Walls that speak.

A fascinating example of wall painting in an old, well-preserved court house. Good presentation by the guide.

Unusual Elizabehan frescos
Aug 2019
The painted room is on the upper floor of a 15th century timber framed council building in Church Lane. The entrance to see the room is round the back of the building in Church Street. The volunteer guides take you up a staircase to the room and explain its history. Admission is free (closed on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays) but donations are welcomed. The tudor frescos (from around 1560-70) were discovered during renovations thirty years ago. They are based on a tudor knot garden with texts taken fron english bibles. Parts are very well preserved, others less so because of 400 years of papering and painting over the original plaster.

Unusual and interesting room in an Elizabethan house.

Staff were very ready to talk visitors through the rooms and answer questions. The painted walls are fascinating and unusual. There is a feeling of timelessness to the exhibit. Even so, you do not need a long time to make this visit.

So pleased we wort this gem out.

A short talk helps understand the building and the wall paintings. A wonderful find and gives a wonderful idea of what those up and coming Tudors wanted to show off in their homes. Make time to see it if you can. Need to go upstairs to view.

A Tudor room with original wall paintings.
Jul 2019 • Family
Near the Market Hall, this otherwise council building houses a fairly recently discovered secret - a painted room. The paintings which can be dated fairly precisely to a point in the 16th century. The guide was knowledgeable and helpful and genuinely interested in the subject at hand. It is free but donations are welcome. The paintings are of flowers and there are biblical quotes dotted around. All rather beautiful and in one of the oldest buildings in Ledbury. Well worth a visit.

Brilliant Tudor frescoes

An unusual chance to see some very well preserved mid 16th century fresco work, with free access and excellent explanation by the tour guide, in one of Ledbury’s many timber frame houses

Amazingly well preserved wall paintings
May 2019 • Couples
We stumbled upon this most amazing surviver from the 1560's and were both captivated by the story of how the wall paintings and Bible quotes were found. The lady who presented them to us gave a very interesting talk and explained their history. The visit is free but we felt it necessary to leave a reasonable donation to help with both the renovation and running costs. Definitely a must see if you're in the area

A warm welcome greeted us as we were invited to take a seat in the upper room & listen to a short & very informative talk about the painted room by a very knowledgeable guide. The paintings date back to 1560/70 & are in the style of a Tudor knot garden with Biblical texts written above. The paintings lay undiscovered until 1989 so are a real find & a treat to see.Admission is free with donations welcomed. There are other exhibits to see in the upper room as well as small gifts & a guide book to purchase.Well worth a visit.
