Our friends persuaded us to do this climb when they met up with us on our summer holiday. After spinal surgery in May, I had my doubts I’d be up to this one.
Setting off from Ambleside the climb was steady but demanding but with regular pauses I eventually got to the top….WOW!,, that’s all I can say. The weather was perfect albeit quite windy at the summit but the views were sublime…..Windermere, Ambleside,Wray Castle, the Kirkstone pass, Rydal water, Grasmere lake and the Langdale valley beyond.
I sat with a tear in my eye while I absorbed what I saw. Truly beautiful. We then dropped down into Troutbeck for a well earned pint of Loweswater gold and a fish finger sandwich at the Mortal Man before returning to Ambleside.

Probably one of the best places to see Ambleside and Lake windermere, the pike can be reached from a path to the top left of the village after the market square post.
The first part of the walk takes to past the waterfall then out through a gate to a farm road, turn left at this point and around 300m up the road there is a style into the field.
Go over the style and just keep going up, the climb is a little steep and can be slippery when wet.
The top is around 1600ft,
Wear good walking shoes, trainers are not a good idea.

We walked up from Ambleside which is fairly steep but the path is easy to follow. Great views from the top and some sheltered spots for a picnic. The walk down to Troutbeck is less steep and you can stop for a drink in the Mortal Man or coffee and cake in the village cafe. Walk back to Ambleside via the woods to make it a round trip

Walked up from Ambleside, it's a good path, a little more tricky as you reach the top. Fairly challenging but well worth it for the views of Windermere.
We went directly over the other side and intended to do some sort of circular back to Ambleside, ending up half way to Troutbeck and doing 21,000 steps!
Recommended.

We walked up Wansfell Pike from the waterfalls so it was a steep climb to the top. Once at the top the views were incredible and we were lucky it was a beautiful clear day. Much better coming down the other side making it into a lovely 3 hour + walk.

Wansfell pike is a short alk up from Ambleside, by any of three routes. The steepest and shortest is from the waterfall, or alternatively longer and more gentle routes can be taken. The view from the top is stuning, gving a fantastice view over Windermere and Grasmere as well as the fells all around.

Went here on December with my 8 and 11 year old. Excellent starter walk, great introduction to walks and excellent view at the top. It was a bit windy but otherwise it was a very very good walk for family with young children.

We started this walk/hike from the back of Low Wood Bay Resort. It was a much less
steep hike than from Ambleside. The views along the way were great, lots of sheep and beautiful mountains. The view at the top was gorgeous - of Ambleside and Lake Windermere. We walked down into the town of Ambleside and past the Stock Ghyl Force waterfall - a great end to the hike!

A fantastic walk which I would suggest you do anti-clockwise heading over to Troutbeck first. Stunning views all the way. The descent down to Ambleside is quite steep and tricky in places so easier to come down it than hike up! About 6 miles and dont forget the waterfall as you come into Ambleside. We have been walking really early to beat the crowds and the heat, so peaceful.

If you're not a regular hiker the way up from Ambleside could be a bit taxing ( just take it slow!) but the view is completely worth it. It is very steep. Good shoes definitely recommended. We took the way down to Troutbeck for a pint at the Mortal Man afterwards before mosying on back to Ambleside. Made for a lovely day.
