Everything is so clean and well organized, all the staff are friendly and helpful. I can't wait to take my grandchildren.Thank you for taking the time to post a review after your recent visit. - Jay S18 contributionsExcellent and fun tour with a great tour guideWe did the excellent Call The Midwife tour. Dawn was a personable, informative and fun tour guide. We learned loads about the history of the dockyards and the magic of TV making with lots of informative anecdotes. We finished with a walk around the well preserved HMS Cavalier. The museum is vast and well worth a return visit to see and experience everything.Thank you for taking the time to post a review after your recent visit. We're really pleased to hear that you enjoyed your Call the Midwife Official Location Tour and that you also had time to explore HMS Cavalier. Dawn will be delighted to read your feedback. - Robert FCastle Hedingham, United Kingdom57 contributionsVery poor foodGreat place to visit. You can spend all day there ans still not see it all. One drawback is the food. Orderd fish and chips in the main restraunt but it was awful. The fish was so over cooked when it came it was bent over and was realy hard to straighten it out. The fish was so over cooked the batter was so crispy you had a job to cut through it and on top of that the peas where under cooked. We had a taxi booked and had to try to eat what we could it but that was impossible so we just had the chips. The dinner was so late arriving otherwise we would have sent it back. Will go to the museum again but next time take our own food.Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent visit. We have high standards of food quality and service, so we are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your meal in the restaurant. Your comments have been relayed to the kitchen team and have been taken onboard. We are pleased to know that you enjoyed the rest of your visit and we do look forward to welcoming you again soon. - Mischela15 contributionsGreat place, bad sadwichThere is a lot to see and the staff are friendly. You could stay all day there and it's very relaxed. The food options away from the main entrance is pretty poor and expensive. I don't think I've ever seen a sadder excuse for a sandwich before. Bring your own food and drink especially if you have young kids.Thank you for taking the time to post a review after your visit. We're pleased to hear that you find our staff friendly. We take all feedback seriously and we will pass your comments on to our catering team. They work hard to provide great food that is good value for money so they will be disappointed to read this.Written February 7, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 4, 2023
- HistoricHotelFanPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania106 contributionsAwesome 2 days visiting the DockyardWow! I spent almost 2 whole days visiting. The ticket is good for an entire year. I especially loved the Lifeboat Collection, the 1878 British Naval ship, the WW2 destroyer, the Victoria ship model that was made by a film studio, and the Ropery. I was told rope demonstrations are not held on weekends. I was told the steam train only runs once a month. I took a local bus from Chatham Railroad Station, found right behind the station, and thankfully another passenger & Dockyard visitor on the bus told me where to exit the bus & where to walk to get into the Dockyard. I enjoyed lunch in the Mess Deck. The fish & chips were especially good.Thank you for taking the time to post a review after your visit. We're so pleased to hear that you packed so much into your visits - we love that you came back for a second day. This is the exact reason that we offer an annual ticket. We hope to see you again soon. The demonstrations on the ropework take place on weekdays at 12.15 - so maybe next time you visit, come along during the week as this is a real 'must see'.Written February 7, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten December 2, 2023

