Whilst visiting the beautiful town of Hawkshead in Cumbria, we decided to take the opportunity to visit the Grammar School, one of the oldest in England and an original feeder for Cambridge. Wordsworth was schooled here, and boarded in a small B&B which is still available to stay in in Wordsworth Street. The entrance of £2.50 was at least half... More

I usually find these places a little tedious but was so pleased I went here. The history of the place is enthralling. The guide had made it all worthwhile. The place is absolutely drenched in history. I could practically hear the voices of the boys from classes hundreds of years ago.

Very old school loaded with history! Specially the story's the warden told where very interesting. If you walk up to the church just passed the school you'll have a great view of the village and surroundings. I can recommend a visit to this charming little town.

Tiny place, steeped in history. The thought of 60 boys in the one room all smoking pipes is quite something. Curator brings it all to life and kids gobsmacked at how different it is to their schooling. Charter from Elizabeth I and Wordsworth carving adds to the history. Great value for money.

Well worth an hour to wander around this 'museum' of bygone education. Fascinating school room with highly knowledgeable curator. £2.50 well spent on a rainy afternoon!

We popped in here as a bit of a whim. This is a wonderful piece of history. The National Trust Curator was superb and made this a visit to remember. More than worth the mere 2.50 pounds entry.

The school Wordsworth attended, complete with his name carved (probably by him) into one of the desks. Remarkable historical site, with an impressively knowledgeable curator and a decent display of historical artefacts (including the school's charter, signed by Queen Elizabeth--the first one, that is). And admission is ridiculously cheap. Highly recommended.

Sounds dull but is actually fascinating, primarily because the guide is enthusiastic and knowledgable. This former Grammar School room had a national reputation before a William Wordsworth joined the school as a young boy. The conditions were primitively and the work expected hard - less NHS from 0600 each day! The boys (and for much of the time the pupils... More

Been a couple of times now. Not because of Wordsworth, but just like visiting historical places. The guide was very helpful and we were the only ones in at the time, so had our own personal talk. You aren't in long, as it is so small, but very interesting to hear how school life was back then. My 8 year... More

I wanted to visit this school because I knew that William Wordsworth had attended school here for a number of years and he had carved his initials in a desk, as had all the other boys. The entry fee was nominal and we were treated to a short history lesson by the volunteer. He really made the place come alive... More
