Wonderful Views
Jul 2021
We did the circular walk from Grasmere and whilst some steep sections, it was well worth it for the views and to have a picnic next to the Tarn. Beautiful countryside with spectacular views.

Our favourite walk
Oct 2020
We have been walking the lakes for years and Alcock remains our favourite. It has everything - strenuous approach, tarn at the top, amazing views of Grasmere and a meandering dismount! Just perfect for all levels of Walker.

Amazing views from this lovely walk.
Oct 2020
We walked to the top of the tarn in stages as it is quite steep.
The views of Grasmere, Rydal and beyond were amazing!
Well worth the effort. We had no problem making our way down again.
Sturdy walking shoes are a must.

My favourite walk in the lakes so far
Sep 2020 • Couples
Me and my husband did this walk at 8.00 am on a Saturday morning and it was so peaceful. We didn’t meet anyone else until we were almost back down.

The views are to die for during the climb up. It can be quite steep in places and we had to stop for a few breaks but it was so worth it when we got to the top, especially because there was no one else there apart from the ducks.

Great start to the first day of our weekend in the lakes. Will definitely do this walk again

Medium hike
Aug 2020 • Couples
This is a medium hike of about 4 miles. Its medium because of the ascent and terrain. Good boots are a must. Light waterproof clothing is recommended. Ensure you take water and energy bars or kendal mint. A good place to stop is at the small waterfall for a 10 minute break. Easy path to find. Mobile phone reception is good to aid you however an OS map is also a must. Anyone of reasonable fitness can enjoy this hike, not walk.

Hike in the sunshine
Sep 2019
There was quite a steep climb up to the tarn but the views at the top were breathtaking. However, the climb down was not so fun, especially with dodgy knees. Walking poles would have been useful.

Day 1 of the Inn Way
Sep 2019 • Friends
We walked past this small tarn on our way from Ambleside to Grasmere on the first day of our walk along the Inn Way. A peaceful and serene place with some great views - even in the rain!

Beautiful
Jul 2019
We walked to Alcock Tarn on our last visit in July. The day we walked it was dull and a bit misty but that's just the way it can be in the Lakes. The walk is very steep and you gain you height very quickly which for us is the best way. A well marked and well signed path makes it an easy route both up and down. When we reached the Tarn it was very misty and easy to go the wrong way so It is worthwhile to have some basic map reading skills and the right equipment and footwear on. We enjoyed the walk despite the mist and on the way down it cleared and was an easy walk back. On another day of our holiday we returned to the tarn from a different walk with the sun shining the Tarn looked amazing. If you like a short steep walk this is for you. I've said 2-3 hours but if you want to get a hoof on you can do in less but hey, enjoy the views and take your time.

I never made it but the wife did
Jul 2019 • Couples
We were staying in Grasmere and wanted to do a shorter walk. Have walked past the turn off for Alcock Tarn loads of times but never been to it. It is a very steep slog with great views over Grasmere and the surrounding valley. However I got to within about 10 minutes of the top (and the tarn) and decided I'd had enough. Wife went up and saw it and said it was nice (and not unlike every other tarn we have seen in the Lakes).

Worth the effort
Jul 2019 • Couples
This is quite a strenuous walk, but if I can manage it, anyone can! The views on the way up are stunning. The tarn itself is peaceful. If you carry on past the tarn you can descend by an alternative route and make it a circular walk.
