We didn't choose the route the Sat Nav directed us from Muncaster Castle to Windermere this way. Oh my! treacherous road, narrow, very steep and several bends to encounter with drops and sheep running around. Make sure your car as in tip top condition and it may give nervous or older drivers a heart attack as there's no turning around once you're on it. Couldn't enjoy the view for concentrating on the road,

Not quite as hair raising as the Hardknott Pass, but still a thrilling drive with great views.

The approach roads are very narrow, so not recommended for larger or wider vehicles, or indeed the faint harted…. Also, given the steep winding roads on the pass, make sure that your tyres and brakes are in good condition.

The views at the top make the drive worthwhile

I’d be warned against driving the passes and on route to Wast Water I took the long way round.

But for the return journey to Ambleside I figured why not …how bad could it be?

I think I held my breath for huge sections, had everything crossed that my car would make it and that I wouldn’t hit a sheep or skid off the side.

It’s the only time I’ve ever wished I had dash cam - as I don’t think anyone will believe me when I say just how crazy those roads are.

But, me and the VW beetle survived and I feel a huge sense of achievement having driven both Hardknott and Wrynose.

I’d probably do it again to be honest but with someone else driving so I could take photos!

One of my favourite drives in the country.
An exhilarating 30 minutes through the most amazing scenery with plenty of places to allow others to pass or to stop and take in the views. Probably not for nervous drivers (or passengers), but would recommend for those of a more adventurous disposition!

On a recent trip to The Lakes for his birthday, my son requested that we drove the Wrynose and Hardknott passes...so that's what we did!

Wrynose is the easier of the two, and runs straight into the more challenging Hardknott Pass, although it is possible to leave at Cockley Beck if Wrynose is enough for you.

It starts off by lulling you into a false sense of security, not much more challening than the narrow, windy roads typical of the area, but quickly gets steeper and by then it's too late to turn back!

Take your time, don't be intimidated by anyone sitting behind you, stay in a low gear and give way to anyone coming down. If you think you're going to struggle reversing, they're going to find it nearly impossible to reverse uphill!

Whilst you obviously need to keep your eyes tightly on the road, do allow yourself to take in the stunning scenery which makes the challenge completely worthwhile.

Wrynose Pass is a beautiful road to drive, in the right weather.
Leading onto Hardknott and the Roman remains.
Those who expect Rhinos on Wrynose will be sorely disappointed but a few Herdwick sheep and the occasional rabbit are much easier to find.
The Maneksha Boy should take note.

The people who drive these roads seem to be driven by need to make other road users' drive hellish. Use otherroadse even though it might be long.

I agree with the review by Bald Eagle. My husband and I have just returned from travelling in England. Following the guided drives in a book purchased withIn the UK which provided interesting and scenic drives, we found ourselves on this road. What I had thought was a brook running down a mountain (in the picture of the area) turned out to be in fact, the road! My husband had a fabulous time and fortunately there were sufficient small turn ins every so often allowing two cars to pass each other. Once on the crest of the mountain, I was firmly attached to the seat belt feed hanging on for dear life. There were no photos taken of the scenery (which I am told was wonderful) as my eyes were pretty much shut for most of it. The yeehas from the driver possibly suggested that this was one trip that the driver should have done solo.

The Hardknott and Wrynose Pass are the most terrifying roads I have ever been on, Never again. If you are scared of heights etc I would not recommend this route.

We went through Wrynose Pass by mistake after following the sat nav (which is now in the bin) One of the scariest roads I have driven on, sheer drops one side, rocks the other and 40% inclines. For the few seconds I looked up from the road the views were breath taking! I was shaking when I finally got out the car and we took the long route home! If you don't mind heights and love taking a risk then I would recommend this road.