A well organised and thought out walkthrough that brings Christmas and the Dockyards together - some good touches that bring artefacts in line to the Christmas mission. The elves that take you through the sections ensure all the children and adults understand and take part. Santa at the end took time to speak to our boys too - the free picture is a nice touch too.Thank you for taking the time to review our Mission Christmas experience. - 747trottersLondon, United Kingdom9 contributionsParking ChargesYou pay once for the year but there are quite a lot of days that it's either closed or your ticket doesn't cover you for special events, which have to be paid for in full, no discount for already having paid for yearly admission. I used the cafe quite a lot as a place to meet up with friends and family as parking was free. However, when the docks reopen in February 2024 the free parking will be no more. Your yearly ticket will only give you free parking for day one. My yearly ticket expires in May 2024 but I'll not be visiting the dockyard or its cafe again purely because of the parking charges. Had I known this before I bought my yearly admission in May 2023, I would have spent my money elsewhere. Note to the owners of Chatham Dockyard....I was spending a great deal more in your cafe than you would ever get from charging me to park. Go figure!Thank you for taking the time to post a review. To confirm, anyone visiting the Historic Dockyard will not be charged for car parking when we reopen in February 2024. We were exploring a few options for car parking during 2023 and the confirmed decision for 2024 is that parking will be free for museum visitors. Our annual ticket is valid for 1 year from the date of your first visit and for 2024, there are only 4 dates during our main opening season that annual tickets are not valid, this is for Medway Gaming Festival (15 & 16 June) and Salute to the '40s (14th & 15th September). We have an exciting programme of exhibitions, events and activities planned for 2024 and we hope that you will be able to visit us.Written February 7, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 21, 2023
- JaneMLondon144 contributionsLoads to see - at least 2 days' worth. Highlights were Heart of Oak and The RoperyThere is loads to see here - at least 2 days' worth. It was pouring with rain but we still loved it and there is enough that is inside to cope with the weather! We saw the Heart of Oak gallery which is very imaginative and the sections of the museum in that area. Also watched a demo of ropemaking in the Ropery, which was great and was a genuine commercial rope order being made for delivery. Had a tour of the submarine - not for the less mobile as the hatches are small. Gave a good feel for what a sub like that would have been like. Ran out of time (we were there all day) and we will certainly be back to see the rest ( the ticket gives multiple entry for a year, fortunately). Big car park, but you can also get a couple of buses from Rochester, changing at Chatham or just walk it from Rochester in about 30 minsThank you for taking the time to leave a review, and we're thrilled that not even the rain could put you off. - Vixie84York, United Kingdom20 contributionsBrilliant friendly and knowledgeable staff.Brilliant day out and I would definitely like to visit again. There is way more there than can be done in the day. The staff were excellent. On the ticket desk they were very friendly and helpful. The first guide when we went in was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I was very nervous about going on the submarine but they took the time to explain the layout to me. The guide on the submarine was also excellent. She was very knowledgeable and made the 30 minute tour go very quickly. The site is massive and I need to go back and explore more of it but there was plenty do undercover despite the rain. We also had a very nice lunch at the cafe.Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to The Historic Dockyard Chatham. It is a pleasure reading your kind comments and hearing that our staff are doing a wonderful job. Don't forget that your ticket lasts for a year, so plenty of time to visit again and see the bits that you might have missed.Written March 22, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 11, 2024

Unfortunately you dont have the opportunity to buy a day ticket you have to sign up for an annual pass (£25 pp)... we were only there for the day! Make a day ticket available to tourists please.
We begrudgingly paid, and went through to the first section of a guided tour... which wasnt actually guided as it was such a quiet day and there was a total of 5 people, so we were left to coast through. So didnt really feel that we got our value for money.
One of the ships was closed off due to bad weather, but went on the other boat and the sub which was good.
Had a coffee and a sausage roll in the cafe/restaurant and there were pigeons flying low inside, landing on tables and pooping on them.... just felt a bit grotty especially as its inside.
Overall wasnt overly thrilled on this experience, not convinced on returning.

Dear 194catherineh,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review about your recent visit. We feel that the ticket price of £25 for an adult represents value for money considering it gives access to our 80 acre heritage site and includes access to all our galleries. We will investigate the issue around your guided tour at the start of your experience as this is something that should not happen and we will also pass on your feedback to our Catering team to look in to this situation. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed going on board one of our historic warships and HM Submarine Ocelot and albeit this time you did not have the experience you hoped for, we do hope you are able to visit us again to have a great experience and visit with us.

We were met by a woman at the front desk who looked like she would rather be somewhere else we also found her rather an unpleasant person. We then found out that for a family of four it was £71! What a liberty, I mean I love history but 71 pounds to walk around some rusting metal if I had known that these were the prices I wouldn' t have come. They are meant to be preserving history but through out the trip we kept seeing high security automated gates , one in which hit me in the leg , that's not what I want my ticket money to be spent on! I thought the exhibits could have done with more information that being said the Heart of Oak tour was really good!
We boarded the HMS Gannet which as I mentioned could have done with more information. The top deck was closed however a kind member of staff let us have a quick look. We ate lunch at their restaurant ' The Mess Deck '. Everyone in our group had the fish and chips apart from one who had the Kentish sausage and mash, the dockyard did both famous British dishes justice especially the sausages as our ' rogue ' dinner stated that they were of excellent quality, greaseless and flavoursome.
After lunch we boarded HMS Ocelot (which we had to book) but unfortunately we joined the tour five minutes before we should have a so we were given a stern telling off from an old seadog who wasn't pleased by our purely accidental mistake. Eventually our assigned tour guide showed up and he gave us a really interesting, well informed tour in short they were just a nice person to be around.
We also looked at some of the temporary exhibitions and boarded HMS Cavalier which were quite interesting.
All summed up I think this was definitely an overpriced experience you were only allowed to buy a 12 month ticket which we didn't need but yet had to buy because it was the only option. To make it worth the price it needs a bit of a refurbish ment more informative displays ( so you actually know what you are looking at) and definitely more interactive experiences for children maybe they could have members of staff dress as sailors and have them to pretend to be doing tasks that would have been done on the ships whilst explaining what they were doing.

