About
Helm crag woods is situated on the banks of Helm crag en-route to the summit. Access is non restricted via The Lancrigg. Epic English woodland with meandering paths . A favourite place of William Wordsworth . There is a Dorothy Wordsworth memorial approximately half way up The walk on the upper path. A lot of the large trees were planted by Richardson the arctic explorer. We are currently raising funds to begin clearing some of the large monolithic trees that have fallen and re establish the cascading water courses that terrace into some very idyllic ponds.

The hotel is well positioned ad the room had good views (at extra cost). The cooked breakfast is self service and reheated (not cooked at the hotel) and the srambled egg is the worst part. The fruit offering was tinned pears, and the croissants miniture and industrial.
For the prices charged would it cost that much more for someone to actually cook the breakfast fresh. Its very obvious corner cutting.

We came across Lancrigg Wood by accident on the way to Helm Crag (we had taken a wrong turn) so glad we did. Its very well kept and there are a number of walks through the woods or a path up to Helm Crag. There is also parking which is reasonable at ÂŁ6 payable at the hotel/bar Poets Corner. Definitely worth a visit if going to grasmere

Started the walk up to Helm Crag from Lancrigg. Lancrigg itself is an easy, scenic walk along Easedale Road from the centre of Grasmere. The woodland here is charming and ideal for an gentle amble, with the hotel being a great place to stop for refreshments and is dog-friendly. Once the path starts to climb the views are stunning!

Lovely walk through Lancrigg woods today at the start and end of our ascent of Helm Crag. The path is clear with the fallen autumn leaves giving a lovely look, aroma and softness under foot.
We saw a couple of robins and on the way back surprised a small herd of Herdwick sheep.
A huge fallen tree trunk demonstrated the age and immensity of the woodland. I can't imagine the number of species it must support.

If you in the area, not in a rush to climb the nearest peak, but happy to dawdle and take in the ambience, then come hear and enjoy the peace and tranquillity here. Watch out for the red squirrels and listen to the birds. This is an old, if not truly 'ancient wood' and well worth a visit. Then go and enjoy a drink and piece of cake at the bar at The Lancrigg Hotel.

Lovely magical walk where you can see deer & the occasional squirrel. End the walk at Lancrigg where you can have tea in the lovely gardens.

Stop for lunch or a drink at The Lancrigg hotel and walk through the forrest up to Helms Craig to have the mos spectaculair view of the area and Grassmere. Challenging here and there due to long upwards climb but doable for all ages when fit.

We walked through the "Poet's Walk" expecting it to be lovely but were disappointed. It needs a good clear up, the views are non-existant and signage unclear esp when you arrive at the hotel garden. It is a short alternative on the Coast to Coast walk, but not worth the detour.

These mature old trees are splendid but I think not indigenous to the Lake District. When planted this wood was for future generations to enjoy.. so enjoy it now before a gale blows them down.
