Plan a walking tour and do together with Queen’s Garden, the Marina and the town centre. Wonder down Humber st.and take in a bar.

Iconic part of the marina.

An iconic part of Hull Marina, this black lighthouse ship is the only one I’ve ever seen. It looks great set amongst the modern yachts in the marina and so good to see it’s been preserved.

The lightship in the Marina is a good example of the boats that used to be moored along the Humber to warn of moving sandbanks to show safe passages up the river (my grand-father had the job of maintaining these light-ships). This Spurn Point lightship is currently unavailable for visitors as its awaiting repairs.

Interesting history

The Spurn Lightship has currently moved locations from its usual moorings, due to ongoing works at the dockside.

Interesting to look at, though we’ve never been able to go onboard. There are more details about this ship in the maritime museum. Worth a visit.

At rest

Sad to see the lightship berthed in the Marina after countless years in service at Spurn and instrumental in helping to save lives at sea with its guiding light.

Sadly not open to the public
Sep 2018 • Friends
We visited the marina with friends who were staying from the northwest of the country and had never visited Hull before. They were amazed at the lightship, having never seen one before! They were very disappointed however that it is not open to the public. We did some research later and discovered that it was built in 1927 and was used as a navigational aid in the notoriously dangerous River Humber for about 50 years. The lightship has recently been moved from it’s original mooring to a new berth near to Humber Street prior to a new footbridge being installed across the busy Castle Street.

Such an interesting find in the Hull Marina, well preserved, well informed and a delight to the eye as well as heartwarming as to the tough lives that were had by all those onboard this old lightship!! History that can never be forgotten!!