Thank you for taking the time to write to us about your recent visit Jack. We believe our annual family ticket offers great value to explore our 80 acre site, three historic warships, various museum galleries & exhibitions, and gives you the opportunity to attend family friendly activities throughout the year. We are glad to hear you enjoyed our Hearts of Oak gallery and lunch in the Mess Deck Restaurant. We will be sure to pass on your feedback regarding information boards within HMS GANNET. There is plenty of information boards below deck but this can be easily missed as this pathway is not explored by all visitors due to accessibility. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed the ships and galleries, you should never feel penalised for arriving early for the submarine tour. Thank you again for your further feedback regarding informative displays. Regarding refurbishment, we have an excellent team of staff and volunteers who look after the site and keep everything looking shipshape for your visit. Throughout the year we have plenty of family friendly activities for children which are included within your annual ticket so you can come back and experience our activities all through the year on your ticket. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Dockyard again soon.

Would recommend that the website requires updating to "NO DOGS ALLOWED" as it currently states that although dogs are welcome they are not allowed in some of the Galleries. We visited Friday with our dog and were told that we could not take her in any of the Galleries HS reasons as a visitor previously was allergic to dogs and that they could not have a dog peeing in the Galleries. Although supposedly dog friendly there were no water bowls any where nor was there sufficient shade especially on a hot sunny day. Having pre booked our tickets we were disappointed as having the dog with us we were not able to visit all of the attractions. All staff were excellent especially the young lady who took my Wife to an outside tap to get water for our dog. Would certainly go again but on our own.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback from your visit. We do mention that we are a dog friendly site as we have plenty of open spaces and a nearby walking trail, however it also states on our website that dogs are not allowed onboard our historic ships and inside our galleries. We will pass your comments onto the team to ensure this is made clear upon arrival and ensure dogs can have water bowls at hand. We hope to welcome you back again soon to enjoy the rest of the galleries and attractions.

The exhibitions are excellent and the knowledge of the guides outside the actual ships on show are good.
We took our 10 year old and 9 year old at half term.
Booking was easy online although you do have to register names date of births. We arrived at 10.00am and it took a few minutes to get our tickets processed. I should imagine later in the day this would be annoying if you pre-booked and then had to queue for several families to be processed because when you arrive the adults have their picture taken as the ticket lasts a year. After that you can come and go as you please.
We saw the lifeboat museum, the hook a duck, games at the museum and the 2 ships and the submarine.
We did break off to use the cafe for lunch but it took about 15mins to serve 5 families before us so this left little time to eat anything else his was the only real area that could do with improving . Allow an hour for lunch. Not vegan friendly.
The submarine and the games you have to book a slot at the start.
We didn’t bother with the rope making room and other exhibitions as it would have been too long a day for our kids and as we live 45 mins away and can make use of the yearly ticket.
We took 4 hours including 40-60 mins breaks without rushing.
The ships and the sub are very interesting but as you can imagine they aren’t very Accessible for everyone. There are steep ship ladders and the sub has small hatches that you have to navigate through along it’s length.
I recommend going in last on the sub so you can take it in without feeling pressured to move along for people behind you in your group. It’s like a very narrow corridor. The ships you can move at your own pace.

Thank you for taking the time to write to us about your day out with us over February Half Term. We are so pleased to hear you enjoyed the exhibitions and ships. Thank you for your feedback with regard to our food options and timings for having lunch, this will be passed on to the team. We do have some vegan options available in both of our food outlets.
With regard to access of our ships, HMS Gannet has an accessible ramp to allow visitors onto the main deck, HMS Cavalier is step access, however, we do have an accessible ramped entrance, please ask a member of the team when you arrive for access. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Dockyard again soon so you can continue to explore the rest of our Historic site and take part in the ropery tour and experience the other exhibitions.

