Quite easily the best local Tavern in and around Ambleside, a meeting place favoured by locals and visitors alike. There's the hot coal fire upon a cold night and a wide selection of fine ales, wines and spirits, with a great atmosphere with jolly and friendly staff and customers alike. There is a fruit machine, but that is the limit,... More

The Golden Rule has to be my favourite real pub in Britain. By real I mean no music large selection of quality beers, ciders, lagers, malt whiskeys and all the usual drink delights.Lovely open fire, Rowdy behavior not allowed. No food except snacks and pork pies. Very friendly Landlord and bar staff. In other words, the perfect local pub to relax... More

Charming traditional pub with a great selection of hand pulled ales. Very comfortable. Don't serve food but plenty of choice in town. Dog and children friendly.

Ambleside has a selection of pubs, but I find the Golden Rule to be the best for a quiet pint. No loud music (if any) and a warm and cosy atmosphere.

Not much to say except this is a great pub with a homely atmosphere, a roaring fire and a wide selection of cask ales. The locals are always up for a chat and the welcome muddy boots and dogs. What's not to like? The Rebel Red craft ale - that's what! Otherwise it's a great spot for The Craic.

I guess the Golden Rule would be not to tell anyone about this place. It's so good that you sometimes struggle to get in. Such a fantastic pub serving great beer and pork Pies to die for! You could hardly wish for a warmer welcome from the Landlord and the locals include you in the conversation if you fancy it... More

This is an old fashioned traditional pub that does not serve food but has a good selection of wines, beers and spirits (even prosecco). The interior when we visited was decorated for Christmas and the atmosphere was fantastic with a good mix of local's and tourists like us. The bar staff make this pub, they treat everyone the same, very... More

From the moment you walk in you are made to feel really welcome. We love coming here and seeing the two johns, Johns wife,Gregg and Martin. We never want to leave when we get here, but we can't have a liquid lunch or diner so need to reluctantly leave to eat. Sorry about saying the pub smelled john but I... More
