Hellens is a wonderful old house, and the guided tours are very good. Because the house is complex historically and architecturally, some sort of printed map would help to make its interpretation easier. We were told that the cellars were constructed from the remains of an earlier house nearby. It would have been interesting to have had an opportunity to... More

Spent a very interesting two hours with Bradley, Hellens curator, who explained, with great accuracy and outstanding knowledge, the amazing history of Hellens. The remarkable people who've owned and/or lived there, and the extraordinary 'old master' paintings on the walls. Artifacts owned by many historical personalities ind Ann Boleyn are on show, too. Bradley brought the whole place to life,... More

This has magnificent gardens, on a small but enticing scale. The building is full of nooks and crannies, stories and ghosts, and it is an absolute must for visitors. Don't forget to visit the Physic Garden.

We were entertained by the tour leader's skilful commentary of the history of the building, the family, and their place in English history.

A delightful tour of the house that is still a home with plenty of history and a wonderful, intriguing garden. Open Sundays and Wednesdays.

Have just spent a glorious day at the 2016 Hellens Garden Festival. Weather was decidedly damp English June but this didn't spoil the day at all. The gardens are beautiful, with different areas linked by secret paths and hidden arbours. The planting is wonderful, and the roses stunning. I loved the kitchen and herb garden, but the Physic Garden was... More

A fascinating house with lots of original artefacts. It's a home, not a museum, which makes it even more unusual. Cat, our guide, was very knowledgable and was great at engaging with our small group. The tour lasted about an hour. You can finish the tour in the tearoom if you like. Watch the opening times. Check website before. £20... More

Set in the small village of Much Marcle is Hellens. A privately owned hall which allows you a different experience from the highly polished National Trust Houses. After viewing the house walk through the gardens and gateway and follow the footpath along the edge of about 3 fields till you come to a forest track keep on this following the... More
