We found this pub by chance after a walk . Really nice traditional pub. Bar man was very friendly and big choice of ales. The scotch eggs (sourced from a local butcher) were fabulous. The type of place you could easily while away an afternoon. Recommended!

on a short three day visit to Ambleside we visited this pub four times and every time the beer was excellent. I tried a different beer on each visit as there are lots to choose from. No pub food, just great real ale! The best pub in Ambleside by a mile.

This pub is set back from the road, just up a small hill out of the village centre so probably not as frequented as some pubs. But that is fine by me. It was relatively quiet when we called in. We sat outside in the beer garden/yard and though it bounced down, it is covered. They have a really good... More

This has become a regular visiting spot on my various walking visits to Ambleside. A friendly old-style pub, where the prime purpose is to serve excellent ales. No TV in the main bar, even though a Euros semi-final was on when we visited this time, which was very much appreciated by both my wife and I at least. The perfect... More

Great place to stop off & talk with locals & bar staff, wide range of beers, fab Guinness & pork pie. ..Different rooms to sit in ,also a beer garden...The front entrance room has a real fire for those colder days to dry off....

This traditional country pub resolutely sticks to it's roots - thank goodness ! It is warm, comfortable and cozy. It literally "sparkles" with cleanliness. The wide range of beers are beautifully kept, the food on offer is restricted to excellent pork pies, pickled eggs and crisps. The staff show attention to detail. A "proper country pub" which draws you back... More

One: Always provide great beer. Two: Always be friendly and helpful. Three: Don't muck (1) and (2) up with that background muzak. Four: Create the most magical atmosphere for backpackers and hill walkers and dog owners- with pictures and memorabilia everywhere. Five: See (1) !

The perfect pub for those who are seeking a quiet drink in a friendly and very welcoming atmosphere. A great place to have a pint and soak up the local atmosphere without the distraction of drunken yobs, screaming kids and noisy juke boxes! A cracking real ale pub with a fantastic vibe. Only wish I had found it at the... More

Having read the reviews, walked past 6 pubs to get there. Definitely worth it. Excellent selection of beers and friendly locals. A must!
