A transformation for the good!
We visited this pub for the 1st time since it reopened in June 2021. Previously it was a dire place with no sole but the new owner and management has done an excellent transformation and it is both cosy, warm and welcoming. Great atmosphere, wonderful real ale: I tried the red top and Dark Star Hop Head and then two different real ciders while my wife tried the Vino Verdhe. The service was excellent and one felt at home. I cant wait to when they start serving food.

£5 for a pint was a bit steep considering the amount of students that live locally. The place now lacks the atmosphere that used to be here. The food is £5 per dish . The guy serving seemed rushed off his feet . He covered the bar , took food orders and delivered the dishes to tables.

Beautiful hot fresh Sunday roast .I chose the vegetarian option which included red stuffed pepper in place of meat. Only £5 and beautifully cooked and served . Friendly bar staff .. definitely would go again

Amazing
Aug 2019 • Friends
My brother and I came here with a friend of ours today (01/09/19).
My brother and I have been several times before, but our friend had ever been.
We were all extremely impressed. The food was delicious, great portions and well priced.
The staff were attentive and great fun.
We had vegan nachos and vegan bbq wings which were delicious and our mains were great too.
Amazing all round!
We shall all be returning!

Disappointing for a vegan place
Mar 2019 • Family
Good that is all vegan food but very complicated to actually experience the food. Our first 3 main choices weren't available as they run out of chilli, mac'cheese and tofish, so there wasn't too many choices available after that. The food was not very special or tasteful despite edible, the hotdog was not good and we couldn't eat. The coleslaw was good. The nachos were lower than average. The desert was good but small for the price. The temperature was cold. The service was poor and slow, took approximately 1h30 to get all food, despite we ordered all even the desert at the beginning and we booked a table days in advance and before the busiest time at 6.30pm. The table was dirty between the gaps. Environment was uncomfortable and not friendly. Staff disorganised. A shame for a full vegan place.

Hi Joanna, We’re incredibly sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with us on your most recent visit. You should have been advised that in our kitchen that day was a new chef who was working an incredibly busy shift. You may have noticed the entire pub was full on your arrival and staff always aim to advise that food may be somewhat delayed. We’re sorry that there were some missing menu items on your visit, however including specials we’re proud to say that we still have over 40 other meal options to choose from. Our desserts have recently been repriced in line with our new menu and we have always been complimented on our portion sizes for both mains and puds, so we’re sorry that you believe we fell short in this regard. We’re pleased to say that the staff working during your visit have in fact garnered us some very positive reviews with regards to their performance so we’d be pleased to hear from you exactly what your concerns were so that we can accurately address them moving forward. We do hope you’re not deterred from visiting us again in the future and thank you for your comments.

Good vegan food
Jan 2019 • Couples
My wife and I often frequent the monument with our kids. Being vegans it's one of the few pubs with a good range of food.

It can get very busy, but the food was a worth the wait. Great beer too.

If you're not vegan, then please don't post negative reviews. You just sound bitter...perhaps try less meat in your diet 🤣

Vegan pub
Jan 2019 • Friends
My friend is a vegetarian so we decided to try this vegan pub food. The pub itself is clean and pleasant but the menu disappointing mainly burgers with fake rubbery cheese. The curries were not available so limited choice. We had the Mexican burger not at all tasty and very small very carb heavy with a brioche bun plus chips. The salad had a nice dressing but definitely won’t return. The chips were in their skins and the best part of the meal. My friend asked for tap water and this was served with a nice piece of lemon.

We're sorry that you didn't enjoy your visit to us and found the menu to be limited. Although we pride ourselves on our extensive burger menu, if you're not a huge burger fan we can imagine that you might find our ten mains, three hotdogs, seven paninis and twelve sides slightly limiting. Not to mention our constantly rotating specials menu which was also available. We have removed our vegetable curry from the menu and it will soon be replaced as our new menu becomes available in the coming weeks. We're pleased to hear you liked our chips and salad. We've had consistently positive reactions to both our pretzel burger buns as well as the new sliced cheese we've been using so we're sorry that it wasn't to your personal taste. We pride ourselves on offering the best in vegan pub food and junk food alternatives and we can understand that if you're not much into that, our menu might not appeal and for that we apologise. We do hope that you may give us a second chance to win you over with some of our new menu offerings once it is released in the coming weeks!

Cold food, long wait
Aug 2018 • Family
I did have doubts about this place, but booked because as we had 3 vegans staying over. Booked 2 days in advance for 3pm for my Sunday birthday lunch, but not served with even a starter until 4.15. Not much choice on the menu. Everything we asked for on the menu was not there. Ended up getting 2 sharing platters for starters. No plates or cutlery provided. Had to ask for some paper napkins. Had to also ask for some dips and were prvided with 2 very small pots, one mayonnaise, one tomato based (FOUND LATER THESE WERE £1 EACH). Just enough to keep the wolf from the door before another long wait.. Then to add insult to injury 2 guests were served stone cold sausage and mash. All the mains ordered were supposed to be served with peas . The fish & chips should have had lemon - none!! The waitresses gave no excuses or apologies. When we asked, told no peas available and offered and accepted some side salad.
I really wanted to support such a venture in Canterbury, as on the face of it, it's very worthy. But to be charged so much for mainly dishes of battered food, I will not be returning. My guests live in Brighton where they are very well catered for as vegans. I didn't particularly want to cook and was looking for a celebration meal. Think again!!
When we asked if the was some problem we were informed that the chef was not there for whatever reason and someone else was doing their best. We did feel a little sorry for the staff who appeared under stress. But my special day was ruined.
