hope for the future caught a glimpse of Ruskin's fire and drive for beauty and social justice and philanthropy. This man burnt himself out and retreated to this idyll... he was ready to lay down in the waters of Coniston and allow them to take all the stress and... More

John Ruskin had an unusual and fascinating life, and this property reflects who he was and how he lived. The tour begins with a fifteen minute synopsis of his work and politics and one gets a sense of what a positive force he was. The house is situated in a huge wooded area overlooking Coniston Water and is filled with... More

A place I've always wanted to visit and it didn't disappoint. Lots of interesting information about John Ruskin, such an inspiring man. The gardens are well worth a couple of hours too, if the rain stops!

This time warp is extraordinary. We visited in May 2016 and had the most wonderful experience and may I say privilege in our visit to this lovely house by the lake of Coniston. It was as if the owner had just gone out briefly and we were left there to ponder over his treasured collections. It was very inspiring to... More

A huge property. Just such a shame that there were a limited number of rooms one could visit. All beautifully laid out with incredible views across the lake. Gardens were absolutely stunning and made up for what you couldn't see in the house