The ticket allows unlimited revisits for about a year so is excellent value. I last went when i was a toddler apparently but i do not remember any of that. So a re-visit was due. I have a yacht myself so was in the area for the weekend, yet only live half an hours drive away in Erith so not far to go to again. Visited all the vessels, like others say, Ocelet is the highlight but while the guide was nice we felt rushed through and hardly had a chance to take in all the rooms along the way in the sub's corridor. Cavalier was also great but the engine room and bridge are out of bounds when we were there as theres scaffolding by the bridge and the engine room has asbestos. HMS Gannet was nice but not much to see on there, the Cutty Sark has more. The RNLI display was fascinating as I know a few people who are members at Gravesend and Burnham on Crouch stations. Its a shame a lot of the steps were closed off for the exhibits though or perspex blocking steps down to the lower crew quarters on one of the larger boats. The WW2 vehicles were interesting too with so much heavy engineering on show. Thanks for all the staff at Chatham Historic Dockyard for making the day welcoming.

Thank you for posting such a detailed review of your recent visit. We're pleased to hear that you enjoyed your day. We appreciate the feedback that your visit to HM Submarine Ocelot felt a little rushed. We are operating the tours in a slightly different way this year to try to keep everyone safe but also ensure as many of our visitors can experience her interior as possible. HMS Cavalier is currently undergoing some essential maintenance and preservation work on her mast, hence the scaffold tower. We will pass on your kind words to our teams and hope that we will be able to welcome you back again soon.

We went to tour the docks at Chatham and were appalled at the cost. 25 UK pounds per person is a bit steep for pensioners. Our hosts were likewise shocked at the cost. It is a magnificent site and has great history but we could not afford the entry fee. Such facilities should be far more accessible to all!

Dear planty2017,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are sorry to hear you felt your visit was overpriced. As a charity, all profits made through the sale of our admission tickets go towards the preservation of our 80-acre historic site for the benefit of our visitors now and in the future. Our entry ticket allows access to 3 Historic Warships, 10 museum galleries and our changing exhibition programme, which we feel represents excellent value for money even if you can only visit us on one occasion. We continually check our admission prices with other attractions to ensure we are giving our visitors best value for money and we also offer concession rates. We do hope we are able to welcome you here again in the future.

Fantastic evening was had by all at our table and from taking to other guests and seeing them as well it seems that Chatham Dockyard Christmas Parties have got the formula perfect. Lovely layout, greeted on arrival by lovely Lady on stilts in a fabulous outfit, who later on turned out to also be the DJ as well! She kept the Dance-floor full and ticked all the boxes by playing every tables requests so everyone got something they asked for as well. The singer/comic was absolutely brilliant, so many epic Suits as well! He kept the evening flowing and then when we thought he’d wowed us already that was just the start because he then baffled us with astounding magic tricks as well! Never seen so much entertainment from just Two people! Hope they’re on a good wage! The food was top draw and the staff and service was so very good indeed. All in all it was by far the best Christmas Party ever.

We only had a few hours here, and its was fabulous. The architecture, the exhibits and the demonstrations, particular the rope making, made time fly. On a lovely day, the various gardens are wonderful for a rest, a snack or simply to let your imagination conjurer up what activities might have gone on around you in times gone by. To do this place justice you really need 2 days for a more leisurely exploration. We will happily return.

My friend and I visited here as a spur of the moment decision, because we wanted to see the submarine. We booked our tickets online from the carpark, and were able to go straight in. We were sad that due to Covid restrictions we were not able to board or touch the Sub, but we were able to view it and read all the info boards placed around it. Then we looked around at all the other items they had on show.
Lunch was limited again due to restrictions but we were able to order some chips (they were lovely), and sit inside to eat them.
We will be returning (we now have an annual ticket) and hopefully, Covid permitting, we will get to board the sub.
(We also played in the children’s park as it was empty and we are big kids!)

Thank you for your review Blueyebutterfli. We're really pleased to hear you enjoyed your day with us and hope that we can let you see the inside of HMS OCELOT (our submarine) as soon as it's safe to do so.

