Ridiculous house rules
Jun 2021 • Family
Me and my two friends along with our infant children (newborns) decides to come to the dolphin for lunch. We checked in and asked for ID upon arrival. (Both my friends had ID unfortunately mine has been sent off as recently got married) We got told our whole party could not be seated as we need proof of age that we are all over 30 years of age. Failing this we can eat with our mum if we have no ID. We came with newborn babies so didn't intend to drink alcohol but yet we still needed to provide ID to have a soft drink with a meal. I find this terrible as heard great things about the service and food, however, I can't understand why we were told we can not be served food or drink if Identification for being over 30 years of age (i am 31 married and have 2 kids) is not provided, even if alcohol was never going to be purchased.

Poor management
Jun 2021 • Friends
0 stars for this pub, the waitresses were lovely and very accommodating, unfortunately the manager who wasn’t on shift was very rude and had told the waitresses themselves to not serve us for no reason. He shouldn’t be drinking at this pub if he’s not working and telling the workers that he can’t serve us. Absolute disgrace.

Manager was rude
Jun 2021 • Friends
If I could give 0 stars I would. The waitresses were lovely but the manger was so rude. Never going back. He was not even on shift and was telling everyone to be quiet. You’re at a pub to have a good time. Told the waitresses not to serve us anymore even though we weren’t being loud?
Just shows that he doesn’t care about customers and only wants a place to drink for himself and his friends.

Pub drinking

Lovely pub! Will definitely be returning very soon. Staff very kind and welcoming. Dealing with difficult costumers accordingly and keeping it safe during Covid. Elise was a perfect waitress dealing with all our needs and making our stay easy and relaxed, whilst keeping the drinks topped up.

First trip out since reopening
We came yesterday on the off chance of a quick drink on our way home. We hadn't booked and obviously it was packed but Beth on the door was amazing and had the foresight to see that a booking at 6 was still an hour away so if we didn't want food she could let us have the table for an hour, on the understanding we leave when the 6pm booking showed up. We happily agreed and got our table. She kept an eye buy the 6pm booking didn't show up (which is out of order from them!) So she advised we could keep the table, so we happily ordered a few more drinks! We had tried a few other places in town and hadn't been successful even though they had free tables, but Beth was clever enough to work round it!
The staff serving were amazing too, so attentive and friendly, despite clearly being very busy and it all being new rules etc. We never had to wait for drinks and it was all so smooth. We will definitely be back and have food next time as it looked lovely too.
Well done Dolphin and Beth x

Medicore and unfriendly
Oct 2020 • Couples
I have frequented this pub for at least the last decade, often taking visiting family or friends there for a meal. Unfortunately it has recently been taken over and it is no where near as good as it was.

We waited a long time to be seated, when we were it was clear the table had not been wiped down as it had ketchup on it, in "normal" times not such a big deal but during Covid this seems like a huge oversight. I mentioned this to the man who was apparently the manager; the customer service was significantly lacking, he was rude and I felt he was shaming me for asking for it to be rectified.

There is no drinks menu printed so you essentially have to guess what is on offer, the member of wait staff was not particularly helpful when I asked what was on tap.

Added to this, staff were in visors and not masks which is not Covid-secure and contrary to the government advice to the hospitality industry.

We were planning to eat at the pub but decided against it as staff could not tell us the time the kitchen would be opening and on looking at the menu it seemed extremely expensive for what was on offer (I feel there's only so much a pub should charge for something like mac 'n' cheese or dirty fries!) But obviously without eating there it is hard to comment, it may be the case that it is worth the price.

I do hope this business finds it feet as it has long been a solid, reliable food pub in the City with great service and it would be a real shame to lose it.

Sunday lunch - The best in Canterbury
Oct 2020 • Family
I’m fussy, always have been, and when it comes to going out for a Sunday roast I’m even more so! However having had several Sundays out at The Dolphin I’ve never been disappointed. Not only is it a welcome greeting (even during Covid times) but a vast selection of drinks and a varied menu help wash away any anxieties of dining out. Friendly staff and delicious food make it the ‘go to place’ in Canterbury for a feel good atmosphere and an amazing cheese board!!

Very disappointed

Very disappointed. Took one-and-a-half hours for main course to come and then the beef was cold.

Expected us to pay without showing us a bill.

Not recommended.

A £15 burger...do me favour!!!
Aug 2019 • Friends
Nice staff, good atmosphere but the food is bang average. £15 for a burger and they don’t even have a full complement of sauces.

Witnessed the management berating the staff which really put me off the venue. It’s not easy being in the service industry and what I witness was disappointing.