Went on a daytrip from London to Chatham to see the Dockyards. The walk to the Dockyards from the station was absolutely horrible. Endless streams of cars both ways, already very noisy (and lots of pollution visible over the road) made even louder by the high brick walls by the road for much of the way, and with disrespectfully narrow sidewalks and then, as a crowner: not being allowed to enter the Dockyards at its main grand entrance, but instead being made to "walk around" for another 1/2 mile or more, and then having to guess where the main building was and the ticket office.. Overall clearly very thoughtless planning by the Dockyards and Chatham City, and not at all done from the visitor's (customer's) point of view.
Chatham Dockyards and the Mayor of Chatham please take good note, and work to make a visit to Chatham and the Dockyards a pleasantly memorable experience.
Tickets at £25 were overly priced. Saying you can come back free within a year is of little value to many including me, and comes across as a rip-off.
The exhibits were pretty interesting. The history of the place, the shipbuilding, the wars, the ropemaking etc. meant you learned new things, and was good for kids (if their ticket prices got lowered too). The two ships were kind of ~ok (but SS Great Britain in Bristol was much more interesting and better presented).
The submarine tour was truly excellent and very informative, and gave you a very good feel of life on board especially due to the very good guide.
The Coffee Shop was confusing. A display of different cakes to eat with no prices marked -which gave you a sense of a rip-off being in store. Eating outside on the terrace should have been a pleasant experience, but again there was a large very noisy outlet fan from the kitchen with no sound dampeners/baffles, making it unpleasantly noisy to sit outside and enjoy our coffee (guys, come on, you can fit a silenced fan I'm sure?)
Overall I wouldn't visit Chatham and the Dockyards again due to these experiences. I would suggest to the Mayor and Council of Chatham to build some new traffic routes to take a lot of this traffic away, and to the Dockyards to lay on regular shuttle buses clearly signposted at the train station so people don't have to suffer that truly unpleasant walk, to review your ticket prices and fix that noisy fan!

Thank you for taking the time to write to us with your feedback. Our Main gate entrance is not set up to process visitors and we do appreciate the walk around to our main visitor entrance can take some more time, we will investigate how we can sign post this more clearly via our website.
We believe our annual pass offers fantastic value for money, giving visitors the opportunity to return throughout the year to experience a range of new events, galleries and activities.
We are happy to hear you enjoyed the exhibits and submarine tour, we will be sure to pass on your feedback about this aspect of your experience. Our other two historic warships HMS GANNET and HMS CAVALIER are preserved by our ship keepers and volunteers who work continuously throughout the year to keep them looking shipshape for our visitors.
We believe in the value of our catering offer with both our Mess Deck Restaurant and Wagon Stop Canteen providing a variety of brilliant food choices and sweet treats at a fair price, we will pass on your feedback regarding the availability of our cakes prices. With regard to the loud outlet fan, this is very unusual and is not the case. We will investigate this to ensure it does not happen again.
We do hope that when we reopen on 11 February for 2023 that we are able to welcome you back to the Dockyard to experience the rest of what we offer here, being an 80-acre site we do appreciate it can be difficult to pack everything we offer here into one day.

I would say pretty accessible. There are some uneven steps and access to the ships would be tricky but some displays etc are inside and the lifeboat exhibition has ramp access.

Do we still have to pre-book our tickets if we are using a yearly pass to revisit the Dockyard, or just turn up on our chosen day?
I checked the website but couldn't find any info regarding this!

Just turn up on the day that you want to go
Written August 11, 2022
The nearest railway station is Chatham which is about a 15 - 20 minute walk to the Dockyard.

There is disabled access so a buggy should be no problem

Is there a penny press machine there

Is there any restrictions on photography?
Written August 11, 2019
The only area in the whole Dockyard where You CANNOT take photographs is the permanent gallery, the National Maritime section in No.1 Smithery

When booking the Call the Midwife tour, does that ticket enable you to the yearly pass please?
Written May 20, 2019
Dear Teresa, the Call the Midwife Official Location tour gives you access to The Dockyard and its usual galleries and attractions for the day of your tour. It is not valid for any other day. We hope this helps explain.

I’m thinking of booking this tour for me and my friend is there any shops to visit around the area as we are travelling a far long way and if the tour is only half a day we need other things to do ?
Written January 1, 2019
There are shops close by and the town centre is a close walk from the place.
